Range-only is the best (with dark colors and padlock) (or black color and no padlock)

Gives you 2 eyes instead of 1 (depth perception)

makes up for solid cockpit bars (instead of bifocal) and limited peripheral vision due to monitor constraints

Range icon is the worst to include ..... it helps with making kills

ID is the smallest icon there is

i fly with the number 50 so with ID only all you would see next to me is the No 50

I despise icons in general so I chose the least harmful http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I've only been trying no Icons, no padlock for about 3 days now.
A. I really suck at it!
B. What a freakin blast!

Although I agree distance makes up for depth perception (or "educated guesses" is probably more like the real thing), I think plane type matters more for the game. Judgind distance in pixels is not so hard, IDing five of the little square bastiges is very hard.

ID is a terrible icon to include. Provided the icons are the same type for all players (which they should be, not any of that "friendly only" holding hands stuff) ID means that you know who the other guy is. It's best to find out after you have killed them (onscreen message).

ID is a number on the plane and I think it includes your squad too so it is longer then range (range is 3 digits)

I also don't like when hosts set different types of Icons to phase in and out at different intervals. Like if you get within 100meters, another type of icon pops up.

Just keep it pure with range only, please.

Personaly I've been hosting with the following settings and I like them (off the top of my head):

dot 14/15 k
type 4k
side 2k
range .8k
id .5k

Limited enough to allow for sneak attacks (with cockpit on and externals off). But no need for me to be squinting at the monitor to track something that is not that far away. I like to know who I'm killing so I have the id set at .5. Range to compensate for the lack of depth perception.

I have found it a good balance between realism and fun.

My main problem when flying without icons is that I can easily loose sight of a target even when it is flying at .5k (I use trackIR and not padlock [the triangle does it make it much easier to track]). I find that makes for some frustrating flying.

But to each his own http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

along with such inspiring claims of MW50 should run out after 10 mins you also havent a clue about icons

didnt your "cocooning" to emerge as the FB butterfly also teach you anything about icons either ?

.i.e. YOU IS WRONG

your ID , its what you put as your "number" (which is next to "squadron")

if you have entered 69 , you will see the number 69 in the icon standing in for the ID part of the icon

it can even be simply ONE digit ray , tell me how that is bigger than Range

mis-understandings like this happen when individuals "think" rather than "know"

I would like ID only for foes and name for friendly, and type but nothing gets displayed till within 1k

Type first 1k then lets say .4 for name and ID No distance Like already said it make shooting too easy for the crack shots might aswell make us all rough it out.

Whatever you do make the icons the same for both sides.

I was just in a server where only friendlies had icons.

It totally throws you off in terms of continuity of what you are looking for (i.e. trying to catch mosquitoes among fireflies)

Well, personally i think RANAGE gives away too much information, Players name is too long sometimes... plane type with only friendly icons doesn`t say much... my choice fell on players ID, which is pretty short and still allow you to communicate.

No icons is nice, but i really enjoy teamwork and friendly icons are great help IMO. Having icons on both sides takes element of suprize away, just like externals. But those are my opinions and feel free to you have your own http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

What info is given away by knowing the range of your wingman? An enemy, maybe you might gain some advantage, but what for a wingman?

If the icons are for friendly only, then name and ID is all that I need, to help in chat comms. Using ID only is uneeded complication, since I STILL have to press the "s" key to see what ID is who I address my chat to, a waste of precious time in combat. If there's a huge list of people to scan through, I just don't bother to chat a message if it means me getting into a bad situation while holding the "s" key and reading to find out what I should already know.

BTW, sorry I missed the no icons experiment, Ivan. I'd have like to have seen how that went.

Sorry i should have made it more clearer, RANGE to friendly if he`s in trouble gives you extra info on his persuers IMO.
As far as no icons experiment it didn`t go well at all. 2-3 ppl joined, that`s all. I shut it down and brought it up the way i usually host and it filled up in 30 min and stayed that way overnight. I guess friendly icons are really popular, which is indicated by this poll.

Range... but short range http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I had a server open with these settings sometimes and ppl liked it:

mp_dotrange FRIENDLY DOT 10 COLOR 5 RANGE 1 TYPE 0.5 ID 0.1 NAME 0.1
mp_dotrange FOE DOT 10 COLOR 0.1 RANGE 1 TYPE 0.5 ID 0.1 NAME 0.001

Actually I could set friendly color to 1, would be the same because the highest value out of range, type, ID and name determines at which range they become visible.

the point of ID only icons is to make the Icon as small as possible so it doesnt intrude hanging in the air

knowing your ID & the ID of others is second nature when you have flowen with ID only icons for a while

if you are in a position to be attacked by pressing S for any period of time it doesnt sound like youll be typing any messages either !

having the NAME icon can get hugh & big icons really put off a LOT of players when they started in IL2 way back

as edited icons become the norm , they are becoming more tolerated (especially if they are freindly only)

i fly all settings but i find icons on both sides (ID) helps with gameply when im locked in the Pit
