"Oh, but you already gave them a reason. Nine, to be exact."

even if they "said what they meant" it would still be a game full of quotes cuz anything they say is considered a quote, and there has to be dialogue to push the story http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

that's actually:
Malek: Your presence here deprives me of both.
the second one is: "Were it that the city was possessed of either."
third one: "Upon you as well, brother." (i'm not sure about this one though)
and forth one: "Your presence here will deliver us both."

But my favorite quote is the very first one, and very last from the animus.

And Al Mualm: "Sleep the Sleep of the dead. Of the womb, so you may be reborn, to a new clause."

Desdmond: "This is so... F*colourful*... Sorry, but it is..."

And best of all, Alshaya walaaq un-bekillhum mumkin - Altair.

Assassin's Creed quotes:

1. Altair: I am... alive. But I saw you stab me... felt death's embrace!

2. Altair : Nine lives in exchange for mine.
Al Mualim : A most generous offer, I think. Have you any questions?
Altair : Only where I need begin.

3. Altair: Is that all?
Despot: Yes, yes! I've told you everything I know.
Altair: Then it's time for you to rest. (He kills the man.)

4. Altaïr: I've done as asked and learned all I need to know about my prey.

5. Altair: His fires have been extinguished...as well as his life.

A lot of my favorites have already been posted, but one that hasn't is:

Tamir: Such pride. It will destroy you, child.

But I also like his "breast of war" line, and Garnier's "play with fire" line, and almost anything Malik says..

And I used to hate it when the beggar woman in Acre would sing "My family's sick and dying!" but that's kinda grown on me.

my favourite quote so far is when in the temple of solomon altair displays his arrogance: "you might learn something" and malik says "indeed, he'll teach you to disregard the creed"

well, my favorite was part of a talk after you kill the 7th person. i dont remember the whole thing, but here's most of it:

Al-Mualim: what is the truth?
Altair: we place faith in ourselves. we see the world for what it truly is, and hope that one day all mankind would see the same
Al-Mualim: what is the world?
Altair: the world is an illusion, one into which we can submit, as most do, or transcend.
Al-Mualim: and what is it to transcend?
Altair: to realize that nothing is true and everything is permitted. that laws arise not from divinity but through fate. i realize now that our creed demands us not to be free, but to be wise

oh, and to respond to drego5, the quote is translated as "Nothing that is real is forever, but everything is possible"

my best is this one:

Al Mualim: The means by which men rule are reflected in their people. As you cleanse the cities of corruption, you heal the hearts and minds of those who live within.
Altair: Our enemies would disagree.
Al Mualim: [Abruptly] What do you mean?
Altair: Each man I’ve slain has confessed strange words to me. They are without regret. Even in death, they seem confident of their success. Though they do not admit it directly, there is a tie that binds them. I’m sure of it.
Al Mualim: There is a difference, Altair, between what we’re told to be true, and what we see to be true. Most men do not bother to make the distinction; it is simpler that way. But as an Assassin, it is your nature to notice; to question.

and this one:
Al Mualim: I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind…for in much wisdom…is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge…increaseth sorrow.

(just because it made me lol http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif)

-I applied my heart to no wisdom, and to no madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing at the wind. For in much wisdom is much grief. And he that increased knowledge - increased sorrow.

-Al-Mualim: Tread carefully boy, I do not like your tone.
Altair: And I do not like your deception!!!!
Al-Mualim: I have given you a chance to restore your lost honor.
Altair: Not lost, taken!…by you!!! And then you’ve sent me to fetch it again like some damn DOG!!!

-Altair: Face me! Or are you Afraid?!?
*blah blah blah, skipping his Al-Mualim’s speech*
Al-Mualim: I am not afraid
Altair: (quietly) prove it.

-“Tell me, ‘master’, why did you not make me like the other Assassins? Why allow me to retain my mind?”

yes, I like a lot of quotes. XD

TO ANYONE:

