View Full Version : How do I switch planes?

Ok - been playing for a while, largely offline, and to add a bit of variety while waiting for the next 2 weeks to elapse ;-) thought I'd have a go at flying some of the AI plane (specifically the Cataline, one of my all time fav. aircraft). So browsed the threads, and here's what I did:

1)set up a multiplayer dogfight.
2) Edited the mis file and added in PBY_Nomad to the flight group
3) Launched the game without going back into FMB

4) Chose one of the available player aircraft first (the Cat didn't show up anyway)

5) NOW THE BIT I DON'T GET! The various threads say jump to the AI plane. But how - Can't find a "jump" button anywhere... must be being really dense here - couldn't see it in the threads, the control menu or the paper instructions (last act of a desperate man where computers are concerned)

Two questions really - firstly have I set the game up right in the first place or did I miss something. Second - how do I switch planes. If I crash or bale out and hit re-fly it just gives me the player aircraft option again so pretty stumped.

Sorry if it's a really dumb question!

Jumping into AI planes is an unofficial and unsupported way to fly planes that aren`t designed by Oleg to be flown by Players. In my 2 or so years of flying FB, I`ve never known how to do this (and I don`t wish to know).

What I do know is you`ll have no cockpit and the aircraft will not have a proper flight model. There are literally dozens of flyable planes, I`ll never understand why people want to jury-rig flying something that isn`t meant to be. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Well, dunno if your last comment if a bit tongue in cheek or not, but it would seem to me that most of the history of aviation has been furthered by people jury rigging stuff to make it fly http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

However, wasn't meaning to start a heated debate, was just wondering how you jump planes so I can muck around with a few other planes mainly for screenshot and movie purposes. To be honest the way i fly, accurate flight models are unlikely to make much of a difference... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Make sure you have externals on. Then it should just work. You should be able to select it normally in the aircraft list.
But doesnt the PBY need water to take off? So it probably wont show on a normal airbase. There is a map with a waterbased homebase btw.

By jump to AI plane they mean select it and fly.. I think. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Ok - thanks for the advice...
Will try something with wheels first. I had been trying airstarts to avoid the taking off in water problem but maybe that's been causing the probs.
When you say externals on, you mean in the difficulty settings? Because obviously you can't hit f2 until after you've chosen your ride... will give it a go after work http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

IIRC, You have to pick a flyable type first (at least switch the engine on).

Then hit refly, and THEN you can pick an AI type.

Umm, are you air-starting? If not, you might want to try the seaplane Zero (flyable), before taking off in the PBY.

ps - yes, externals in difficulty - though I'm not sure this is essential.
You'll probably want WW view too, for the instruments.

Thanks m8 - now if I could just get out of work!!!

Yup - bin tooling around in that zero quite a bit - love it! To be honest that's why i fancy the cat, followed by the big 4 engine japanese HK thingy. Am working on a Sunderland skin but not really a skinner. Never got one before IL2skins went down tho I'm sure there's one out there somewhere. Anyway, really fancy trying the Sunderland vs 8 Ju88 trick one day. But first have to work out how to get into an AI bird!!!

I'm wondering if I got the name of the plane slightly wrong in the .mis file - think I put PBN_Nomad but will try a few other combos and a few other planes to make sure I've got it right. I vaguely recall someone posting a list of all the plane types as used in the .mis files but can't find it with the search function...

Excellent!
I owe u 1 m8... have just spotted my mistake - put in PBN-Nomad, instead of PBN-1 or PBN-6. Am away in half an hour to try it out...

Cheers everyone - this forum is the best!

You can switch to an AI plane in flight if you want. The method is the same as in BF1942.

Fly over the other plane and bail out. You must hit the other plane before your parachute opens.

When you land on the other plane, press the 'open canopy' button, and you will switch to that plane. If it's flyable, you will be in the cockpit. If AI, it will be in external camera. The existing AI pilot will be ejected, like it works in GTA.

If external camera is disabled, you'll just see empty landscape, and wont be able to control the plane.

Sorry guys - didn't get the last 2 replies till this morning! Was up wa-aa-ay too late flying aound in stuff - Fw189 is my fav. - what a plane. I think you could make a serious mission for this to reconnoitre forward enemy artillery and have huge fun.

Fennec - are you serious?! Have you managed to actually do this?? I can't hit a plane with cannon shells travelling at 900m/s - I've got no chance with a low velicity pilot!!! On the otherhand - what a track file to have - can see a whole SOE movie coming along with Bond-esque stunts galore. Can you do this in Single missions or only in multiplayer?

Anyway - big thanks again to everyone.

Bud

I dont know if Fennec is a 4.0 beta tester http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif, it is not possible in 3.04m (no I haven't tried).

This is how you change aircraft in 'Wings of War'. You sommersault out of your fighter into a recon plane, or vice versa. This happens automatically though; as mission objectives change.
