Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Gosh. appears like yesterday seeing the first screenies in a computer mag over 6 years ago. The demo then and the infamous P-39 rain mission in it. The great joy finding the 190 in the first patch. And the whole game gearing up after that. The anticipation for Forgotten Battles. The endless discussions and speculations about Pacific Fighters. The neverending flamewar on these forums.

*sighs*

Part of my life.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Same here. I got the original for Xmas when it came out.

FB has been on the HD of every computer I have owned since.(I'm on my 5th) Its as essential as Windows.

Since then I have learned to use Paint Shop Pro, learned a lot more about WW2 aviation, become involved with various Fighter Group Associations, provided IL2FB based illustrations for a published book on the 368thFg and conversed via the net with numerous veteran pilots. Not to mentions made some friends around the planet. All thanks to Olegs creation.

The IL2 series is waaaay more than a flight sim, its a world unto itself.

Heres to the next incarnations over the coming years. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I remember reading about, following, and waiting impatiently for IL2's release. I rushed out to Electronics Boutique where I had a copy reserved and quickly installed it on my machine. I was amazed at how detailed and immersive it was. For the first time I felt like I was actually flying a combat aircraft. I have been in love with this series ever since and have never looked back although I have tried others it has only made me realize how great we really have it with Oleg and Il2!!!!!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

5 years ! How many hours spent playing, patching, chatting, waiting, designing...
Such an achievement, with this forum as archive room, I don't see any other game we could compare it with.
Soul too with the memory of WWII - GPW tragic events for so many people - 5 years too...
Thanks to everybody involved.
This might be a sim, but it's closer to life than just trying to copy a cold reality.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I remember playing RB3D with my squad in the summer of 2001. Everyone was talking about this new WW2 flight sim and anticipating its arrival. Shortly after its release we stopped flying RB3D due to continued lack of support and arguments over which flight model to use.

I was using a off the shelf Compaq system for a while until I bit the bullet on my first "custom" built PC. Several thousand dollars later on rebuilds and I am still as happy to play this game today as I was when I first installed the original.

What a great community and developement team.

Thanks Oleg and company......Well done!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have to admit that I too tinkered with my computer to get this title to run good. Of all the games/sims I own, this one walks away with with not only the best money ever spent award but also the most play time award too. DAMN, I'm gettin' old!

Congrats! Still got the original installed - in it's original retail version - and still fly it from time to time. An excellent way to really appreciate just how far this sim has come.

Amazing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

On a side note: before the original IL-2 was released I had very little idea on what the eastern front was, being the typical "historically ignorant American" and all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif But as it so happens with material that gets one truly interested in the subject being represented, the more I played IL-2, the more I read about the events of the period, and the more viewing material I purchased on the subject.

Before I knew it I had ammassed a fine collection of books and DVDs describing the political dynamics between the National Socialists and Communists, and the epic, epic fight between the two that ensued. That was truly the biggest fight of WWII.

An awful lot happened between the Russians and Germans during the war. An awful lot. While realizing that war, inevitibly, will always be an act that humanity takes part in, let's hope that nothing of that magnitude ever happens again.

Okay, I'm off my pedestal now...
