View Full Version : PC Lock Up

Have now had three or four occasions where screen locks completely, sound just turns into a buzz and I can do nothing except press the Reset button (Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-TAB don't work).

Seems to be during live action video play (don't want to give too much away as a spoiler) but has happened in the first video sequence and in the sequence in the first room (and also in setting the graphics options.

PC desktop, XP Pro, all latest Windows patches, Nvidia GeForce Ti4200, 64MB RAM, latest Nvidia drivers, 521MB RAM, sound card a relatively old Creative Live! with the latest available drivers, but it did play Uru perfectly well.

Am having a similar problem. Happens during live action video sequences and when moving into a new area. During live action video sequences, there is a long pause in the video, but character dialog continues to be heard. After several seconds the video suddenly jumps to "catch up". Completely disruptive to gameplay.

XP-SP2, GeForce2 with current(6177) drivers & 64MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, 503MB RAM, 2.5 GHz Pentium 4.

Update: I have tried rolling back the Nvidia drivers to 6176, but no success. Also have tried Omega drivers and a newer set of beta Nvidia drivers (v6672) but all with the same result. One more observation about this issue is that it does not occur during ALL live action video sequences, such as the opening sequence of the game. It is only occuring when these live action sequences are simultaneous with the hand icon. Video freezes, but audio continues for several seconds, then video jumps to catch up. I have exhausted all of the suggestions that I have read in other message strings (driver updates, reinstalling DirectX9.0c, defragging hard drive, etc). Frustrating problem.

Yes - I cannot guarantee to reproduce it. It has occurred at different times throughout the early part of the game (before first room, in first room, and after first room (don't want to give away any spoilers) - but I tend to think I agree with the latest comments - may be related to some live video and moving the disembodied hand at the same time (though I did get it once in the Options /Graphic setup screen).

I have now tried with a different sound card and it still occurs. Hope to try on a different PC tomorrow (if I can bear going through the 1-2 hour installation process).

Will post any new findings.

Mine locks up either before or right after the opening video. I can't play it at all.

I have 98SE, GeForce FX 5200 128 MB, Sound card is Nvidia nforce (generic), 512 MB RAM, 1.8 GHz, AMD Athlon. Directx 9.0 comes with the game.

By the box, these specs are all good. My drivers are up to date. I closed my background running programs.

If I toggle off all the graphic options it only goes a little further into the game before it freezes up. I emailed tech support...I can't imagine what they are going to tell me to do. Anyone got any ideas?

thanks

OK - so I do now have a working installation (played for a couple of hours now with no lockups) - but only by installing it on my other PC.

This does not work (get the lock-ups as described earlier in this thread):

Athlon XP 2100, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 4 Ti4200 (64MB) Nvidia 6177 drivers, XP Pro with SP2, onboard sound (Creative CT5880) with latest available drivers (but also got the lockups with an oldish Creative Live! PCI card).

This does work (but see below):

Athlon XP 2600, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 4 Ti4200 (128MB) Nvidia 6177 drivers, XP Pro without SP2, onboard sound (Realtek AC97 audio /VIA) with latest drivers.

Second machine was doing an immediate CTD when starting the game (even before the Cyan video plays) when logged on as my normal username (which is an administrator and from which I installed the game). If I log on as the user Administrator, game starts and runs fine.

Hmmm... THESE (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=580100736&m=6021000622) seem to be related...

Although Geoff experienced the "Administrator logon" issue described in other strings, I don't believe that to be the key to the problem described in this string of messages. Geoff and I had the same issue occur. In my case, I installed as an Administrator and launched the game under that same account, but still had this issue occur.

The one difference that he described in his message above that really stands out to me is that the "working" install was on a XP computer that does not have SP2 installed. I have noticed this issue being discussed in other message strings. Just a thought.

Everyone experiencing this is using a nVidia GeForce video card?

Can we get a listing of what your configuration options are for the video card within its driver settings? It's entirely possible some obscure or not so obscure setting or another is causing issues.

How do we figure out our configuration options? My driver for Win 98SE is 6176

right click on desktop, properties, far right tab, advanced, settings are in there for your graphics card.

I've got the same problems as well.

After I entered the first possible room and wanted to go upstairs the pc locks. Only reset helps to restart.

