... do you need to fly on the full real servers like Zekes vs Wildcats and Spit vs 109? Will it work if you just use regular 4.09? I'm still using 4.08 and haven't made the upgrade because I'm not sure which one to get, but I am tired of the wonderwoman servers.

Hi Frank, currently Spits/109's Mods and Zekes/Wildcats are using 4.09B patched with the AAA U1.2 and Spits/109's classic is hosting 4.09M (the team daedulus offering).

Here is the link to the Warbirds of Prey (Zekes/spits are wop servers) website with instructions to what you might need. If you have any questions post them in the general forum over there or feel free to PM me and I'll give you any help I can.

http://www.warbirdsofprey.org/...ile=viewtopic&t=5648 (http://www.warbirdsofprey.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5648)

I think you will enjoy the WOP community, the caliber of pilot skill is first rate and the general atmosphere on the servers is more mature than what you find other places.

Good luck and I hope to see you in the virtual skies.

Can the Ultra Pack be used on servers with only 4.09m?

Yes it comes with a 'switcher' so you can use 4.09m default/vanilla

Well I just downloaded 4.09 and started playing on Spits vs 109. 10 seconds after I started, I got booted for having too much "ping". What, exactly, is that?

'Ping' is basically the time it takes to send a signal from the server to your PC and back again. You can see what this is on HyperLobby before you select a server. If it is slow, there are several possible causes: the distance to the server can be a factor, though I've been online with people from as far as Australia (I'm in the UK), and my ping was only 150 or so milliseconds last time I flew on BG's Ubizoo coop - he's based in the US, I think. Next time you are on HL, take a look at your ping, and see if it is consistantly bad, or whether you were just unlucky. There are so many things that can affect this that without a better idea of what the problem is, it's hard to offer advice.

The swerver admins need to get onboard and all go to some version of 4.09... either modded or unmodded. Relatively soon there will be a single unbraned universal mod pack out...

I'm assuming that 'unbraned' is a typo. More to the point, I'd ask whether you use the term 'relatively' in a geological sense?

Even more to the point, if FrankTheTank was getting kicked for bad ping, it wasn't a version problem...

Apparently my ping is like 620. Got booted from SoV a couple of times today too. Never had this problem before. How do you improve it?

Are you getting similar ping reported for other servers? You don't need to join one to find out what it is, HL tells you beforehand.

Try this site out http://www.pingtest.net/, it might help show whether you have a general problem with your connection, or if it is something specific to a server or HL. Let us know what it reports. It will help if you let us know where you are based too.

Frankthetank36

The test said ping of 20ms. Where is the ping meter on HL, I looked in the game listing room and do not see it. I am near Oakland, CA and the ping test used a server in San Francisco.

EDIT: found the HL ping meter, it says mine is around 100 for Spit/109. I will not be happy if it kicks me again.

This gives a rough indication:

This tells you what it is before you join:

If this is good (less than say 150 ms) and you get kicked when you join, the problem is probably not due to the connection itself.

Ultrapack 2.0 came out last week which has HSFX and UP stuff together, you can switch HSFX on and off and there is a switcher device for other stuff.

Last night I poked around on Hyperlobby and I found at least two servers that I was able to play on, Spits v 109 Mods and Zekes/Wildcats Mods I believe.

When you look at the Hyperlobby page for each server before joining, it should say what mods it has though it's a bit tricky to figure out, I wasn't able to join some.

Well I had a decent ping, joined, and after about 5 minutes I got kicked during a strafing run for having a ping of 650. Then I looked in and the server said I had a ping of 95! Too weird.

Make sure nobody is running large downloads while you play, either on your computer or any other computers that share the same connection. BitTorrent is especially bad for chewing up bandwidth.

Actually you can just click on the colored bars and then hover your mouse over them, and it will tell you exactly what the ping times are, no need to pull up the server info.

So that is what they are for... Always assumed they had something to do with Teamspeak.

True, I'd forgotten that.

FrankTT I'd suggest that erratic ping, which you seem to have, is most likely something that is happening at your end of the connection. Have you got any programs running in the background? Are you sharing an IP connection? All these things can cause a problem, though tracking them down can sometimes be well-nigh impossible. Sometimes just restarting the computer can fix it...

Was watching the bars and most of the time I have 2 or 3 green ones but every now and then it peaks to 5 or 6. When it does for more than a few seconds I get kicked, apparently. Time to go find an ethernet cable...

Anyway I see that the Warbirds of Prey Mod servers have upgraded to UP 2.0. Their site said that mods are optional on Zekes/Wildcats, but apparently they are not because I tried to join and it wouldn't let me. Is it possible to go directly from plain 4.09 (which I now have) to UP 2.0?

AndyJWest
12-29-2009, 11:06 PM
Um, if you're asking about mods, this isn't really the right place, see the forum rules.

An ethernet cable might help with your ping. How were you connected before?

Frankthetank36
12-29-2009, 11:15 PM
Wireless. I'm upstairs and the modem is downstairs, not sure if floors and walls hurt the connection.

AndyJWest
12-29-2009, 11:22 PM
With a wireless connection, it's probably the number of other transmitters in the area that make a difference, more than anything else, though the exacy position of the aerial can sometimes make quite a difference. Is anyone else using the same connection though? That is often the real problem.

You might look if your router offers the setting to allocate bandwith to the users or to set a prioriy to some traffic.

Probably playing Mafia Wars or Farmtown of MyFacebook or whatever, lol. The first thing to check when multiple people are sharing your internet connection and you have ping.speed issues is who is doing what on their pc.

Hey Frank,

I'm in Concord, CA and I just switched from AT&T uverse to Astound cable. My ping on the WoP servers changed from an avg of around 100ms to around 400ms. On top of that, the ping as I played became extremely variable after the change in broadband provider. For example, I'd be playing on any given server - say Skies of Valor or Warclouds - and out of he blue my ping indicator on the top-right of the game screen will jump from 2 to 5 "bars", then turn red, then go back to 2 bars. So, all this is to say that I'm physically near you and yet a change in provider has made a big difference in the ping latency I experience. And to think, I switched because I was actually going to get a better deal on a faster connection! Needless to say I'm switching back. I guess you get what you pay for (sometimes).

All that said, what others have posted about people using up bandwidth, especially for bit torrent apps, is certainly true. If you're not on a dedicated cable, you're sharing the pipe not only with those in your house, but everyone else on your block, so if there are heavy users in The neighborhood, that could also slow you down.

Well, got Ultrapack 2.0 and when I try to join Zekes/Wildcats and Spits/109s w/mods it STILL won't let me join, says something about 4.09m+MDS v1.1 for Ultrapack. What is that?

Mds is zutis moving dogfight server, you will have to enable it through jsmge, make sure its the 1.1 version you enable, not 1.01, which is in there as well. Will take you 30 seconds to do!

Then your good to go, enjoy!

Well, now I'm back from vacation and it kicks me for ping regardless of whether or not I'm using an ethernet cable. WTF? The area is pretty congested.
