i have a few 109s, and because thats the only type of 1:18 scale EVER available at WAL-MART ...i think its pronounced "VOL-MOT" , anways, i have decided to order online from forum favorite "BAD CAT AVIATION" here.

http://www.badcataviation.com/

in dealing with 1:18 scale aircraft you have TWO main companies to go thru. not that these are the ONLY 2,mind you, but they are the most widely recognised for WWII (propped, not JET) NON FLYING scale aircraft in this size.

BBI (BLUE BOX)

21st Centurty Toys

all of the 109s i have are of 21st century design. i like the quality and sturdyness of these aircraft, but i wanted to shop the competition, and see what was available.

to help balance out my 109 small collection i purchased 2 P-51's- "petie second", and "hurry home honey".

since i did not order two ofthe same aircraft but from each company i cannot do i complete direct review back to back. but i do have 2 corsairs comming in from both manufactures, for this.

(of quick note) -- not knowing HISTORICAL accuracy, ability, function / design , BBI "X-TREME DETAIL" is USUALLY the better way to go. and 21st century seems to be "large detailed aircraft ...for children". not that quality isnt there. but the finer points in detail, to me, are lacking.

both companies aircraft all have the same features.
.working landing gear
.working control surfaces, and leading edge slats
.colored, but clear plastic for NAV LIGHTS http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (mod friendly)..not solid painted plastic.
.spinning props
.pilot (BBI is HIGHLY manueverable in several axis )
.armaments/fuel externals
.large parts that assemble easily.
. if they fall, most parts will POP-OUT, compared to breaking http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i found out, and am quite happy about this)
.all radiators open close

ok first up. the boxes in general from BBI.

i am being a bit picky... but for two different aircraft, i did not like getting the same pilot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. i will note that the pilot has interchangeable helmet and uniform cap. i also did not like that the oxy mask was NOT positionable. (this is attached to the pilots helmet, and hangs down, from side clip) but some modifying of product will allow you to use the mask on face. seen below first photo.

i was pretty impressed with the cockpit detail. on teh 21st century toys, its "good enough" on teh BBI its EXCELLENT! from the weatherering, downt to the gauges, BBI really crams in the most amount for the price.

DECAL/DETAIL is very good! EVERY decal NO MATTER the print, is so clear...you can read it, if you cant because it is so small, you can read it in the magnyfying glass. EVERYTHING is legible if marked, and NOT a few "dots-n-dashes" to
represent text.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/GAU-8/100_2963.jpg

for those that are interested in ADDING battery operated motors... YOU CAN! plenty of room to work with a simple motor to add some effect. as you can see here, its quite spacious internaly. (does NOT mean you can use an R/C engine, i have no info on such..)

cockpit/figure look. will add detail cockpit soon (forgot)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/GAU-8/100_2976.jpg

side COMPLAINT- i have NOT dont the research yet. HISTORICALLY i do not know if the P-51 can have ONLY drop tanks OR bombs placed under wings at a time if not BOTH. but HERE you can see that they do not have room on the wings for both bombs and tanks (even though EACH wing has 3 "slots" for weapons to fit into.....and what is the extra slot for in each wing ..? you only get 2 tanks and two bombs..what is the third slot for?.. maybe im cramming too many items for something that the designers knew did not happen historically. or its just a mistake they made. dunno.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/GAU-8/100_3170.jpg

more cockpit detail- the hood fully slides back and forth. there is a tab on each side that provides contact with the inside of cockpit. this prevents the hood from falling of. but i do wish there was some kind of interferance fit, so that the hood remains CLOSED when you slide it to clsoed position...as can tell by the gap here, and will have to have a little patience if hanging the aircraft in OTHER than a horizontal flight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/GAU-8/100_3130.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/GAU-8/100_3125.jpg

PAINT is on the BBI aircraft goes into much higher detail, but does have what seems to be a MORE mishaps... but that also to a point makes the aircraft look slightly more realisitic.
21st century aircraft paint looks "BAKED" on, and BBI's paint looks "SPRAYED". but i can say for the most part, both paints resist any kind of smudging/flaking/peeling.

thats it for now. there is MORE, but i need some sleep. a few random pics for the day http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It looks like 21st Century Toys has came a long way since they first started their 1/18 scale stuff. I have one of their 109E's that I got for Christmas 2 years ago. Although it was cool, I didn't find the detailing on all that great. I also rememebr the pilot being way too small. It looks like things have greatly improved!

three underwing hardpoints on late model P-51 are for rocket mounts - otherwise you have droptanks OR bombs - one under each wing only.

