I don't know maybe somebody else discussed it earlier.
Below you can find statistics how submarines from Germany, Italy and Japan have been sunk during WWII :

Germany Italy Japan
attack by airplanes from land base 33,5 % 13,5 % 4,5 %
attack by airplanes from carriers/ships 6,5 % 1,5 % 8,5 %
bombard of docks 9 % 3,5 % -
attack by escort ships 33,5 % 46,5 % 57 %
attack by submarines 4 % 22 % 19 %
mines 4 % 3,5 % 3 %
other methods 9,5 % 9,5 % 8 %

First impression - war against submarines depended, first of all, on operation area and availability of own bases (docks and airports). I was surprised so many Italian and Japanese submarines were destroyed by other submarines ! Statistics confirmed importance of carriers in Pacific and airplanes in Europe.

Thanks for those figures. Yes, land based aircraft were a huge threat. Might be interesting to compare what range from land the rallying points for convoys were. A good tactic, stay under during daylight hours if you are within 300k's of the enemy coast

Well, sadly aircrafts are no real threat in SH-3.

At least not so much like they were in reality. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Yes, I wonder if any mod boffins could do something on this. I'm sailing home past Ireland but my patrol had me very near Scapa Flow. I sent patrol reports in broad daylight, running on the surface, and so far nothing. Mind you after the time we had with the four DD's I am thankful but I would at least have expected a couple of planes by now

Maybe as in Das Boot, they are at the casino, celebrating your sinking. Seriously, are you using high time comression? That can affect enemy air activity.

what u mean high affect enemy air activity?I use 1024 to 512 time comp because i cant w8 to do even a 3 hours journey, ofc when i am in combat i play with real time and that can take 30min to 1:30 hour the most.Somethink else to ask pls,if i want reinforcements how i call and can i call?I think that with radio and contact report maybe but i ve never seen a german plane or ship to come.

If you are patrolling at 512 or faster time compression it can mess with how the computer handles aircraft missions. This is a flaw in the game that can be exploited, but I am not exactly certain how this pans out all of the time and especially with the different mods. It has been a long time since I played SH3 without any mods so I can't say for sure if this is how it goes or if this only happens with certain mods. I use high time compression going to and from the convoy lanes, like 1024 or 2048. Once in my hunting area I drop down to lower levels, like 256.

As for reinforcements, you cannot radio in for other U-boats to come to your assistance. SH3 does not have wolfpacks, which is a glaring omission by the game's developers. You may see a Luftwaffe airstrike, but that does not happen very often. It also depends on the time of the war and how far away from German airbases the convoy is. Personally, I have never seen the Luftwaffe attack any of my reported contacts, but other players have and have even posted pictures of it.

I was running silent speed once through the Channel, and a ship sunk marker appeared on my map near Dover. I could only assume that the Luftwaffe had something to do with it, because It wasn't me and it would have passed over the top of me. I heard no sound contacts except a couple of Elcos and a DD.
Pity the DD was follwing me, I would love to have seen that

i shoulda made that pic bigger , i was running at flank speeds to get closer so i can see better but by the time i closed in they had run out of ammo and were leaving .i might do that , i gotta few more i might add to that competition thing.

The link below has a a matrix table of u-boat sinking by year that is then broken down into months and how.

All the information has been reproduced from the book
"German U-Boat Losses During World War II - Details of Destruction" by Axel Niestlé
