To my knowledge the Spitfire Mk IX had the Rounded tail as opposed to the pointed one, This is because the Mk IX was essentailly a Mk V airframe with a better Merlin, as it was a stopgap aircraft. The Mk VIII (Which was put into production after the IX) and all versions thereafter had the pointed tail.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Repeat after me please:

Spitfires Mk.IX of later series had the pointed tail...

The majority of Spifire Mk. VIII, IX, and XVIs were fitted with the "pointed" rudder for the purpose of increasing control area.

The IX was initially delivered with the rounded rudder and B-type wing. But as the marque developed, the wing was changed to that of the E-Type, while the fin and rudder evolved into the more pointed shape. Beginning with the Mk VII, the plane was also two feet longer (from 29 ft to 31 ft). You can see this if you attempt to put a Mk V skin on a Mk IX in FB/AEP.

And a new generation of Merlins went into the IX(61, 63, 63A, 66, 70). Eventually it added about 250 hp to the engine (over the Mk V).

IMO, the FM for the IX shows a reasonable effort to make its performance consistent with these changes.

Ah, I stand corrected.

Sorry Superaereo for not remembering every presise detail about all 22 marks of spitfire that I have read about for more than half my life. I guess some of us just aren't that bright.

As for the searching the forum thing. Posting a new one does little more than push some posts down for a day. thats if they aren't being read or replied to anyway of course.

repeat after me...

NP Farkitt, it's just that it's a Monday and I was in a "oh no, not that question again..!" mood.

Glad you didn't take offence.
