Well I sense a LOT of heavy American bias there! `I flown the Spitfire, etec, etc, but the P51 is the best fighter!"

Er, come on. He`s American, he`s BOUND to say that!

Is this just WWII fighters? or any kind.

Each fighter is built for its own individual purpose so they can never be compared overall.

What! No F4 Phantom? How many wars has this plane fought?

BTW, how about the mossie? Fighter-Bomber, Bomber, Fighter, Re-con, Trainer, Target Tower.

sgilewicz
07-12-2005, 05:05 PM
No F15?! The plane is undefeated in 30 years of combat! It's still apples and oranges when comparing such a broad array of plane types so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it and, yes, the F4 should have definitely made that list!

F18 4th,F86 6th, 7th Harrier, Tripehound 9th.

I think it was more to do with what they could get good pics of, and a bit of a fly around.

F-15, a great plane.....Combat? What combat? Iraq? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif If you call that a fair fight. Granted the F-15 can still more than hold its own against most opposition but it hasnt really been tested the way WW2 birds were (in all fairness the same could be said about the F/A-18 I guess). Still a beautiful bird though....

But seriously, maybe the F4 should have made the list. The fact it had its shortcomings in Vietnam (no gun) but adapted is cause enough. Designed for the navy but used by the US air force too (and others), yes the F4 should have made it, but instead of what?

Capt.England
07-13-2005, 01:04 PM
F4 should of been instead of the Tripehound! Just thought of another great fighter(s) that should replace the F18, how about the Sopwith Camel? or SE5a?

sgilewicz
07-13-2005, 02:09 PM
RNZAF, yeah Iraq really can't be counted but the Israeli AF did some serious *ss whuppin' on Syrian Migs back in the early 80's with F15's if I recall (again without a loss!). :-)

I second that motion. F4 Phantom for top ten at the very least.

It was pretty much standard Discovery Channel fare (sic) to honest although it was on a terrestrial channel. My brother said "you cannot have the Spit and the P51 in the running for top slot and choose the Mustang." He was joking of course its a matter of opinion at the end of the day. I said "Well. I'd happily fly the Pony, but I would be thinking about the Spit http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif."

Phil http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

P.S. Please note the grinning smiley I really am only joking.

I saw a very similar program on the Discover Military Channel here in the US. The order was something like this:

10. F-22
9. Harrier
8. Sopwith Camel

Me-262
Mig-15/F-86

4. F-4?
3. Spitfire
2. F-15
1. P-51

I'm missing one in there and the only ones I'm sure about are 10, 2, and 1. One of the guys who rated the planes looked like a crazy nut. However, one of the other guys was that British intelligence analysts guy that I see on every single military show (I think he's with Janes?). He said as great as the Spitfire was, the Mustang was better. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

True that, the Isralis really kicked **** then. Not sure what Migs they were facing though. I stand corrected http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

F-15 vs Su-27 with well trained pilots. Now that would be a test.

I think if the P-51 was better than the Spit, it was for practical reasons rather than perfomance (though I recall the P-51D was slightly faster then the Mk IX using teh same engine).

I remember the saying that went..

"A Mustang can't quite do what a Spitfire can do, but it can do it over Berlin"

The F15 vs SU27 matchup would be real interesting! If my memory serves (I just turned 50 today!) Mig29s were among the Syrian fighters. I, reluctantly, agree that the P51 probably deserves top billing (P47 fan myself). Fun to discuss though.

Interesting list but I prefer Flight Journal's Best WWII Fighter. The aircraft had to have the following criteria.
Constant production improvement in combat capability.
4 mission capability - fighter to fighter, air to ground support, bomber protection and photorecon.
Pilot compatability - how easy was it to fly.
Service record.

European Theatre
1. P-47 Thunderbolt
2. FW-190
3. Spitfire
4. P-51 Mustang
5. Yak-1 and 9
6. Bf-109
7. P-38 Lightning

Pacific Theatre
1. Hellcat
2. Corsair
3. A6M5 Zero

Interesting - 109 rated higher than P38 even taking into account 'ground support' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Presumably this rating would have been arrived at without the standard 'History Channel' bias, too.

Cheers,
Norris

seems there critera is abit biased.
p47s wherent used for photo recon at all, as far as i know, 190 may have, im not sure..
spitfire did ALOT, high and low level. mossie did alot aswell.

p51 did low level photo recon, 109 did some. p38 did a fair bit of photo recon.

id rate the p38 1st or 2nd ground, escort, and 3rd for recon.

and everyone forgets merlin mustang is a 44 aircraft really, and had only 4 50cal for about first 6 months of that i think..

p47 wouldnt be a good interceptor either, low ROC..

i dont think the zero is in the right place on the the list 10th would be better

Well I forgot to add their conclusion...
"The bottom chart shows that the P-47 Thunderbolt flew twice as many sorties, dropped 2,010 percent more bomb tonnage, destroyed 62 percent of the enemy's aircraft in the air and 75 percent on the ground*; it suffered only 58 percent of the losses (per sortie) of the P-51 Mustang runner-up. The P-47 therefore, earned it's reputation as being the best fighter in the ETO."

* I'm not sure how they reached these conclusions, as it seems to me the Mustang scored more both in the air and on the ground.

Fighter P-47 P-51 P-38
Sorties 423,435 213,873 129,820
Bomb tonnage 113,913 5,668 1,771
air to air kills 3,082 4,950 749
air to ground kills 3,202 4,218 1,951
Combat losses 3,077 2,520 1,758
Loss rate per sortie 0.70% 1.20% 1.70%
