Hey all,

I was talking with some old time friends that I managed to see over Christmas and we began to reminice about our board game days. Back before girls would actually talk to us we were the original "geek squad". We would get together in this one guy's basement during summer break and play tactical board games. We started out with the usual, Risk then Axis and Allies but after a while those seemed like kids games. Then we graduated to the mother of all counter based tactical board games, "The Longest Day".

The game centered on the assault and breakout of the Normandy invasion. This goliath took hours to set up and if played from D-Day to the breakout took weeks to complete. There were over 1500 counters representing allied and axis units from infantry to aircraft to be placed on an hexagon grid map which was so large it had to be layed out on the floor. I remember we used sticks to move the counters just like the map room of the Supreme Allied Command (Yes, we were super-dorks!).

Here is a link so that you can fully appreicate all this: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/5651

Now that we are all married our wives would never tolerate losing so much floor space! I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good PC based tactical, stragtegy or even real time strategy game. I am kind of nostalgic for my Supreme Allied Commander days!

Also, has Oleg's Wartime Command or WWII RTS been killed completely? This game seemed to be exactly what I was looking for but I fear it is dead.

Thanks!

If you like the big warships (and whats not to like?), and if you like big monster games that take years to play. Then, I recommend Matrix Games' "War in the Pacific"

The detail is there for the serious grognard who is looking for a way to avoid his family duties for the next five years or so.

Probably one of the best to realism for a small scale combat game (battalion and smaller) is Battlefront's Combat Mission series. It involves a little of real time and turn based strategy of World War II for both Eastern and Western fronts. Tons of playback and offers custom made scenarios and campaigns by the CM community.

Lots of good RTS games....Empire Earth 2 is good, but these are all tactical. If you want a strategic game try Civilisation 4.

Rome: TW is fun. Age of Empires III online is fun too, tough though. The Age of Kings (AoE 2) is great as well. I'm sure the Starcraft community is still strong.

I think I'd recommend the Total War series. yeah. Real tactics, awesome graphics.

This has been discussed before:

What you're looking for is HEARTS OF IRON 2.

In case you insist on RTS, I'll have to suggest the only two good ones, Age of Kings and Starcraft. The rest have no theoretical strategy background, thus ridiculously easy. RTS is my favorite genre. I've written many articles about them in pc magazines and have played probably all. However, I can't recommend any that you would particularly like.

I`m more of a fan of WWII so I`d definitely recommend Blitzkrieg2 but the best all around RTS I ever played is EARTH2150 - it`s kinda old but great(Lost Souls being the latest). Its sequel - EARTH2160 - was released in October I think and it is very good although I aint got the right hardware to enjoy it fully.

My girlfriend bought me Rome for Christmas. Looking at the glaring errors for the LEGIONARII in those images casts much doubt in my eyes...

I have not played board wargames in many moons as I came to much prefer miniature based games.

Harpoon 3 (http://advancedgaming.biz/index.php?cevent=page.view&id=2)

Now open source, somewhat.
Heavely user supported
Updated frequently
Never the same game twice.
Same Ol Harpoon you remembered, but better.

If you fancy "old school" boardgame on a PC, maybe Anglo-German War "AGW" - western front 1939-45. Hex and turn based. Just came out - it seems to be having some teething issues and does not have the most friendly interface - but it has a strong fanbase and a dedicated (one man) designer, Ron Dockal.

Forums at The Wargamer have some background to...look under Schwerpunkt Games:

Not for everyone, I admit, but if you liked the Longest Day...

"Imperial Glory"-I wasnt even a Napoleonic era fan before I fell in love with the demo of this game.Bought full game next day!Yet to find a comparable quality WW2 game and tried many of them....Amazing blend of graphics(almost FPS level) and gameplay...Dont like any other Napoleonic era RTS games though eg Cossacks(2)

Rome: Total War is one of my favorite games. I highly recommend it.

It's very easy to overlook the historical inaccuracies when you're in the middle of a large battle ordering your cavalry to charge into the enemy's flank!