"MY MASTER IS DEAD - AND MANY MORE WITH HIM, FRIEND AND FOE ALIKE. BUT THE STORM IS BROKEN, THOUGH PRIDE MAY HOLD THE CLOUDS ALOFT A LITTLE LONGER. OF THIS MUCH I AM CERTAIN: WITH ROBERT AND AL MUALIM DEAD, THE SARACEN AND CRUSADER ARMIES WILL LAY DOWN THEIR ARMS AND GIVE UP THIS SENSELESS WAR. FREED FROM THE MANIPULATIONS AND SCHEMES OF WICKED MEN, SALADIN AND RICHARD WILL FIND THEY HAVE MORE IN COMMON THAN THEY THINK. PEACE WILL WITH RETURN TO THE LAND. AND IF THEY SHOULD STRAY ONCE MORE? THEN MY BROTHERS AND I WILL DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO SET THINGS ARIGHT... MASYAF IS QUIET NOW, CARESSED BY THE WINDS WHICH CARRY THROUGH THE VALLEY. WHAT IS THIS THING I HOLD, THAT IT CAN BEND MEN'S MINDS? NO LARGER THAN AN APPLE - YET ITS POWER GReATER THAN ANY WEAPON I'VE KNOWN. I HAVE SEEN WHAT EVIL EVEN THE SMALLEST TASTE BRINGS. I SHOULD DESTROY IT... YET SOMETHING STAYS MY HAND. NO. I WILL HOLD IT A LITTLE WHILE LONGER AND SEE WHAT IT MAY YEACH ME. PERHAPS IT CAN BE TURNED TO GOOD? OR IS THIS WHAT THE OTHERS THOUGHT WHEN THEY HELD IT? IS THAT ITS POWER THEN? TO TURN THE NOBLE INTO CRUEL? I KNOW NOT WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR ANY OF US, BUT I DO KNOW THOSE ASSASSINS WHO REMAIN WILL NEED GUIDANCE.I MUST ATTEND TO THEM. HELP TO HEAL THEIR WOUNDS. WE WILL MARCH TOGETHER INTO THE FUTURE, AND EMERGE STRONGER THAN WE WERE BEFORE, IF WE ARE TO SUCCEED, IF WE ARE TO REBUILD, THEN WE MUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO REPEAT THE MISTAKES OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE. WE MUST BE VIGILANT, EVER MINDFUL OF THE PAST...

WE WILL BE HERE soon...

Hahaha! I created an account in the forum JUST to answer you and get a cookie.

The Answer: Everytime you click a memory block, a synopsys text will appear alongside a picture, explaining what that memory is all about. After finishing the game, if you go to the LAST memory block and read the synopsys, you'll see it has an Attachment ( like some informer missions' texts ). If you click >>VIEW ATTACHMENT you will get this text.

It's Altaïr's own hindsight analysis of the events. =D

yes you are right,

but my favorite set of dialog is between Altair and an informer, i dont remember exactly what is said but they talk about a female assassin that has some sort of connection to Altair.... maybe a girlfriend?

Ah, you speak of Adha? Yes, she is the "Chalice" in Altaïr's Chronicles. I'm not too sure how deep their relationship was but she disappeared in the end of the game and it would seem as though he hasn't seen her since, not even by year 1191.

Yeah I remember that conversation, he asked him if he had any news of her and then told him not to worry. I found it particularly interesting because I played the prequel first. =D

I hope the Adha mentioned in the game isn't the one in Altair Chronicles.
Just because she is the typical "damsel in distress."
Altair deserves better than that.

Well to be fairly honest I didn't notice anything romantic about their relationship in the Chronicles. It was like: "I saved you, so I kinda care for your safety" and she was basically: "Look, you rescued me and I appreciate it, so here's some information on that problem of yours".

Then he saves an entire city and arrives too late to help her, resulting in massive frustration. I don't think that's love. If it was, he would've probably done something completely cheesy like saving her first and then dealing with the siege. =P

I just created an account so I could write up this quote. I can't believe nobody has posted it :S
And now I can't even remember it properly.
Takes place between Altair, and Richard, after Robert has been assassinated.

Richard: ... We come into this world, kicking and screaming. Violent and unstable. It is who we are... we cannot help it.
Altair: No- We are what we choose.

Or something along those lines.
Thought it was an awesome quote.

There's several quotes...

Al Mualim: I abide my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I percieved that this was also a chasing at the wind. For in much wisdom, is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow.

Al Mualim: Before you go, I have a question for you.
Altair: What is it?
Al Mualim: What is the truth?
Altair: We place faith in ourselves. We see the world the way it truly is, and hope that one day all mankind will see as such.
Al Mualim: What is the world then?
Altair: An illusion. One which we can either submit to, as most do, or transcend.
Al Mualim: What is it to transcend?
Altair: To see that nothing is true and everything is permitted. That laws arise not from divinity, but reason. I understand now; our Creed does not command us to be free, it commands us to be wise.

Altair: La shai wak'ion motlaq bal kollon momken. (Arabic for "Nothing is impossible, anything is possible." Which is another way of saying "Nothing is true, everything is permitted.")

And all the target death-dialogue and conversations between Altair & Al Mualim which are too long to post.

And this one:
Malik: Altair! Wonderful to see you return to us! And how fares the mission?
Altair: Talal is dead.
Malik: Oh, I know, I know. In fact... the ENTIRE CITY KNOWS!!! Have you forgotten the meaning of subtlety!?

"What is it?"
"This treasure parted the Red Sea, made rivers run red...and let a carpenter's son turn water into wine."

"STOP RUNNING! YOU KNOW WE WILL CATCH YOU!"

"Rest, prepare, cry in the corner. Do whatever you do before a mission. Just make sure you do it quietly."

Off memory:
The assassination target that's burning books:
You trust your lives to drops of ink, but do you stop and ask who put them there and why? No you just take them as the truth.

