View Full Version : My cockpit is assembled :-)

I highly recomend it.

I won't be building the custom panels for several weeks (still waiting on my backlights and plexiglass), so I'm still using keyboard/hotas/mouse/pedals, but this doesn't detract from its usefullness.

Sitting in this thing with both hands on the stick/thottle, and my feet comfortably planted on my pedals is a complete and total joy. I really can't say enough good stuff about this cockpit design.

Where are the pics Baldie?

I've been following this chain of events since you started it and despite my already having a good workable design, I DL'd the plans and have laid out the measurements and started the cutting. I got the go-ahead from the wife so I struck while the iron was hot.

I've no camera yet!

I'm going to wait untill the electronics are completed before posting pics. I want to maximize the "gee-whiz factor" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What type plywood are you using? I used B/C and consider this a major mistake. The finish, even with paint, is just horrible.

I'll probably do a complete rebuild later, when I've got more space to work with wood (apartment life sucks). I'll definately pay more for better wood because B/C plywood looks really really bad.

Take your time with the cutting, and don't paint it untill you've spent some time using it... chances are, you'll want to do some editing.

I really can't do this cockpit any justice with words. Its an amazing piece of furniture and well worth the cost. Its also a good "father/son bonding" experience http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Aww c'mon give us a few pics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif BTW what's 'B/C plywood'? I was thinking of using MDF if I ever get around to building one using those plans.

In the US, plywood is graded A,B, and C, with A being the best.

B/C is B-grade on one side, C-grade on the other. Nothing else was available at the time, and I was hot to get started, so I used it. Its FUGLY. Live and learn http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was going to go with MDF untill my father remimded me of how poorly the edges of that stuff hold up to abrasion. Since the whole unit goes together with notches, the edges might not hold last very long at all. If you redesigned the thing and used screws to assemble it, you could use MDF without worring about it wearing. But, the notch-style construction is going to be the limiting factor when using MDF.

Do NOT use MDF. That stuff is like banana board. I used the 1/2" sand-ply (found at The Home Depot or Lowes). It's flat as a ...well...board and is furniture quality. It was slightly more expensive than the MDF, but well worth it.

As far as the cuts are concerned, I cheated a bit. We have a full carpentry shop here at work and, being a manager, I emplored the lead carpenter to "help" with the cutting. He's an interested participant (once I explained the purpose). He said he would round the edges and I plan on doing some wood-filler work and using an epoxy paint for durability.

I'm not in a hurry, but will keep you posted on my progress as well.

My cockpit is already done.
When I show people they say, â"Thatâ's just a computer chair and a joystick sitting on a keyboard tray.â"
What do they know?

They know you're nuts.

See, I can point at mine and say "This is my cockpit", and people think "hrm, he has a cockpit, thats rather odd.".

But when you point at your desk and say "this is my cockpit", people are going to think you've lost your marbles. You're calling a desk a cockpit. VERY strange behavior.

I call mine whatever strikes my fancy at the time. It's been referred to as the lair, command center, captain's chair, flight chair.

Oh yeah, and my wife has called it "that F**king monstrosity that's only good for bruising my legs when I try to get in it to look at the finances!"

Thus my justification for a new cockpit! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Very nice work gents I commend u on the design of the seat and the controls on either side..

However I have one major problem with all these cockpits I'm seeing..

With the person in the reclined position their head is WAY TOO FAR from the monitor screen..

If I was designing such a cockpit which I have thought of.. I would design such that the monitor can be mounted on some kind of retractable arm so the pilot can adjust the distance of the monitor from his head..

From the distances I'm seeing it appears as if the user is around 3 feet away from the monitors which appear to be 17" large? This will cause severe eye strain IMHO..

I like the rest of the design though.. I think though that is could be fixed with one of those monitor arms so that the monitor can be positioned 12-18 inches from the users eyeballs..

Otherwise good work!!

OOooooOOOo...good idea. I'm putting a Samsung 213T 21" LCD flat panel on mine and having it positionable would be even better.

Cdn.401GATOR,

I thought the same thing, but trust me, the distance is no problem. I'd even venture to say that the elevated state of the monitor makes it so comfortable that eye-strain is less of a problem.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Baldie...thanks....You finally got me motivated to make my own cockpit too. Revvin...I have that problem solved. I use 1 inch pipe with a base plate attached to each end attached to a piece of plywood to velcro my joystick down. I screw this down onto a floor plate to keep it steady.

I guess I got off easy. The boss said I had to do two things:

Paint it pink (she finally agreed to red).
Attend church with her at least once.

So, I painted it red last week, and attended church with her Sunday morning. I have no other obligations http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

hmmm. i'm getting ideas here. i could bombard the missus with cockpit stuff which i know she would never agree to. and then i could tell her i'd stop pestering her about cockpits if she never asks me to go to church ever again. hmmm. maybe that would work.

My computer desk was 3 feet deep by 5 feet long. Factor in enough room for the chair and we're talking 20 square feet of lost floor-space. Also, the desk was light in color, while the rest of the bedroom is dark colored.

I told her we'd gain several square feet of floor space in the bedroom and I could paint the cockpit to match the rest of the furniture. She was warming up to the idea, but for added measure, I explained that the reason for buying the last new joysticks was the poor ergonomics of the desk.... the wieght of my arm was wearing the sticks out, so an ergonomic cockpit would save us money.

cost about $300

"The "JOYRIDER"s design specs include;

* REAL FEEL responsiveness and balance
* Maximum motion range (positive G's only for now)
* Progressive stick resistance and stability
* Simple low-tech mechanical control activation
* Smooth ball-bearing suspension
* Full motion range, figure "8" stick stir - 2 SECONDS
* 24 degrees of pitch and roll range
* Hands off stability with one finger sensitivity
* Weight range - fully motion tested with a 210 pound pilot
* Can use a variety of display options"

my weight is 280 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ill have to find a work around.