Graphic configuration is standard with a resolution of 1024x768 (in the game).
PC: P4-M, Ati Rage Mobility 7800, latest available drivers, XP with SP2.

Some more research.

1. Don't think it is XP SP2 - I uninstalled SP2 from the computer that is locking and it still locks up.

2. So then I swapped video cards so now the locking machine has the 128MB Ti4200, the working machine has the 64MB Ti4200. The locking machine still locks, but seemed to get further before locking. Haven't yet had a chance to try the game on the 'working' machine to see if it still works.

For info, here is the DxDiag output from the computer that IS locking up (for Ubi /Cyan info).

And some more...

...game works fine on the 'good' PC, but now with the 64MB Ti4200 graphics card.

So looks like is isn't XP SP2, and might not be the Nvidia Card as both cards fail on the 'bad' PC and both work on the 'Good' PC.

I'm experiencing a similar problem with an ATI 9800 PRO video card and an AMD 64 3400+ CPU. I can play the game 5-15 minutes before one of the following two scenarios occurs:

- The screen locks up and the display is garbled while the audio continues; the keyboard is still functional so I can bring up Task Manager and shut down Myst IV without a hard reset of the computer. Don't know whether this is relevant but Myst is using 99% of the CPU during this scenario (as well as during the timespan when the game is playable) --- the game may be designed to grab all available CPU (no other applications are running while playing).
<or>
- Myst crashes to the desktop.

These scenarios have not occurred during playback of any of the live action videos in Tomahna. Given the video card and CPU/RAM of my system I find it difficult to believe they aren't up to the job. I installed and am playing the game with an Administrator account; there were no problems when installing the game (note: I installed the game to run using a DVD-ROM, not a full-fledged disk installation).

If anyone has any ideas about a solution or workaround to the issue I'd be grateful since the game looks great so far despite the *slight* annoyance of constant crashing...

System specs:
----------------------------------
OS: Win 2K Server 5.00.2195 SP4
DirectX 9.0c

Motherboard: Chaintech K8T800-8237
RAM: 2x512Mb
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Video card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/256Mb RAM (installed driver software is latest from ATI's site: wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-051-040825a-017633c)
AGP is set to 8X
Sound card: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Game installation drive: Ultra DMA mode HDD w/38.9 Gb free space after installation.

The new patch seems to solve the lock up problems I've been having. Now I just have a constant buzz on the soundtrack.

Further research...

For those who don't want to read all this thread, I have two very similar spec PCs, one runs Myst IV fine, the other one locks up after about 5 minute's play. Only real difference between the two is the motherboard (both run XP Pro, both have Athlon XP, both have Nvidia Ti4200 cards, which I have swapped between the two during my investigations, both have 512MB RAM).

I have just tried the following on the 'failing' PC. Swapped out the hard disk and did a clean install of Windows ME, installed DirectX 9c, Nvidia drivers (for ME) supplied on the Myst DVD and the sound card drivers from the motherboard installation CD.

Can't say conclusively, but the game does not appear to be locking up now (have got through all the stuff in Tomahna and linked to Spire - I couldn't get anywhere near this before without the computer locking up). There is quite a lot of sound drop-out during play, but at least the game doesn't lock.

I guess the next thing is to try the same with XP Pro (clean install) and just keep adding things back in and checking the game play after every main software installation.

Only thing I have just remembered is that the PC that works is running NIS 2003, while the one that fails is running NIS 2004...wonder if that gives anybody any clues.

Well, the tech guy at Ubisoft removed the link but it was a zip file: Myst_DVD_Fix. I had to install it in the bin file and copy over the older files; and it only worked if you did a full install on the game.

However the game now locks up on me again so I don't know if it will help anyone else.

The tech guy said my IRQs had too many conflicts, but this is more common on the older win 98. I am not sure I want to mess with it. Perhaps I should just upgrade to win xp.

Think I have finally got the lock-ups sorted.

Difference between the two PCs is that the working one has CPU running at about 55 degC, the other was getting up to 85 degC - I started looking at temperature when other applications started locking in the same way as Myst.

Have added a Volcano 7+ heatsink /fan on the CPU to replace the stock cooler that came with the Athlon CPU - now it runs at about 55 degC (but the fan is a bit noisy).
