View Full Version : Interested in a WW1 Server?

Hello.

Anticipating the upcoming Knights of the Sky release toward the end of the year (if it makes it and is on time), I've been wanting some WW1 action now. RB3d will not run on my machine and while I've enjoyed OFF, I have some challenges with it that fall beyond the scope of this thread. Thus, I'm turning toward FB.

Would anyone be interested in flying in an "All WW1 Server"? I.e., nothing but biplanes (CR-42, J8A, I-153), the TB-3 and P-11. A requirement would be all participants must use WW1 skins that I make available for download.

These planes are a blast to fly, and all makes and models would be available to each side--for instance, you could fly a CR-42 for the Germans skinned as a Pfalz DIII, or fly it as a Martinsyde Elephant for the RFC. TB-3s can be skinned as Gothas or Handley Page 0/400s, and P-11s as either Fokker EIIIs, DVIIIs, or Morane Saulniers, etc.

Before I set up the server, construct the site, make more skins (I have a huge amount already but need to make generic skins for each plane type--i.e., I have Sopwith Pup skins for the J8A and I-153 but need one for the CR-42, etc.) and get it all up and running, I want to make sure there are others who will participate--this is all about giving us WW-1 fans a venue in which to fly, even though we'll have to suspend a bit of realism. If nobody is interested there is no point in doing this, and knowing this will prevent a huge time waste.

So, please, if interested, go ahead and let me know! Even if disinterested, please feel free to post constructively. In either case include suggestions, etc, if you have any.

If it turns out a preponderance of you are disinterested, I'll just go back to my offline WW1 campaigns and wait as patiently as possible for KOTS. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank you for your time.

I would love to see such a server set up - I have a number of WWI missions built in exactly the way you describe. Ballon busting, "artillery spotting", etc. Loads of funhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Can the 153, retractable gear, guns of terror....In many ways it so outclasses the others.

Sounds like it would be fun. I have to agree with Billfish about the 153, though.

I find using the M62 tends to even it out a bit. The P is silly though.

The 153 can also be flown wheels down without detriment - i.e. it flys, just that bit slower, different skill required - but you can't actually force that in-game. Besides, i come & blow it away with my CR-42 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Love it...page me, i'm always happy to host one of my "WW1" coops in HL

Absolutely....they are great fun and I would recommend them to anybody, nothing like trying to out stall an enemy!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The big reason I'm looking forward to a WW-1 sim is because with no radios, there would be no comms. With my slow dial up connection, I cannot use voice comms, so they are an unfair advantage to my opponents.

So, did these aircraft have radios?

The Gladiator did IIRC, but the Fiat and Chaika didn't.

I'm all for a WW1 server, every so often theres a single map on a server but nothing like this. So go for it mate! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Or fly them as 1930s combat aircraft.

You would enjoy this alot more if you fly and fight the 1930s while waiting for The Gennadich simm.

1930s ... I think we just discovered something more Rare than World War 1 sims.

Fantastic reception so far--excellent!

I agree, the I-153P is a bit much but the M is doable--they can represent the Nieuports and Sopwith Camels. Sure, they're zippy, but they can be had. Even with their gear retracted.

On comms: would you be interested in a "no-comm" server, or would that be too much and make flying the server less fun than if it had comms? Feedback appreciated.

Yes, a 1930s sim would be rare! I'm still shooting for WW1, though--half the fun would be seeing all those classic skins flying around. Also, players could use their own skins and not just skins I provide for download. Long as they are WW1-themed, they would be welcome.

Speaking of that, if you have any favorite Squadrons, Staffeln, pilots or aces you'd like to see skinned, please don't hesitate to make a request. BTW, below is WiP screen of a CR-42 skinned as a Jasta 10 Pfalz DIII. I just have to make some minor adjustments on her and then fire her over to Flying Legends for now.

Eventually, if the feedback continues to be positive, I'll start the wheels in motion.

Thank you for your time!

Sounds good.

Would get my vote.

Unfortunately it's difficult to include I53 - Cannon version is a no no - even the machine gun version will outclass anything else - it's not the retractable wheels that do it it's the gullwing. Forward visibility infinitely better than fiat or J8.

I suppose you can dress a P11 up as a D1? again - gull wing - but top vis in a D1 was good.

Well it might stop us getting bored while waiting for knights of the sky.

As long as we get loads of colourful skins can all fly Fiats if neccesary.

If you get those skins posted I'll run up some dog and co-op missions on the GIAP Dogserver.

Agree on I-153, it's far superior to any other biplane in the game, regardless of the version. Faster, tougher, better armed, just as manuverable in horizontal and far better in vertical. No competition.

p-11.cAce have you uploaded these anywhere. If not can you? If not, if I send you a PM with an email address would you be willing to pass them on?

Brilliant idea!! I'm sure there would be players for one server with good maps.

I would vote for leaving Chaika away, or at least placing it far from the front line.

well, IL2compare says that the Cr.42 is faster than the I-153 M-62.

and its .50cal are also lethal ("fortunatly" they are not programmed like the other 12.7mm SAFAT in game, seems MAddox forgott this little fighter http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ).

unfortunatly the comming Ki-27 is way of in performance ............... for this "WW1" fake i mean http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

one of my favorite planeset so far is Axis vs Soviet , 1941:
Rumanian Hurricane Mk.I, IAR80,P.11c, He111H-2
Hungarian Cr.42
vs
Soviet MiG-3, I-16Typ18, I-153 M-62, TB-3

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

and im looking forward to the Nomonhan map:
Ki-27 vs I-16Typ18 & I-153 M-62 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've flown a couple of missions like this before (albeit not on a dedicated WWI server) and they're great fun if the maps and missions account for the slow airspeed and limited loadouts.

I'd also say leave out the I-153. However, under certain circumstance I WOULD be o.k. with the inclusion of the G50 although it does get away from the WWI theme.

I'd fly there a bit.

I love the idea! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

As far as "favorite squadrons" skins, I like the No. 10 Naval Squadron Camels (with the red/black/blue and white striped noses) and Jasta 5. Any of the JG I/II/III staffeln, too. Okay, all of them! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great replies, thanks!

Seems the majority dislikes the I-153. Duly noted.

What about:

Comms/no comms?
Preferred maps?
WW1 skins you like? (JFTM, your favorites are already skinned in abundance! Just need to catch up on versions for the CR-42, which is in full swing now.)

This might be enough to get an off linner like me to play on line! I have to agree with the rest, the I-153 might be a bit uber compared to most of the other bi-planes.

This makes more sense. Those planes were many ways far beyond WWI. Stall in WWI wings was
so much quicker and worse for example. Changes in wing design of late 20's to 1930 were
huge over most every WWI plane and very good improvement over the advanced thick wings of
Fokker DrI and Fokker DVII.

What a shame Grumman had to be dicks about 'rights'. There was a nice pre-WWII Grumman
biplane I'd liked to have seen. Also a Henshel biplane used in the Spanish Civil War.

Thank you, everybody! There's been enough of a favorable response that I've started getting this together. Watch this board for details.

In the meantime, feel free to post suggestions, etc. Or, email them to ww1_jagdflieger@yahoo.com

BTW, this will be a WW1 server. 1930s has a certain attraction, but where else can we fly a bombed-up "Martinsyde G.100 Elephant"?
