So what do the kaleuns around here do ?
What is your standard convoy attack procedure ?

I'm in June 41, Patrol 19. My standard convoy attck procedure is:

1. Detect (doh!)
2. Pick the most important targets. Usually 2 or 3.
3. Plot exact (to the degree if possible, btw can anyone please help on HOW to plot the exact course for a contact?) course for the targets.
4. Plot intercept course at 90 degrees to targets' course.
5. Lie in ambush. Allow escorts to pass right by.
6.Attack targets from less than 500 meters, try to sink every one.
7. Dive to medium depth 40meters or so, and go 1 knot towards incoming warshps.
8.Plot course for surface and flank convoy surfaced.
9. Start again from step 1.

I usually do not get detected 99% of the time. Once I've flanked the convoy I reintercept, and again hit the most important targets. I repeat this till all the big ships are sunk. Then I look for another convoy. If one of the targets survives the single torp alocated to it. I go and sit right under it or follow it, attack ONLY that target, then reposition for another attack.

I have engaged a destoryer on two occasions, one was in patrol 3 when he simply would not leave me alone. I surfaced to peri depth and fired an aft torp while he was in attack run, killing him. The second time I was surfaced in heavy fog and he popped 400m dead ahead absolutely no chance of evading him, I fired tube 1 into the port side, point blank and crash dived under him, and he was dead in the water. I never engage escorts, or any other military ships unless they are capital ships.

It's somethingi read about from Erich Hartmann, a Luftwaffe officer, he would kill only one or two planes in an attack, and never get entangled in a prolonged fight. he would also simply go home if the fight was going against him. if the enemy was superior or had the advantage he would go home. He survived the war and got 352 kills to his credit. The greatest ace of all time.

Please share your tactics/thoughts/opinions.

Salute !

I have a different approach, it can be seen in the U-803's atlantic patrol report. I try to get in position so that the front escort passes at about 700 meters at least, then go ahead at

1 knot and get myself in the middle of a convoy. After that, you don't even need the TDC, as you can easily estimate the gyro angles, up to 1200 meters. It gets harder after

that. After you fired both bow and stern tubes, do NOT go silent. Let them reload. If you are in the middle of a convoy, chances are the merchants will get in the way of ecorts.

You can then hit a couple more ships. After the convoy passes overhead, either:
a) slip quietly away or,
b)crash dive and release decoys at 60 meters, THEN go silent and continue diving to about 120 at least.

If it's early in the war and there are no decoys, chances are the escorts will lose you if you dive too deep. Do NOT attack convoys in shallow water, less than 40 meters. You can't dive too far, and the escorts can still blow you up even with random-depth shots.

Yeahh, this type of information is to take with many caution , like the 500 or more tanks destroyed by Rudel with his Ju-87.There were more boost of propaganda to keep the moral up, like many victories claimed also in North Africa againt the RAF,SAAF,RAAF and USAAF.Was the same in Korea about the number of MiG destroyed by the USAF.Today many archives are open for consult about the really losses of this squadrons, Wings other Air Forces.Sometimes there are 40% or more of overclaims.
I recommended you( if you can read french);"Le Fana de l`Aviation" with many articles about many of this "Mythes"or "Legends" in the history of the military aviation, with a impartial optic and taking in count both sides involved.
