This is a historical campaign flying with the 19th Fighter Squadron of the 318th Fighter Group and their campaign in the Marianas. Fly from Saipan in a P-47D-22 on deadly ground attack missions. Provide close airsupport for the ground forces. Suppress enemy airfields and fly reconnaisance over enemy territory.

Is this the unit that arrived off Saipan aboard Jeep carriers, and flew their first mission after being catapulted off the CVEs?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

it is. you can even get them launched from the jeepcarriers if you edit the vessels speed (to unrealistic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) in the missionfile http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes the P-47s were delivered to Saipan by CVE's. When I wrote the launch mission though, it wasn't possible to takeoff from an escort carrier with a P-47. I haven't tried it with 4.07.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Most of the flying is around Saipan. Some Missions go to Tinian, but two of them go to Rota. Other then the two Rota missions they are fairly short flights

How is everyone doing with this campaign? People should of finished it by now and I was wondering what you thought of it.

I haven't downloaded yet but this sounds good. I was waiting for someone to do this campaign! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll have a look asap!

Hello BH-21,

I've finished the campaign. I enjoyed it, and greatly admired the detail, but I thought it could have done with a bit more action.

I've been a bit wary about making comments, as I've got my own campaign up in Mission4Today as well.

With "Hell in the Pacific - Peleliu" I veered away from historical accuracy, by introducing a lot more Japanese air encounters than were actually experienced during the Peleliu campaign. I think you've been much more historical, but there were times when I was itching for some air-to-air combat.

I think if you added some of these elements to "Saipan Thunderbolts" (maybe assisting the Navy nightfighters?) it would elevate it to a true classic. But would that be too much of a historical compromise?

Its always a balance between making a campaign entertaining and making one that is purely historical. I've shied away from purely historical as the game can't quite do that anyways but I tend to focus on taking as many stories out from a given scenario and trying to wrap those into something fun.

I've played the first couple of missions in this campaign. There are some really good parts and some parts that I might make suggestions on. I'll try and finish it up or get a little further on before I post about that but its a well put together package, the skins are great, and I've had some fun which is what the idea is.

Thanks fellas. The 318th Historically upon arriving at Saipan didn't encounter the enemy in the air for 4 months. I wanted to make a historical ground attack campaign and this looked like a good subject when I started it two years ago. The problem with a later version with air combat for them at Saipan is the map is totally lacking in many features that I haven't yet figured out how to add myself. As for more action thats one reason I make mostly single missions. In real life though the majority of the missions flown were down right boring and the main antagonists were the weather and mechanical reliablity. Both of which we haven't the ablity to vary in a mission. Mission and Campaign makers are ultimately only as good as the tools they have to work with.
