Folks,

Upgraded my CPU and system board so I have to reinstall everything.

I had previously done PF as a standalone. In the light of the anticipated additions, would it be better to do the re-install as a merged?

All opinions appreciated!

I have the merged install. Reasons being, I get more aircraft, more places to fly, more variety, more offline play, more online play and to be honest the suport does seem to sway more towards the merged install rather than the standalone (such as additional aircraft and maps that will only work on merged). Thats my opinion. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think both are possible with a little tweaking.

Sure why would ya not go 'merged' although yeah as Longjocks said you can have both merged and standalone on same pc.I suppose only a small minority of the online guys are exclusively 'standalone' and you certainly would have no reason to go standalone if mostly an offliner like me...

Let me answer the initial question with another question:

Have you ever gotten a birthday cake with no frosting on it? Can't be as good as the whole thing, now could it

The only plus to PF alone as far as I've seen is there are new ppls who learning to play online while most veterans play on the merged version. I don't see any advantage for a veteran ppl to play PF alone. So if you are new don't be afraid in joining with us online. www.predatorsquad.com/pfsaa/ (http://www.predatorsquad.com/pfsaa) (opps. the link should work now)
PF alone server ipaddress is 69.9.37.146:21006

What about those of us that don't want to fly/face 109's and/or Yaks? I have FB and PF as well as the original IL2, but it's the PTO match-ups that I love most. How does the merged version work?

I have to be honest, the first few times I went online I heard horror stories about the "Hawks" on Hyper lobby. It's probably not true, but in other flight sims, most the vets are not very newbie friendly, unless it's to pad their kill ratio. A lot of us newcomers to the online world of IL2 might be a bit nervous about flying being torn apart by you pro's. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There is basicly the same server for the merged. it called "Zeke vs Wildcats" on hobbylobby (this is full of vets) and has the same maps with the same planes( maybe a German bombers for Japan). I believe it's ipaddress is 69.9.37.146:21005 instead of 21006 which is the pf alone. p.s.There is just one mission on Pf alone I haven't seen on the merged version though. It offers all the planes in PF.

p.s. There are a few experience players when we get together on the stand alone server but still has a better chance of surviving than the merged . Our next plan meeting is Sunday at 5 pm Eastern Time USA (-5 hours gmt).

Merge gives you PF but also plays with the much older and more developed FB Gold (or FB + AcesExpansion Pac sold seperately). FB Gold (or FB+AEP) is cheaper than a box of PF now anyway.

Future additions of Pacific stuff will be available for PF standalone. Future NON Pacific stuff will require FB+PF.

FB+PF will let you make use of have any additions Pacific and Europe.

I've got both merged and standalone installs on my machine and they both work great, but you'll have twice the downloads and patches to perform periodically http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

As far as not wanting to face the "Hawks" on HL, easy - try joining one of the several great COOPS there and learn the ropes by flying with some of the Hawks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Cheers!

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif If you're nervous about versing pros, fly an Il2 type 3m. Those 37mm cannons can, and have blown 323's outta the sky in one shot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Merged all the way, baby!!

I've got it installed both ways, 90% of the time I go to the merged version. The planes, the missions, the campaigns, so much to do I'm delirious!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I always thought PF was a "reverse add-on" that would make people buy the previous IL-2 titles. $$$ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Thanks much, everyone!

Looks like the votes favor merged. There's some truth to the StG77_Fritz_X's comment about PF getting people to buy previous titles. I had IL-2 (original) then bought FB when it came out but held off on AEP until after PF made me catch the "flying bug" again (so many games, so little time...).

BF109's in the pacific? Heh heh. Shades of "Secret Weapons Over Normandy".
