Hi all,

Today I visited Duxford Airfield Museum near Cambridge UK.

I took a couple of hundred pics of hangars and other buildings for the forthcoming Battle of Britain sim developers (hint to our Brit members to participate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Here are a few pics of aircraft. There were two Mk IX two-seat Spits flying circuits http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As much as I would love to get a ride in one of the two seater Spits, I always cringe a bit when I see one.

They just look 'wrong' to me, sort of like a Hummer that's been converted to be a low rider...

cheers

Hi Horseback,

I agree with you. It's a bit like making a 'stretch' Bentley or Rolls-Royce car http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Were these Spits converted by the Irish Air Force after WW2 for training purposes? A part of my brain tells me so but cannot be relied upon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Actually, I seem to remember India being involved in some of the vandalism.

Let's split the difference and just blame all the countries with names that begin with 'I"!

Regarding two-seater Spitfires Alfred Price's "The Spitfire story" has 10 Mk IX conversions for the Indian Air Force, 6 for the Irish Air Corps, 3 for the Royal Dutch Air Force and 1 for the Royal Egyptian Air Force (as it was then). Most of the Irish Air Corps examples are still in existence as far as I know. It would be interesting to know what happened to the IAF examples.

Very nice pictures.

Aaaahh....Duxford.

My ambition is to buy one of the old officers married quarters there when I retire and sit in the garden listening to the sound of merlins. For me there is no place like it. Incredible atmosphere, especially when you can get access to the old "domestic" side at airshows.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with the place but this is on the wall above my PC.

The Mrs says she will scatter my ashes there and if I don't get the decorating done this weekend it will likely be on Monday morning! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Hi all,

Here's one that I forgot to include. In the foreground is a Bf 109E shot down in 1940 during the Battle of Britain.

In the background is a Hawker Hurricane 1940.

Sorry Toad,

That pic was one of many I took of the Hangar roof structure for the developers of SoW BoB but I included it as a pic here.

Hi

Some lovely pics there MB.

I was there just last week...

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m203/ChickenHawk_2006/PIC00095.jpg

I was most pleased to see that the Vulcan is now under a roof, last time I was there it had been standing on the apron since it got there and was covered in moss.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards.

Hi again,

Just remembered, I took these of the 109. I took the one of the tail cos I knew I would never remember the werk number, and I wanted to look it up later, which I did : http://www.lesbutler.ip3.co.uk/jg26/white4_peter.htm

Anyway, heres my pics :