As for the "Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted" line in Arabic. Well here's the thing, it's mistranslated. What Altair actually says is "la shay'a mutlaq, kulla shay' mumkin" which exactly means "nothing is absolute, everything is possible" (and he has a terrible accent too). If you want to say the english version correctly in Arabic it's "la shay'a sahih, kulla shay' masmooh". The apostrophe is hamza, which is a glottal stop. You can also swap "sahih" (correct) for "haqiqiy" (real), as if you want to keep the same number of words, there's no exact equivalent for "true" in the contextual meaning. For a more accurate translation: "la shay'a huwal haqiqa, kulla shay' masmooh" meaning "nothing is the truth, everything is permitted". A more elegant wording would be "la haqiqa, kulla shay' masmooh" meaning "There's no truth, everything is permitted."

The "sh" is the same as in English "shallow".
For clues to pronouncing the lone "h" correctly start your search here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E1%B8%A4%C4%81%CA%BE
Exception: the h is huwal is the same as in "hello". Actually it's not an exception, it's just that the Arabic alphabet has more consonants than the Latin alphabet so we use h for 2 arabic consonants.
The "q" is a "heavy" k sound.

Cheers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As for the meaning, as Al Mualim ("the teacher") says, it doesn't mean that everything is permitted, it means that your actions should not be hampered or hindered by codes of conduct or morality (because these aren't true, because they stem from divinity, not reason). The saying does not grant unlimited freedom, although it does free one from misleading beliefs. The saying requires the preceding wisdom. All it does is sum up this wisdom. It does not actually grant it.

Also, since I speak French and I usually put the game in French anyway, it doesn't make any difference to me. I think I still get some lines in other languages...

My favorite quote set is basically the entire assassination conversation with Sibrand, but only because for some reason, it came off as the gayest thing I've ever seen. Maybe it was the way Sibrand clung to Altair as Altair soothed him and told Sibrand that he'd be safe in the arms of his god or something. *cough* >>

Did Sibrand speak German? I always though his accent was more French than German. Germans aren't as harsh on their 'r's as Sibrand was, IIRC.

I also liked it whenever people yelled at me for climbing on the walls too. Because it gave me excuses to call their moms fat.

I normally speak to Malik before assassinating a target and after the proper conversation, after collecting the feather he says something along the lines of, "I'm sure [target name] is not hiding in my bureau"

I found it hilarious.

Al Mualim: What is the Truth?
Altair: We place faith in ourselves; we see the world the way it really is, and hope that, one day, all mankind might see the same.
Al Mualim: What is the world, then?
Altair: An illusion. One which we can either submit to; as most do, or transcend.
Al Mualim: What is it to transcend?
Altair: To recognize nothing is true, and everything is permitted. That laws arise, not from divinity, but reason. I understand now that our creed does not command us to be free; it commands us to be wise.
Al Mualim: Do you see now why the Templar’s are a threat?
Altair: [Understandingly] Where as we would dispel the illusion; they would use it to rule.
Al Mualim: Yes. To reshape the world in an image more pleasing to them. That is why I sent you to steal there treasure. That is why I keep it locked away. And that is why you kill them. So long as even one survives, so to does there desire to create a new world order.

*snip*

Desmond: Man, put yourself in my shoes! I'm being held hostage by a group of scientists -- At least, I think you're scientists -- and forced to spend all day in some crazy arse machine. You won't tell me what you're looking for or why you want it, but I'm supposed to be thanking you for keeping me alive.

"Nothing is true. Everything is permitted."--
Alot of people.

"Harden your heart, child; for he who increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow."--Paraphraised from Al Mualim.

"My way is better."-- Altair. I use that one all the time

"Why have you done this?"-- Talal. Use this alot to.

"What the *profanity*"-- Desmond

"Victory Lies In Preparation."-- Achievement Unlocked. Words to live by.

That thing Malik said, all of them.

Those conversations Altiar had with his interogatees before killing them.

"I make'a dis sacrafice for the greater good. Requiescat in pace."-- Ezio.

"She needed help uh, with some things. I'm mostly innocent."-- Ezio.

"Victoria agli assassini."-- Lots of peolpe.

Everything Shaun says and writes.

Altaïr: "I understand."

Anything said from Subject 16.
"What is a man, but the sum of his memories? We are the stories we lived, the tales we tell ourselves. We are nothing."
"Everybody regrets something. What do you regret?"
Desmond: "I wish I stayed with my parents, that I was more patient. I wish things went differently with Lucy..."
16: "Thank you."
Desmond: "For what?"
16: "For making sense."
He trusted Lucy to get him out. He didn't know what was going to happen, but he had faith William would somehow get him out. He didn't. He knows alot of information the Assassins need, but he didn't matter to William. In my opinion, he's the best character in the series. Or at least the most interesting.

It made me laugh every time.
