F6F-3 "White 41" Tri Color VF-17.
F6F-5 "White 22" Overall Semi glossy sea blue VF-17.

VF-17 was one of the most successful units involved in the final carrier push into Japanese home waters in 1945, scoring 161 kills between February and May. Its weapon was the F6F-5 Hellcat (72 birds split between VF- and VBF-17), although a handfull of late-build -3's also saw service into the Okinawa campaign- indeed, 'White 41' was probably one of the last of its type in TF-58. Twelve pilots achieved ace status on this Deployment with VF-17 (The first being in F4U's), plus a furhter 8 aces with 'twin' unit VBF-17.

Blank and no marking for both -3 and -5

Hey WarWolfe1,I love the skins{as you can see}but I'm just curious why no VF-17 squad markings [Jolly Rodger]by the engine cowl, did the Navy make them take them off in 45',I know the f4u's had them in the Solomons.....anyway great work!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Boom I'm affraid I made a mistake on these skins, I'll be updating them today. Did some futher reserch and see that I'm miss the wing ID bolcks like those on the tail. And the jolly roger flag. In the photo I have the fuse is not close up,and it seemed the flags were not in use any longer but the flag should be there. Thanx.

I've seen the jolly roger insignia in profile art for these Hellcats, but I have two photos without it. Then I have this:

http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/2396/bonesnobones8mi.jpg

This could be a skull & crossbones, but it's really hard to tell. When VF-17 reformed, few if any of the pilots from the Solomons tour were in the unit. Roger Hedrick and some of the others went to VF-84, flying Corsairs off of Bunker Hill, which was the original VF-17's assigned ship.

Thats what I Found aswell.

Also I had read that prehaps none to few of the orignal men from the F4U days were back with VF-17 when it was in hellcats. That was what led me to belevie that the flag had been dropped. since the pic I have doesn't seem to have it, but to be honest it is much to far away to spot something the size of a hand.

In which case the flage is still to big http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Thanks Ronnco http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif.

Thanks for having faith Boom.

Hello R Target,I was wondering in the profile art that you refer to,is tht insigna in the same location as the above photo?....because as you & WarWolfe1 know on the F4U'S they were between the cowl vents & propeller.

I believe the j.r. was on the cowling, similar to the F4U's. It looks to me like somebody extrapolated a little bit.

WWII USN squadrons can be very confusing.

@mr.siCkstar: unzip the skins to Ubi Soft/IL2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles/paint Schemes/Skins/F6F-5. Or whichever plane it is. Doublecheck the folder you unzipped to to make sure the're not still in the folder they came in.

Copy the .bmp files from the archive to your /paintschemes/skins/F6F5/ folder. Then start the game and choose the apropriate skin on your aircraft. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/typing.gif

Nice work btw Star Wolfe http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

there seemed to be 3 files marked F6F-3 and 3 marked F6F-5... I copied them into their respective folders in the paintschemes\skins folder...

ie. in the F6F-3 and the F6F-5 folders.

that cool?
