View Full Version : Oleg, why Il2 can't have real engine sounds?

Why most of the Il2 planes sound alike? WW2 piston aircrafts had such unique sounds, you could identify one by only hearing it.

Here's what I'm talking about:

This has been addressed before. Oleg designed a doppler effect into the sound engine, and there is no way to use real sounds with this apparently. (he said something to this effect a long time ago)

The sound engine uses multiple layers of synthesized sounds to create various effects to the sound system. Thats why airplanes sound so cool when you fly past them...the pitch changes are properly calculated and not just an estimation based on a sample.

The loss? It doesn't sound quite real yet...but as sound cards evolve and with the next game I expect to hear a much more authentic merlin engine sound.

I come from the DOS days of Aces Over Europe where all planes had the same sound. I guess I'm more easily impressed.

Very poor explanation for a very poor ingame sound

hi,
agree,
..indeed 'poor' sounds in this PC-sim .
if You want to hear nice sounds in games,
try some racing games like 'Colin McRally ' F1 + DM races ...

we are looking forward and hope for the image of this developer that he create more real sounds even to the plane engines in the future.

with EAX on - I get hardly any sound looking straight ahead, but if I slightly turn my head I hear the engine really well. Unless of course it's multi-engine, then it sounds really good

So far the 109 and la5n have the best engine sounds for single engine.

I use the SBLive card, with two channels (front and rear) with a base/floor woofer. Although the individual aircraft engines sound alike, in general the sounds are very good.

You can hear sounds as if you were in a 3D environment, and the propwash sounds great. Damage hits (and other damage sounds) are also good, but could be improved a bit. For example, when the P-40 canopy gets bullet holes, no sound is heard.

In my opinion, FB is WW2F on steroids, and is probably the best ww2 combat sim available.

I'm sure future combat simulations will improve.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gifI know I might be accused of bias, but if any of you have played CFS3 in the past and know the Sim-Outhouse, then you would be NUTS to not have LuftwaffeOberst's a/c sounds in there. After listening to them practically in my sleep I kinda got used to them. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Luftie would love to be able to lend a hand on the sounds for IL2-FB but as he's not "in the circle" he can't.

I mean, what better endorsement for sounds can you get than the Luftwaffe museum in Munich?

Oh well, have to deal with lawnmower sounds for the moment. It's a minor thing compared to the other issues addressed on this board, IMHO.

It's too bad that sounds can't be third partied , just like the missions, or have them done by others like the 3D models. Then they could go thru Oleg just like the AEP pack. I'd buy an improved sound pack in a second!

BUMP

I want to know if oleg is going to add any new sounds to il2 and if BoB is going to have few sounds like il2 or every plane is going to have a unique one.

Holywood spoiled too many people.

I understand people wanting better and more realistic sounds, but just don't expect that they'd be "cool" - in many cases reality isn't just what you expect.

You want a realistic engine sound? Simply, turn your speaker volume way up, and place speakers all around you, so the sound is large enough to shake the window. How many "various and cool sounds", would one hear in a noise pit like that?

I believe Oleg kind of stated that there are many limitations in FB engine that make some things impossible. BOB will be a whole different ball game. Maybe i am deaf person...but to me FB sounds fenomenal on friday night when wife is at work and little one at my parents... i wonder what people next door are thinking http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

I don't need anything cool, check the link I posted above. p39 and p51 didn't sound the same, I think this is as wrong as p51 and p39 handle the same way or look the same way. And its not only those two planes, there actually only 3-4 engine sounds for 100 planes.

I just upgraded to Audigy 2 and from where I normally use the game, in cockpit, its sounds GREAT, esp. the planes I usually fly: 109, 190 and 262.

IceFire, I too come from the days of DOS and hearing basically ONE sound for all aircraft engines. It`s not that we`re easily impressed, it`s just that we appreciate how BAD it was before.
