Does anyone know the way to land the f4u1d on the flight deck? what is the correct airspeed &etc. for landing this aircraft. I would appreciate any input in this are many thanx. jhg

You know what's funny? I regularly land this plane on a carrier and I've never paid attention to airspeed. My final approach usually starts at around 180kph and I just make sure I have enough power so my nose doesn't dip. I watch nothing but the carrier and feel what my plane is doing. I finally settled for landing Corsairs by coming in for final from the side. Being in a constant, slow turn allows me to keep the deck in view the longest. I try to keep the speed around 170kph or so but, like, Longjocks, I mostly try to fly as slow as possible while retaining control of the airplane.

Find the speed at which it wants to start dipping the right wing and then fly slightly above that speed on approach from thence forward. You'll learn to recognize the pre-stall buffeting sounds too. So you don't need FFB stick to fly at the edge of stalls, as some claim.

Try about 100mph (mph is what the airspeed indicator in the game is in) or 87 knots. Go over to Simouthouse, PF/Il2 board and I have a good little dissertation on this with a couple of pictures. probably on the 2nd page by now.

Speed will vary with fuel load, try 25% for practice.

To be honest, I never look to see. I do it all by feel.

90 - 100mph (150 - 160km/h) for me, and use power to adjust glide slope. If you're descending too quickly don't reef on the stick, just add about 5% power and wait a bit. Same for too high, pull some power off and wait a bit.

If you're descending too slowly even at zero power, you started your approach way too high. Go around and try again.

I usually land the Corsair by the way it feels and handles. There comes a moment when you can almost tell your about to lose it. Thats when you better be over the deck. Its all a matter of timing and feel mixed with a little reading of the gauges. hehe

One comment about the (real) F4U on approach, you may be able to make an approach at lower than 82 knots, but power application (ie. waveoff) below that speed WILL roll you upsidedown. The game mimics this fairly well.

The 'Speedbar' is not accurate enough presently for accurate approach speeds. Use the cockpit guage!

I come in high and slow, maintaining around 90 knots. Combat flaps on initial approach, switching to landing flaps on final. Keep the bottom of the gunsight slightly above the bow of the ship. By the time you're over the deck at the ship's stern, you should be at an altitude of 50-100 feet...no more! Pull back on the stick HARD as if trying to stall the aircraft, and snag that wire!

Yeah I must say I've done the landings by feel, just focused on starting slow (around 180km/h as mentioned) and keeping my nose up with a slow descent to the deck, using power to control my descent rate. I'm usually too focused on the deck to look at my instruments to see my speed at around touchdown http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
