I was playing Rise of Nations for a while, and I got a question about German history. In this game, the German unique units are Soluldri, Vandals, something else and Landsknechts. So, what are the Souldri (hopefully spelled right) and Landsknechts? I assume country's knights? what is the significance of those two?

I assume it's something like Cossacks from Ukraine...

Check Here (http://www.st-mike.org/groups/german/index.html) for what Landsknechts were.

The Vandals were an east germanic tribe.

Warning : Celeon does the professor now http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

Other EAST germanian tribes were :

- The Goths (Those who defeated mighty Rome´s army´s and burned down Rome afterwards. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

- Bastarnae

- Burgundians

- Rugians

- Gepids

- Heruli

North Germanic tribes

- the Daner or Dani who founded Denmark

- the Suiones that founded Sweden

There are more but it gets to complex there as they mixed up or were assimilated by east germanic tribes

But those others founded what later became Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

The west germanic tribes are the most interesting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif as they founded what later became germany and created many interesting languages like english. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I cant say anything to Solduri.

Solduri is a italian word not a germanic one so it might be that this is the name the Romans gave to this units.

I believe a Solduri is some sort of elite swordsman but i dont know what solduri really translates to.

The only thing i know is that the romans had a hellish fear of the germanians http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

They thought they could deal with them like they did with the celts or gauls........ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

They even had an alliance with the germanians for a few centuries .......

But it didnt worked out as planned so they build a gigantic defense wall thousands of kilometers long (they called them a Limes) to protect Rome from the german "barbarians" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

(In fact the Romans were the ones that behaved like barbarians) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

But we have some italian community members so they might help us with the word Solduri ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I am currently playing Rome Total War (great game) and the Germania facton is constantly attacking my forces in Britannia (these people no longer exist). They will not accept peace and I have not enough army to defeat them. The germans and the egyptians are so hard to defeat that I will never conquer the world with Roman blood.

In the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack (not played yet) there is a facton called Vandals and if they are german then I could employ Celeon as a Diplomat to make an alliance or else I will just leave them alone. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif

oh no The Goths are included in the game and if they have defeated the Rome army then I will have no chance in hell of winning http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif. Suprisingly I had found Gaul easy to defeat.

The ace of the Goths was their highly mobile cav.. If you manage to stall em, you'll have your chance. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
By the way, the Vandals sacked Rome too, but let it be for a high fee (somehow red fabrics en masse were the most wanted ransoms).
Landsknechte were in a total different time (30years-war). They were mostly mercs with fast changing allegiance (correctly written? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif).

The relationship between the germanians and the Romans was a real complex one with lots of turns.

- In the beginning they were enemys (due to Rome´s continous expansion and some parts of germania were occupied by them.

- then the romans forged an alliance with some of the germanian tribes (even becoming part of the empire) to fight and finally beat the slavic "barbarians" and expands rome territorys (All enemys of Rome were described as being barbarians by them)

- this alliance was from the germanian perspective always nothing more than a trick. They hated the Roman´s and used the alliance to gain wealth and time to grow in power.

- then the roman´s were frauded by Arminius, the leader of the united germanian tribes (The famous battle at the Teutoburger forest) in which three roman legions were slaughtered by the germanians.

These are some of the most important things but its too much too explain it all here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Here is an wikipedia article about the vandals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandals)

You also find much more historical infos there. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

This is a monument with a statue of Arminius on the Grotenburg hill in the near of Detmold.

Of course nobody knows what Arminius really looked like and the clothing he wears is pure fantasy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The "gauls" are called "French" today http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

@ mw2000

You can win the game http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And after you did that you choose and play with all other nations in the game including the germanians and conquer Rome http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

A very interesting kind of unit in the game are the germanian woman who fight with axes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif and function as supporting units which give your male warriors extra attack points with their supportive battle cry´s. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

This reminds me of Brunhild..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

The "Ring of the Nibelungs" legend says that she ,the queen of Iceland , was very beautiful and a powerful warrior woman http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

No man could beat her http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif Except Siegfried.

(She was only so powerful because of a magic belt which the gods gave to her) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Thanks for the info Celeon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Yeah those germanian women with axes (think they are called screeching women) are crazy so I use my cavalry to chop them up. It a shame they rather die than become my sexual slave.

The battle of Teutoburger forest you mentioned above, is this the one they included as a single mission where they ambush you out of the forest and you have to get your legions to the garrison for safety.

Rome Total War is my second all time game (behind SH3) but I find this game so hard. I have ran out of money because I do not know how to deal with corruption and my cities are roiting so my armies cannot fight on the front line.

Ah Kristanna Loken http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif the reason why I purchased the Terminator trilogy last week.

The Romans had exactly the same problem. Corruption and greed was what brought the Roman empire to its downfall.

Their enemys played only a secondary role. The Romans destroyed their nation themselves.

This process took about 300 years (There were civilisations that did not exist for so long like the Roman empire needed to fall)

Their solution was simple : Expansion, new territories, plundering resources of other nations ,slaves , slaves , slaves.

But this was no solution it was the illusion of a solution. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif The expansion made the problem of corruption selfishness and competition of the provinces even bigger.

In the game you should try to have one family member as mayor in every city.

Occupy the cities of equal civilized nations when you are at war with them (Egypt for example)

Enslave the population of city´s of barbarian nations (Gauls,Germanians,Thracians and so on)
