View Full Version : RBJ Probably thinks Stereo sound causes lag - a challenge :)

Come on RBJ, tell me about the pitfalls of Stereo sound, and hey, while you're at it, Surround sound too! I just know there's some issue with subwoofer reverberation that results in packet loss, and I'm sure you've already got the test results itemized in your bag of goodies...

And I'm sure we could all benefit from knowing why Beta is better than VHS or DVD, why cassettes are better than CDs, and why you prefer a.m. radio over f.m.

I'd like an in depth report on the frequency range of the various mediums, the distortion ratios, and the longevity of the physical media, tied into some packet-loss related theory.

Be sure to include:
a) "I am an ace",
b) "I have a 100,000 mbps T1"
c) "I respect the purity of the medium"
d) "Anyone who disagrees is a cheater"
e) "You need a Cray Supercomputer to connect 3 monitors"
f) "How do you connect 3 monitors"
g) A new and profound quote we can jot down for future reference /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Also, inquiring minds want to know why a.m. is more robust, and most of all, we're dying to hear the detailed technical explainations on why stereo sound results in lag for both on or offline players...

You will be graded on creativity, accuracy, grasping at straws, and overall grammar and readability.

Come on buddy, you can do it! Round up the stories! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

<img src=http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/2974/SUPP/soundstorm.jpg>
(I leave the 7th rear speaker in the box) and play all games with wonderfull 3D 5.1 positioned audio. I have 5 satellites and a subwoofer arranged in my O'sullivan satin cherry L shaped cockpit
<img src=http://www.id-furniture.com/marketing/images/specsheets/10342.jpg>
with a black Axis Mesh Leather Executive Chair

and a 21" Sony G520P
<img src=http://www.sonystyle.com/intershoproot/eCS/Store/en/imagesProducts/250x250/GDMF520.jpg>
Due to the nature of my made for gaming (developed by Nvidia) sound hardware that performs the best in games according to Tom's Hardware (and not a junky Creative card) I do not incur any significant performance loss in games due to 5.1 positional sound. Games like IL2/FB or Ghost recon do not even tap into the complete power of my sound hardware. I can support 64 3D voices, but FB only does 32! Also I don't get the sound bugs that people with creative card have. For additial sound enhancements, I emply a phase shift (via the Nvisia sound hardware control panel) in my rear satellites whose sound combines with the front satellites and it produces a rich, full, vibrant tone.

Wait a minute dex. Beta is much better than VHS. Beta actually gives better audio and video quality than VHS. Betamax and Digtal Beta are widely used in the professional video and broadcast fields. VHS did win though, thats marketing though/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

That crappy creative speaker system is for complete newbies to the world of sound.

It's a class D amplifier with a THD of 1.3! what a pile /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Plus for a real subwoofer (and true front channel and centers) you need audiophile grade hardware. A 12" shiva in a 5th order bandpass enclosure tuned to 20hz will get you down to 8hz (below human hearing) with a krekel 300 watt platte amp (class a/b .4 thd 300watt active subwoofer amp). With full frequency front channels and a audiophile center channel like this one http://www.acoustic-visions.com/LCC.htm.

Pick up a pair of rts-3s for rear sourrounds and 2 NAD 2400 thx amps and a NAD 904 dsp and you are rolling with a system that will make your exterior walls buckle /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif and the clarity will blow you away.

WIth my mid range system the sound is about 5 times better than my brother's klipsh 5.1 setup.

Your link didn't work.

I would rather just spend the $350 on my THX6.1's and worry about my home theatre (yes, I'm rich enough to have a TV/Stereo AND a computer) seperately.

My speakers are the best computer speakers you can buy. There is no freaky deaky bunch of assembled boxes with no true remote and iffy connection schemes like you have. Mine are 1 box (sub/amp) and 6 satellites that are color coded and have a very sweet remote with master, center, rear, sub, and treble, power and mute. They connect easily to the computer via the color coded 3 analog wire assembly. I will admit that the satellites could be quieter and higher quality. (they were quieter and heavier in my older cambridge soundworks). I was a bit dissapointed in that, but I can hardly tell if they are on or off (never notice them) when the computer is on. (and the computer only has 2 fans and is under my desk) When I heard these speakers going off in phase shifted 4.1 stereo for the first time, it was sweet. I can manually adjust the crossovers and all kinds of cool stuff via my Nvidia control panel.

I have also owned the LogitechZ680's but I returned them. (speakers too hissy, remote and it's functions not precise/implemeted smoothly) I am the best consumer out there when it comes to buying computer stuff. If I buy something, it's because it's the best decision a medium to high end consumer can make. And when I bought these, they were COMPUTER speakers not some modded out quasi home theatre "rig" (for lack of a better word).