Never a bomb and a tank under each wing.

I first saw these at an airshow and was blown away by some of the detail they had for the low price of these products.

I've also seen them at K-B toy store.

heywood,

thx for the info. i figured historically, like you had said, it was bombs, or fuel tanks, but NOT both. (all pictures on websites with these 1:18 scale tend to follow one or the other)

since none of the P-51's come with rockets, i am curious as to why there is a three slot setup under each wing for hardpoints. MAYBE there was a rocket version at one point? .. ill have to find out.

(for the curious) the mech model---

correction....

i have "hurry home honey", and "CRIPES A MIGHTY". BOTH P-51's are BBI .. i accidentally said i have Peties second"... which is a 21st century design.

i should also note: BBI A/C are known as "ELITE FORCE" on the box

21st centruy A/C are going under the "X-TREME DETAIL" moniker..

YOu people south of the border are just lucky. Up here the only people carrying the large stuff are the hobbyshops and they gouge for ever nickle they can get. I have 3 of the large ones, an F4U I picked up at Toys r Us (havent seen any there since) and a Me-109E I picked up from one of the first hobbyshops before they priced themselves out of my range. I also have the Admiral F-86 which is very pricey, over $120 by the time postage and customs is added in.

I have the 1:18 scale F4U. Can you go into a little detail on how you hung yours? I'm pondering doing the same for mine.

I have these as well. Two Corsairs, 109, 190, two p-51, P-40, Junker and three P-47. I use 80lb fishing line to hang (get clear fishing line). I tie it to the tail and one to the cowling. I join the two over the canopy and have extra left to hang from a central point. Once you have the plane hanging like this, you can turn it like it is banking or diving. I usually hit my head on them walking through the room. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I know the Corsair with colors from Korea was going for $300.00 on E-bay a while ago. I cannot find the P-38 to save my life. Xtreme Forces does add some decent detail for the price. Matchbox collectible WWII aircraft at 1:72 scale are awesome for the price. Check those out.

the CORSAIR...is ....BIG! as a **** comparison..the P-51 to the corsair is like a 109 to the P-51. and the pilot looks top notch against the other pilots i have. definitely a "FLYBOY" look to him. slicked back hair, cocky stature, and to me a realsitic expression that almost has a different meaning when viewed at other angles.. its nice.

im going to try my local (if not closed yet) toys-r-us today. if its shut down....ill go to BADCAT AVIATION again. 4th of July sale! having 21st century P-51's on sale for $37.00. and the A6M2 for $45.00 ...thats if i cant find the P-38 as you are..or maybe a jug, at the toystore.

what UPSETS me about badcat aviation ..(and maybe somebody can explain this to me)

if they are out of stock of an item, they tell you, OR the picture wont be there, until more stock comes in. but if its "out of stock".. its up for sale on thier BADCAT AVIATION E-BAY store!!! with no "buy it now " option http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

like the 21ST CENTURY "BUNKER HILL" corsair, i wanted to get along with the BBI one.

irks me .

AVGWarhawk;

I have seen the P-38, at least one at my local hobby shop, Franciscan Hobbies, in San Francisco. Here is their website,

http://www.franciscanhobbies.com/

I know they ship to many places. There was two different Stukas there last weekend including one in winter white.

The Zero has the wrong interior color for the cockpit. It should be a metallic blue-green.

if you cant find them locally..

try EBAY. badcataviation.com, militarytoyshop.com

i cant find my way to them using the toys -r-us website, but you can get them from there, if you use amazon.
