I hope this is on topic; this will be soon part of our gaming world, and SoW will be Directx 11 compatible.

I was looking through the internet trying to find out about DirectX11 as it keeps cropping up in the discussions about Sow:BoB at the banana forum.
I found these youtube videos explaining the differences between the versions of direxctx, and thought I'd post them for the benefit of others who like me are unaware of these developments.

The differences look amazing to me!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Wow that aircraft demo IS spectacular. On an unrelated topic Im a bit concerned that there seems to be an East Vs West theme to it Harriers and Tomcats Vs "Bisons"(?) and Flankers ...Now Charlie Sheen in the movie 'Hot Shots' (and Part Deux!) was taking the pee out of Sadaam Hussein the best part of a decade before the Gulf War so should we be concerned ...do Hollywood and the entertainment industry (Is this video released by Microsoft?) know history before it happens...Hmm...

I always like direct x over the other software video driver for il-2. Faster renderings and frame rate imo. This looks even better. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Here's another couple of examples - showing lighting changes mainly.
The possibilities are mind boggling!!

Here's another good explanation of the difference between Directx 10 and 11:

This pretty much answers why to not jump into the DX 10 world and throw your money away.

Plus, Oleg's new sim is still dx 9 compatible so upgrading can wait

mind you, upgrading in my financial situation is a no-go at this point http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Yeah DX 11 uses 'Adaptive Sub-Divisions' for increasing geometry and details along with bump maps and other procedural maps.

It looks like the sub-divs are being generated form the texture maps using height-field process.

no worry, it looks as though you'd only need to upgrade the graphics card to make use of the dx 11 features.
I think it will be some time, maybe another year or two before we see computers powerful enough to run the software in a game more comfortably.
i could be wrong, but we shall see.

Yep, and it doesn't work for crap, because you can't run Dx10 on XP. Everyone tried to blame Microsoft and claim it was a conspiracy to force people to upgrade, but no, 10 year old OS's can't be made to run new stuff, period.

It looks like tesselation has to be programmed into the polygon map or texture (applied to bump-mapped textures only?). Which answers one of the questions I had about applying it to a flight sim. Interpolating polys with hardware is a good way to increase detail, but if it had been implemented across the entire mesh, it would probably introduce artifacts into detailed aircraft models that shouldn't be there. As it stands, it looks like the effect will be limited to things like raised rivets and panel gaps, and not bumping out the RAF roundel to three dimensions.

Windows 7 and a DX11 card are looking like good things to have for SoW:BoB. Hopefully the hardware will be out long enough before the sim for any bugs to have been worked out. It also means I'll have to get re-acquainted with ATi/AMD products. It's been a few years.

I read from decent sources that a lot/all of the crysis DX10 features could be unlocked in XP, by changing a few config files. I never bothered to do it myself, though.

I've honestly never seen the difference between DX9 and DX10.

As far as I can tell there is not going to be a big affect on performance. The beauty is that these are just textures.
Oleg recently talked (at the banana forum) about how the bomb holes on airfields won't have to be made from polygons. They will just be textures: The texture will change with point ov view.

Quote about tessellation in Dx11:

"The distinguishing feature of the benchmark is a hardware tessellation that is a scalable technology aimed for automatic subdivision of polygons into smaller and finer pieces, so that developers can gain a more detailed look of their games almost free of charge in terms of performance,"

from the Tom's Hardware article here:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/...=tessellation&xtcr=4 (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/DirectX-Benchmark-Demo-Tessellation-Heaven,news-32129.html?xtmc=tessellation&xtcr=4)

Very informative movies. Thanks.
I have seen the airplane movie before. Perhaps some on this forum put up a link to it.
I remember thinking that the Harrier would be very fun to fly.

Isnt this AC demo simply a rendered intro/trailer to this arcade game Hawx!?

I personally dont believe that that's actual ingame footage...

Finally a demo that clearly and concisely shows me what I get going from one DirectX install to another. Bravo, finally makes sense.
