There was a fictional WWII movie I saw a long time ago and I can't remember the name of it. It took place in the mountians of southern Germany and there were some American or British prisoners being held captive in a castle. Somehow one of the prisoners was able to construct a glider from scratch on part of the back roof of the castle. Supposedly, this part of the roof was out of sight of the guards/keepers. The roof was sloped and he/they made tracks that the glider was to be launched with at the proper time. I don't remember the end of the movie as to whether or not the escape in the glider ( to the Swiss border ) was successful or not.

All in all, a pretty far-fetched scenario in the tradition of movies like "The flight of the Pheonix", which still was entertaining anyway. Anyone ever see this movie?

I know this movie, but can`t remember the name. It was indeed a bit corny...

and the glider story was not fictional - the POWs build it, but have not used it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Escape of the Birdmen?

There was some glider escape plan hatched at Colditz.

Seen it ages ago and the History Channel here in Canada did a thing on it as well. They did an interview with one of the POW's that helped build the glider.

Like Franky said it's isn't BS, the glider was constructed and thats are far as it went.

Wow, thanks! You guys nailed it for me. I thought it was a totally fictional story but it seems there is some truth to it after all. And I do remember it being a slow and a bit boring. At least compared to most war movies anyway.

Also, they would have had to be pretty lucky to get the weight and balance right enough for it to be good flyer. But that's not impossible to do.

Does anyone remember the movie "Sole Survivor", that involved a B-25 crashing in the desert? I saw this when I was 9 years old. I only saw this once, and the last scene where the man that was left behind had such an impression on me that I will still think of this movie once in a while.

The castle was Colditz and the glider was real, it was completed just prior to the liberation so was never flown and no one knows what happened to it..... the BBC or one of the UK TV channels did a programme where they constructed a replica of it using the sae materials bar the linen and test flew it.... it was found to be a very good glider and stable, so the escape would have been a winner............

The series that showed it being made and built on TV was called Colditz

The film

was based on a true story that did not have such a happy ending.........

Incidentally one of the saddest web sites I have ever visited and have kept for years on my PC is this one.........

http://www.slaterweb.co.uk/hero.htm

Why did I keep it?, well, read the diary extracts........... whenever i felt down or lonely I just opened that page and read it to myself.......... you realise that life is good and saddened that someone died in such a lonely and sad way....... really brought home life to me and I am so glad the family agree and have posted this on the web.......

These are the people that gave so much so that I may type this today.........not those berated heros, but the ones that died almost anonymously so that I may have the freedom to live my life as I do today...... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Hi Guys,
There was a movie that I saw in the early 70's on TV that I can't remember much about.
It was set in a desert(I think) and there was a German tank chasing a plane(possibly P40)that was damaged and could only fly a short distance at a time (probably cooling system stuffed).
That's all I can remember, any idea's!
& yes I have tried Google but it's not much to go on.
Some bright spark here probably knows it.

Cheers,
TT.

I remember that one, it was called Death Race.
Doug McClure was the pilot and Loyd Bridges was the tank commander.
