-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday me, Alok and Sebastian went to the Nürburgring in my sister's 2007 BMW 118i. I was originally planning on taking it unto the ring, as a ticket only cost 19 Euro. But my sister was against the idea and I had to respect that. Plus, the weather turned totally sour not even halfway through the day. We left Bruchsal with a full fuel tank at 9:00 AM sharp and arrived in Nürburg shortly before 12:00 PM. Quick driving on the Autobahn had saved us a lot of time and we arrived in Bruchsal with a half tank. The little 118i loves to slurp the unleaded stuff at high speed.

As you near Nürburg, you know something is going on here. Exotic cars started appearing out of the blue. The first exotics I saw were old Alfa-Romeo 75 T-Sparks which seemed to be very popular with Dutch people. As we neared the Nürburgring, we saw many English car enthusiasts in their RHD cars from various countries. Yes, they came all the way from the UK to drive on the 'Ring. We're talking Caterham S7's, Nissan Skyline GTRs (R33 & R34s), Subaru Impreza WRX STIs, Porsche 993 and 996 Turbos and even a PORSCHE CARRERA GT!!! Sadly, we never saw the Carrera GT on the track though. Gorgeous car though. We also saw two Audi R8's - friggin hot. Everyone just began fetching their cameras to photograph these babies. I even managed to get a high quality interior shot from a private Dutch owner (hot girlfriend allowed me to take an interior shot, total babe!!!). We tried asking this Dutch Audi R8 guy for a ride around the 'Ring (we would pay for the tickets) but he said that he had promised a ton of people to give them lifts around the track. We nearly got a ride around the Nürburgring in a mid 1990s Subaru Impreza from the UK but in the end the guy never showed up.

I also saw the new 2007 BMW M3 make an appearance! It was a white car with Dutch licenseplate and it was fittingly behind an Audi RS4 prior to entering the racktrack. I snapped some pictures as you can see below, all the while thinking "Rivals in Battle"! Audi RS4 vs BMW M3 on the Nürburgring!!! Damn I wish I could have seen the action! I suppose the Audi had the advantage in this wet weather thanks to its AWD superiority.

The two Dodge Vipers were also an interesting site. I've never heard such a brutal engine sound before. It sounded as if you were pouring barrels of gasoline down the mouth of some thirsty son of a b*tch and he'd burp! I think these Vipers regularly stopped to pick up people and drive them on the Nürburgring. I didn't bother getting a ride since the line was pretty long.

Towards the end of the day, we decided to head to Brünnchen, an area of the Nürburgring that Alok said would provide excellent photographic opportunities. He wasn't kidding. The moment we arrived, there was a yellow Porsche 996 Turbo and Porsche 996 GT3 RS side-by-side just waiting for the hell to be photographed out of it! As we neared the track, we nearly suffered multiple heart attacks. First, we heard the screaming V10 of a Lamborghini Gallardo coming around the bend. Shortly after, a gorgeous Audi R8 and a Dodge Viper followed! And these guys were pushing their cars to the limit - in the friggin rain!!! Not all the cars on the track were exotics. There was a guy in a Fiat Scudo (FWD) delivery van taking a corner like a madman and keeping that crapbox under full control! We even saw a family dad take a corner aggressively in a FWD Nissan Primera station wagon and doing drifts - in the rain and under full control! Holy friggin ****! We also saw an old BMW 5-Series (E34) doing controlled drifts on an extreme wet section of track! DAMN!!! TALENT RIGHT THERE! Alok got some excellent shot of that baby in action! Oh yeah, on the way there, we had to drive on wet and extreme twisty country roads to get there. It was almost like a mini Nürburgring, but narrower. Well, all of a sudden a yellow Audi RS4 Avant with overdone flender flares appears behind me. This car was screaming impatience and was very intimidating. I mean, here we were in a BMW 118i and then this bad boy appears behind us. Yellow color, wide body, UK license plate and RHD steering and a very impatient look to it. I signaled the guy to overtake and I think Sebastian, who was sitting in the back of the 118i got a few pictures of this baby behind us. He overtook us like a madman and the engine sound was menacing! Then we lost him. I couldn't keep up with this Audi RS4 Avant in this wet weather and in the twistys. Had this been a dry day, I probably would have had an easier time coping in the bends, but it was raining like hell and it was wet - and this Audi driver knew how to drive or he had complete confidence in the AWD capability of his car. The roads were really narrow, tight, curvy and hilly. A real track environment. Damn!

After photographing what we could in the rain, Alok got the brilliant idea of eating at the restaurant of the parents of Sabine Schmitz, the infamous race driver lady who gained fame with the BMW M5 "Ring Taxi" and who has done about 20,000 laps in her lifetime on the Nürburgring. She basically knows the track by heart and it is said can drive on it blindfolded. The restaurant was called the "Pistenklause" and was located not far from the Nürburgring. The food was quite good, the prices were ok but the atmosphere was superb. There was hundreds of pictures of famous racedrivers who have all dined at this restaurant. A lot of the photos were signed by these guys. Even more impressive, there were parts from racing cars that were signed and displayed all over the restaurant. Even the walls and ceiling were signed by these guys! It was the heaven of any true auto enthusiast!

The drive home was pretty exciting. We talked about how cool the day was and enjoyed the sporty handling of the 118i on the country roads. Once on the Autobahn we hurried back home to Bruchsal. The first 50 or so kilometers were limited to a slow 130 km/h (we did 150 km/h, 20 above the limit) and I later got the 118i all the way up to 230 km/h (144 mph) with about 500 RPMs more to go on the tachometer (!) - Alok took a nice shot of that and he'll post it as soon as possible. Sadly, we couldn't max out the 118i because some total b*tch in a Chrysler Pacifica suddenly pulled out infront of us to overtake some slow poke in an Opel Corsa. I had to slam the brakes and correct the trajectory of the car as the road was fairly wet and the rear of the 118i felt like it was sliding out. I decelerated to about 150 km/h and kept flashing the ******* b*tch in the Pacifica to overtake the damn Opel. She was in no hurry and took her time overtaking the Opel while I flashed her from behind like crazy. Boy was I mad! But we had another problem - we were dangerously low on fuel. The board computer kept mentioning how our range was dropping from 70 km to 60 km and lower. We pulled over into the slow lane and cruised at an economical 110 km/h hoping for a nearby gas station. When we found one after about 12 km, we pulled in and I filled the car up. The 118i has a 50 liter fuel tank and I filled her up with 48 liters of premium. Holy ****! The fuel tank was down to a dangerous 2 liters!

Well the BMW 118i has pretty good high-speed handling. It is pretty strenuous to drive at high speed for longer periods because you need full concentration. The steering is so direct it transmits every bump and unevenness in the road to your hands. In my experience, Mercedes-Benzes are more relaxing to drive at higher speeds because their steering is slightly vaguer. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
