Did the ac in the FB era have heaters or defrosters, or was the window frost problem solved by facemasks?

Most a/c in the WWII era had heated air from the engine compartment fed into the cockpit, and most had a means of directing some form of defrosting heat or in some cases, raw fuel (on the outside of course)to clear the windshield of oil spray or frost.

However, these didn't always work, and most fighter pilot' memoirs will mention at least one memorable occasion when the wind shield frosted up at an inopportune time, which leads me to think that there were several other not so critical moments when it frosted up.
