We need MUCH more info...

System specs, gameversion etc etc etc.

The more info you give, the more likely we can help.

What have you done to try and get it working?

In windows

go start

All Programmes

Ubisoft folder

Last window

click on set up

when that opens click on joystick, ensure use joystick is ticked then click on properties and enable your stick through that then click ok and close........

you may then need to set some of the switches in the hotas settingswhich cam be accessed in game though the menu by pressing ESC of offline in the main game menu when you start it up.......

For what its worth if your pC will run it you want to get the 1946 DVD as you will get a heck of a lot more planes including some bombers and aircraft carriers etc

I have to agree with Tony.

Definitely buy IL2 1946, Huntinman, the original IL2 Sturmovik is absolutely ancient now.

IL2 1946 includes hundreds of flyable planes and lots of maps, endless downloadble missions/campaigns.

For your joystick problem, have you been into 'control panel' and tried adding a stick in 'game controllers'?
