There seems to be a shortage of standalone PF servers on UBI and I haven't had much luck finding them on Hyperlobby.

So being new to the flight sim community I would like to help out. I am currently dealing with router issues. See my post here

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=4861000042 comments are welcome.

But It appears that with the help of a forum member that may be in the bag now. Now onto the next item on the list. I have an extra (older) machine other than my gaming rig that I would like to host with. My gaming rig is alot faster etc but from what understand it is better to host off a machine that isn't being "played on" Correct me if I am wrong.

From what I have read there is not dedicated server support as of yet. Not that I am an expert on the subject. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I think the dedicated server option uses less resources to run the game is this correct?

My proposed server machine specs.

2200XP AMD processor
1024mb PC2100 ram
Geforce TI4600 128mb
Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer 5.1

I have a cable connection. Nothing spectacular don't have the upload and download speeds at this time. I think the upload runs around 340 to 380kbsec can't remember the download. Pretty standard connection.

Besides the obvious, turn off background programs, No screensaver etc. I have a couple of questions on how to make it the best it can be for anyone playing on it.

I will be connecting to it from my other machine also during the majority of the time I have it up. I will however leave it on for others to use while I am not on it.

1) Is it possible for me to connect to the server machine with my gaming machine thru my LAN (direct IP) in lieu of connecting through UBI or HL with the machine up on UBI or HL for others to join? I am thinking this may save bandwidth. EXAMPLE: Create a game on UBI with my server machine and connect to it via IP connection with my gaming machine. My gaming machine would not be connected to UBI.

2) Can I just use the server machine to start the game select the type and settings and not fly? I haven't payed too much attention to the different options there are in multi-player. I have only joined DF rooms so far.

3) Should I turn down all the settings ie: video, disable sound, run it in a window to conserve resources? I don't care what it looks like from the server machine.

4) How many players should I allow with these specs? 8 to 10? I know alot of this depends on my internet speed.

Any other tips are welcome.

Thanks for your comments

Yes, use internal, router assigned IP.

If i were you i would wait for dedicated server release and run dedicated.

If you run server VIA game, then yes, lowest settings possible. If you run dedicated server, doesn`t really matter. All you will see is DOS window http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hi,
With dedicated you probably could host for 20... just make sure you are really getting 500kbps+ upload http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Sometimes providers say that you do... while it`s not entirely true. What`s your download speed?
