If I were to guess (and I will http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif) I reckon that it is some sort of early electronic warfare version, I know the RAF used B-17s for this purpose.
I've found a link whilst looking for a picture of a RAF ECM B-17, and I found this.

http://www.dean-boys.com/images/b17.jpg
PB-1W-- Twenty Four B-17Gs were modified to carry the APS-20 radar for use by the Navy in early warning in 1945. They were to late for W.W.II but were used until 1955, when they were replaced by the WV-2

Here is the website.

the first B17 pic is not a radome, but a lifeboat to drop to downed aircrew in the sea

As soon as I saw it I thought radome but now that you mention it I can make it out now, the front part of the boat (I don't know what it's called) is facing forwards.

"WHODUNIT The 2nd" looks like a B-25. It certainly isn't a B-17. Any information on that picture?

(Okay, state the obvious. B-25C 92-53431)

Gotta love that fuselage art! A pregnant pin-up with the title "whodunit".. And I thought I made some pretty scandalous fictional noseart for IL-2.. This is classic.

Taken 2 weeks ago.
Sorry about cropping the left edge. I was trying to rest my camera on something to steady it and taking picks with the timer since the lighting at the museum is pretty dark. I bumped it off center accidentally.

This is actually an A-3 Lifeboat of the type that was carried by the SB-29.
