When a server has difficulty level : " cockpit always on", do you use mirrors to check your six? Any other tips for "six" awareness in such game mode? When mirrors on, more laggs or other problems?

There is no right answer to that question...

Next you'll be telling us to say how old we think you are!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

Hello ikaros (nice name for a flyer, btw),

I never use the mirrors online, they kill my system's frame rates no matter what level of water beauty or screen settings I'm using. To check my six, I just look back (with the help of Track-IR). That's why an unobstructed rear view (or as much so as possible) is a major factor for my liking/disliking individual planes (together with forward view, of course, it's all-round visibility actually).

Cheers,
S.

Mirrors do eat up frame rates, but if your rig can do it, then by all means use your mirror. I can just run water=2 and use mirrors. Back when there was no water=2, I set my graphics to water=1 just so I could keep the mirror on.

now that you talked of mirrors i would like to point to a bug:

the mirrors dont block the sun it shines through them

I only use them when I have to check my makeup. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Not really a bug (not an IL2 bug, anyway), raaid, this has been pointed out before and seems related to your combination of graphics card/drivers. Mirrors and sun behave OK for me with Geforce 6800/nVidia 81.95. Check/update your graphics, or you may try some of the beta graphics dlls that were posted on ORR forum, some were adressing specific nVidia/ATI issues.

S.

No, i find the mirrors next to useless.
Unlike mirrors in real life the viewing angle is too small- a plane has to be practically dead on your six for it to show in the mirror.
Far better to keep looking all around and not relying on the mirror to keep trouble away.
Also, i find the mirror blocks too much of my high/forward view- if we had 6DOF with the trackIR in this game i might change my mind http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

To be technical on mirrors, some aircraft had more than one mirror. The F4U-1A and all later variants had three, one at the top of the canopy and on each side of the canopy. We see the frame rate hit from one mirror, can you imagine three?

No I do not.

Rear mirrors are frame rate killer, in my preferred cockpit view settings they got useless (Shift+F1 anybody?). So I am left with shaking by back once in a while. (My wingmen say my flight pattern is unique.)

At least there is no problem switching from plane to plane.

I have mapped the Mirror Toggle to one of my joystick buttons, and quickly turn them on at various times during a flight. While some planes have great rear visibility, mirrors are handy for other planes.

Like others I too find it preferable not to keep them on due to lower fps, which I always have felt was rather excessive.

Having the mirror on is a great way to know when you are about to be hosed.

If you can see a plane in your mirror, you are already dead. May as well bail out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yes, but not really for spotting enemy as I rely on either my wingmen or scans to pick those up. It is, however, a pretty decent tool for tracking your wingmen when they are creeping up on you...

All goofing aside I have never really noticed the FPS hit....So run mirrors....I also cannot state it having been so often how many times they HAVE saved my 6......Mirrors work well in the sim.

Well I used to use them until now. I was flying @ Spits_vs_109s a coupla hours ago and thought to switch my Hurri's mirror off because things were getting a bit choppy... and feck me, what a difference! Not that much in FPS, perhaps, but the overall smoothness is much better now...