Sorry RBJ, gotta disagree with ya on the "quasi home theater rig". Buying cute packaged computer sound systems is like buying a dell or a gateway. It comes together in a nice pretty box, very user friendly and even an idiot can set the up right, but like a custom build computer will get you the most performance, so will a custom speaker setup. You shouldnt be able to "hardly tell" if your speakers are on, you should have to see the light, hiss wont be present on a properly setup setup. Nvidias audio is great as computer audio setups go, but to make your Soundstorm really shine you should have it outputed via the SPDIF connector as dolby digital(you do know that soundstorm will encode anything to this) and let a seperate dolby digital decoder handle it and output it to real speakers. Inside a computer is a very electronically noisy place, and DACs dont do that great in there compared to what they can do on the outside. Now that its outputting dolby digital, it is just another audio source for a good home theater system, not a quasi one. even a low end home theater system is usually acoustically better than PC speakers.

The thing is I don't need to buy a dolby digital decoder when my computer already does it. And creative stopped doing SPDIF inputs on their speakers because future high resolution media will not allow the output of SPDIF. They only allow for analog output. See all the analog outputs of a Sony SACD player in the back? That's because you aren't allowed to output dolby digital stream (for copyright purposes)

No, the computer and the home theatre are different, and shall always remain so. The way my computer is set up, I can watch the TV about 7 yards behind it (and off to the side a little) THAT is where my home stero resides not my computer. THX650's are plenty for a computer. When you start getting into buying decoders and amps and seperate components, I would much rather put that money into my home theatre than a computer. And your decoder, might not be able to support my rear satellite (6th satellite) with it's decoding technology. No, the decoding will be done by my soundstorm or the next generation audigy3 (Depending if i upgrade my XP1900+ to Athalon64 or Prescott)

Also if you are outputting 5.1 SPDIF there is a slight performance hit... (I turn it off in my BIOS because I don't use it...I use analog outputs)

And welcome back to round number 422 of the "rest of the World vs RBJ" championship.

Tonight, we are coming to you from the sun-drenched UBISoft forum for IL-2: Forgotten Battles. Here are your contestants:

In the World corner, being accompanied by Messerschmitt-spokesperson Loco-S, is tonight's challenger, 3000+-time poster, Dexxxxxxx-meister! <World goes nuts>

And, in the red corner, wearing the Red Jacket, carrying the patented combined trim slider and eye-brow tweezer, the one, the only <to which someone yells 'Thank god for that') RayBanJockey. <Large section of crowd boos and hisses - and some throws a network terminator at him>

Your specialist topic for tonight is audio equipment, and how it may affect online transfer rates.

And you time starts....NOW!!

FFS guys let's give it a rest. Oleg is somewhere and should be about to tell us UBI has the patch and apoligises for the Friday Update being cancelled due to extreme busy-ness. As someone's pic above had, why feed RBJ? It only encourages him. Leave him to play with his own subwoofer.

Oh, and don't even tell me about sound systems until you have you subwoofer spliced and a second output powering your FORCE FEEDBACK CHAIR.

XyZspineZyX

But by not using a spdif output you are wasting Nforces ability to encode anything into 5.1. I know your nforce has a dolby decoding, but inside a computer there is tons of interference that doesnt help decoding out, decoding is much better done in a separate sheilded box. And about them stopping putting spdif outputs, who cares if they stop it in the future, is it the future yet? As long as your hardware can do it now, it will always be able to, so why would you care if some sony cd player cant do it, we arent talking about cd players. The dvd player I bought a month ago can still do it.

Just for your information RBJ, I have soundstorm as well since it is the best audio solution on the market (mainstream), but Soundstorm does not DECODE dolbydigital 5.1, rather it ENCODES IT!

That's why you need a separate D5.1 decoder to hear true DD5.1 through the SP/DIF. The Soundstorm does however do its own version of 5.1 decoding but it doesn't use the DD5.1 spec and goes through the analog outputs.

UT2K3 supports DD5.1 in game, but unfortunately FB doesn't. Little matter though since SoundStorm can do it on the fly anyway. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You don't know what high end is.

When I watch DVDs I just turn off the computer and run my 32" plamsma tv mounted on the wall above my monitor and sit back in my dedicated audiophile grade listeing/computer room on my nice leather lazy boy. I run a NAD T742 THX 7.1 reciever for decoding and both the rears and the mids, and run the ananlog outs to the 2400thx and 904 for front center and front mains.

ANd my Kimber speaker cable is worth more than your whole system (internconnects not included).

My home theatre is my home theatre.

I don't need to blow exorbitant ammounts of cash to try to make one like the other.

Have fun spending a grand on a new decoder for the next dolby digital format. Meanwhile, I will just be upgrading my soundcard/onboard sound (and loving it)

My computers sounds real good. There is a case making noise you know. You are probably one of those guys who needs good sound in his car too, even though the backround noise from the car makes it a pointless endeavor.

