My Take On SH4, After 1st Patrol ..

Setting 75% of there about's, only 2 options unchecked. 1.I left off manual targeting and I have contacts on map.


1. Patrol, PH to just off the coast of the main Island of Japan. Marker I've to reach is a star with binoculars. My orders patrol off the coast?

I brought up the manual and had a look at career, there is just a general discription of patrols. I got back to PH without my objective being compeleted?

Like SH3 you are given a grid to go to,SH4 its a star with a symbol in the middle of it. But unlike SH3, in SH4 it does not tell you how long you have to patrol or how close to shore you have to been to get a mission objective Compelete.

Merchants ships..

I bagged 5 for 24.500t on my patrol and with a 75% setting, I got 250 renown. Oh and a Patrol Star.

Down to the nitty gritty, in Sub School when I put a torp into a merchant it put a massive hole in it, I had free camera on just to see what damage is done. I should have done the same on my test patrol, before I as it were went live.

But I would guess it would be the same size of hole. My first 2 sinking were 2 Large Modern Composite Freighters, 1 was 7100 and the other 7200.

The first I fired 3 torps into her all hits, no duds (I have duds on in the options) she lit up ,fire and smoke but kept sailing on. I surfaced and fired about 10 rounds into her and down she went.

The 2nd of these ships, again like the first I put 3 torps into her again all hits, midships and aft of there, again same as the first some fire and smoke but not going down. I hit her with a 4th torp and that put her down.

14,300.

On to the coast of Japan, I come across a large Split Freighter about 3,400t or there abouts. 2 torps I think! Nope wrong! While they hit and she is on fire and smoke is rising, I hit her with another torp. Boom! She is on fire from bow to stern, but still not sinking.

I waited and waited, but still she would not go down. I though she will, I will just plot a course to the marker I have to hit and hit CT and she will go down and I will see a red split ship marker on my Nav map to indicate another sinking. No red sinking marker.

1. She was still afloat and sailing on?
2. You have to see them go down to register the kill???


On my way to my patrol marker I run into a convoy. I'm line up and ready, 2 lovely Large Modern Composite Freighters 7000+ are sailing into my line of fire.

I hit the first with 3 torps and on she goes, like the other on fire and smoking. The 2nd get 2 into her 1 midships and 1 just aft of midship same as the first flames and smoke.

The 2nd one that got the 2 torps is now in front of me, my bow on her stern about 800m away, torp fired boom big splash in her stern. She is turing to starboard, did I read somewhere the devs said that stern shots will mess up there controls? not this time 5 mins later and she is back on course. I line up her stern again, 2 torp, boom! big splash in her stern. Above the deck is on fired but she is not for going down.

I hit those 2 and 2 others in that convoy after I reloaded. Not one sank, there escorts are closing in so I just headed off. Not that the escorts ever got on to me, I think I would have had to have surfaced and waved my hankie and shouted Coo~eee to them, to let them know I was there.


I will not bore you any more, with 2 torps left I sank a small split freigther about 2500t and a bigger european ship 5000t with my deck gun about a dozen or so AP shells.

Got another with my deck gun.

Why these ships are not going down? 1 or 2 are but its at least 4 torps a piece to see them go down.

Do you have to see them sink to get the score?

Those 2 in convoy would have had at least 3 massive hole in them and 1 of them would have had 2 of these holes in her stern.


Parol marker star with flag, get there and sink ships. show complete when you do so!

Star with binoculars, ???? all it says is patrol the coast, but does not say for how long?


Everyone know about the constant explosions when you hit a ship, it was the same in the convoy explosion everywhere but not a sinking?


My take so far, Sh3 gave you a sense of being there, Das Boot if you will, you crew icons gave you a sense you were not alone.

I am sorry, I hope it changes, but SH4 its not just the non sinkings, well they will but it takes at least 4 torps to make sure even then?

Its the lack of atmosphere , nowhere near SH3/GWX 1.02.

With SH3 , I sit here lights off and in the light of my screen. I am in a uboat in WWII and when even 1 torp hits a ship, (thank god Im alone) I make a fist and give a little punch with a "yes!" through gritted teeth.

This so far leave me as cold as a polar bears backside, I line up my shots like SH3 and fired off my torps, but really there is no emotions.

you have you icon interface and sub menus, in she I got ,silly to say about what is after all a game. Sim yes, but still a game, but i got a feeling I had to look after my men and knew them.

I have no interaction with a toolbar with symbols.
