I'm doing a write-up about the P-51 (B, C, and D) in FB (and AEP). I figure one guys suggestion on Tactics won't make for a good write up so I'd love to here some of yours. So, what are some of your favorite tactics in FB for the Mustang?

Climb to 5K(or 1 k higher than your foo) dive down on your foo and make sure you get there as fast as possible. Open fire and get that engine or headshot. In other words, BnZ fighting.

I give it a pat as i walk past it, then climb into my trusty old FW190 A8... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but that don't help you alot.

If you miss your firing pass, disengage at top speed until you have acheived sufficient seperation to climb in a shallow angle at high speed. Then make a high speed break turn, and even make a dive to regain high speed. If you time it right, you'll have enough speed for a climb to get back on the enemy's tail. You accelerate pretty quickly, so you can usually make up the difference after a climb if your target is in front of you.

High speed handling is very good, so you can sometimes gain seperation on a more nimble foe even if he is using a lead turn against you.

Just don't slow down http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Learn to use flaps and when. I'm almost always in combat flaps if I'm climbing at anything but high speed, maybe even two notches of flaps.

I'm not the best Mustang driver around but the a/c is less frustrating when you realise that it will only do what you want if you have enough speed to do it.

It seems to me that initial climb is pretty good, but it falls of very quickly. I never ask the plane to do any climbing at under 150 mph indicated because you're asking for a stall or spin. At two notches of flap at a bit higher than 150 mph IAS, I find it climbs OK. Just make sure the enemy is in front of you when you try that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Engage your targets further out, this plane requires good deflection shooting skills. Hitting at convergence range is where the killing takes place.

Shallow extensions work good, if you do zoom up, do it angled enough to keep extending, roll out of it to point away and continue the extension. Never turn back in slow.

Has a wicked tight verticle spiral when you really need it, not even a messer can pull one that tight and fast. Most planes must go straight up and slow up to avoid the overshoot. Can get a many nice reversals this way.

Get under 250mph and you die.

Combat flap at the bottom will dissolve some of the G effect.

B's and C's are born knife fighters and can hold their own against near anything with a bit of manouver altitude. Don't get suckered into a fight right on the deck.

Ritter,

Hey, I recognize you from the CFS3 forum where you asked if there was patch so you could kill pilots in their parachutes! (If I recall, most of those little old ladies got all verklempt & flamed you for it, but I thought it was the funniest post I'd seen in ages!)

(For the record I have NO IDEA what "Verklempt" means--I just borrowed it from Saturday Night Live. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif)

UncleVanya2001, I've never been to the CSF3 forum in my life as I neither own nor play the game. I've been around this community since the original Il-2 (joined back in May of 2002) as Die_Ritterkreuz (Yes I know its suppossed to be Das).

6X.50 is devastating @ convergence and the K14 makes deflection shots a 'sure thing'.

The pony behaves well just above stall speed and @ high AoA, you can't track a 109 or other strong climber @ Co-E, but and E-advantage can put you piper on target for an almost guaranteed kill shot.

When I find myself @ a disadvantage, I like to fly in shallow dives and use high-speed maneuvers to evade. I keep my break turns as shallow as possible when the opponent is outside convergence, only tightening my turn @ the last moment to spoil his aim, and (hopefully) trick him into following my turn. I do my best to stay as fast as possible, so that once Co-E is achieved, I can wrestle the advantage quickly.