My room is accoustically treated and bare except for a large couch and my lisiting chair (the desk with the computer is recessed into the wall so as not to interfere with the soundstage). So it IS a better home theatre room than yours and just image playing your games on a true 7.1 home theatre rig (high end nonetheless).

It's my room and I share it with nobody else unless we have a DVD party and then it becomes better than most theatres.

Obviously you've never had a high-end car audio system. The enclosed area makes for a fantastic soundspace. I had a two seater Honda that cranked to over 130 decibals at a sound-off competition (me outside the car using a remote control). It could make your vision blur and sounded AWESOME at highway speeds with the windows and sunroof open.

The car system consisted of Alpine in-dash deck, 6-disc shuttle, Altec lansing component speakers in the doors, two rear self-made speakers for 2-way midranges, 2 12" subwoofers, a 3-way crossover, 3 amplifiers and a crazy rear-defroster. I built the speaker boxes, wired all the sound, bridged my subwoofers after lots of research, and it was FANTASTIC. It was a hobby, not just a need to drive around and make noise.

Now, I've stuck with home equipment because it's less subject to theft than a car and hey, I don't spend as much time in my car as I used to.

But pointless endeavour for car audio? Get your head out of the sand... if you can.

And if you use the right sized subs, direct them (and the air ports) backwards, and measure the sine wave of the subwoofer you can precisely reflect and direct the optimal sound to land at the passenger's bodies rather than out on the hood of the car like an amateur would do. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I like loud music myself but not at the expense of everyone else but then again I'm not looking for attention.

That said, I totally understand the passion car audio freaks have since I'm a reformed one. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Actually, when at high speeds, the back end of cars has a tendency to lift up, thus reducing rear-end traction. It allows the car to feel like its floating but that's not a good thing. I've witnessed it at 160 kms/h and definitely more at higher speeds. Ever seen a Porsche 911 Turbo with the huge whale tail? Yes, it's actually got a purpose.

What a know it all thread.

I know more than all of you combined.

And Dex, he was talking about a tail on a CRX, not a Porshe. And last time I checked a 190mph Ferari 360 Modena has no whale tail.

So once again, those of you who overspend on your computers sound system, put expensive stereos in your car, and affix whale tails to your CRX are just wasting your time. A cry for help is more like it.

I only listen to FM if there is nothing on AM.

It all depends on how light the backend of the car is, now doesn't it. A CRX at 190 kms/hr (no, not miles) will raise it's rear end, and so a tail may actually be safer.

Mind you, I'd only bother with a tail if I were going to race it on a track, which I always thought would be great.

RBJ, if you know more than all of us combined, you're either headed for a Nobel Prize any time now, or just a conceited ****.

Talk about a double-take. I started reading this thread, then had to check I wasn't on the car stereo forum by mistake.

WTF has this got to do with IL2 or even stereo lag? I would say start a thread about car stereos but as that's WAY off topic there's no point.

I know we're all hurting because there's no patch yet, but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer.

I just hope they stop extending the tunnel..../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If we all get on and get our chores/other life's work up to date or ahead of date then we can all take some time off to enjoy Oleg & Co's patch without hassles. That must be more important than this lockerroom-esk style of comparing tail and stereo sizes.

Mods, please, it's time the rubber ducky came and euthenased this thread. This forum's efforts could be put to better use than this surely?

- The F40 and F50 Ferraris have tails. How do you explain that?

For the sake of correct and impartial information, the ENZO has no tail (since Modena Ferrari emphasises undercariage aerodynamics (ground effect) rather than tails).

Respect to RBJ for all the information (and the polite tone, too)!

Still, after 2 pages of communication, four points from my side:

1. Nobody jumped on the Beta vs VHS wagon (except for one).
Young generations! I suppose nobody has seen a Beta system outside the technical museum...
No offence RBJ, you could be writting pages on the technical supperiority of Beta over the VHS system...

2. Why are you guys using monitors !?
RBJ (again) I was expecting AT LEAST from you to have switched to headmounted displays.
I have been trying to find the web page of the military headsets (which are really great) but for the time being check the
http://www.i-glassesstore.com/fligsimbun4.html

3. A normal desk for your simulators ?
I am getting disapointed here... This happens to people who save their money for their Recaro sports seats (joking)!

Check this out
http://www.phaser-dbs.de/pe_sim_cur.htm

RBJ you do not want me to believe that you do NOT have the WW2 equivalent ?

4. Nice that everybody is boasting about his home theater type sound etc etc...
Is the Soundfusion card the one to have for IL2FB ? With the least CPU overhead ? Or would somebody recommend another ?
And please guys, do not recommend me a EUR 1,000 card...

5. (unplanned) RBJ TKS for the tips you gave me on the prop pitch, it did make the difference!

Best regards everybody,
