Yo noob!
I love noobs, you keep the genre alive.

I dunno if you know but..
most online servers (99%) use the hyperlobby client downloaded here (http://hyperfighter.sk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=2&orderby=dateA).
Now doubt some forum patrons will be along

I presume you have IL2 46 - that's the latest version of the game and which most servers are now running I believe.

Hold on to your hat...

1) 'Il2 Sturmovik' (Il2 "original") released in 1999 (i think) great game 1 or 2 small patches.

2) Il2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles (FB)- like an uber patch for the original, FB was a stand alone payware sim. You DIDNT need the original to play this. There were more a/c, better FMs and more maps and better textures. Some patches.

3) 'Ace Expansion Pack' (AEP) - this was a a payware addon to FB that added much Western Front content including maps and a/c. You had to have 'Il2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles' installed to add this to. Also some patches

4) 'Pacific Fighters' (PF) - was available as a stand alone sim, or could be merged into an FB+AEP installation and contained a/c and maps for ops in the Pacific. Series 4.xx patches introduced new FM modelling.

Later, an 'Ultimate Collection' DVD was released with the content of FB, AEP & PF all on one disc to make things easier.

5) 'PE-2' (v.4.05m) - was a payware download only addon that brought the Pe-2 and variants up to flyable condition (previously only AI). Had to be added to a combined install of FB+AEP+PF, all three needed, no other way to add.

6) IL2 Sturmovik 1946 ('46 or v 4.07m) - is everything from before, including campaigns from the very first Il2 and even the Pe-2 addon, all on one DVD, plus new content for Manchuria (USSR campaigns against Japan in the late 1930s and in 1945) plus a 'what-if' scenario involving some freaky jets and altered timelines for 1946.

One patch so far to fix some bugs v.4071m.

GET THIS! ^^^^^^^ 1946 is the one you want!

This game has a long history going back a few years..

The game was first released as IL2: Forgotten Battles. There were patches of course but as it stands now we have had 4 pay add-ons to the game. The whole series has been:

Forgotten Battles
FB + Aces Expansion Pack
FB + AEP + Pacific Fighters (PF could be installed either as an addon or a standalone game)
FB + AEP + PF + PE2 Peshka addon, and finally
IL2: 1946, an all-inclusive addon which includes all previous addons.

Of course, there have been a slew of free patches among all these addons.

The version numbers have gone from v1.0 (Forgotten Battles) to 4.071m (IL2: 1946 with the latest beta patch).

So anyway to answer your question, a lot of links on the main page still mention Pac Fighters going back to 2004 when that game/addon came out. Usually it means the same thing as FB+PF+AEP etc.. just make sure you read what you are downloading. Some patches were for Pac Fighters only and they will be noted as such.

Currently, there is only one patch for IL2: 1946 and that is 4.071m (beta patch)

Clear as mud, right?

Welcome to the forums and the wild and crazy world of IL2!! ~S~

But your better off just getting the latest version of the game 4.06. You'll go nuts trying to find all the old patches for the original game, and once you get those patches and start playing your going to become very addicted to it.Then you will want all the addons and inevitably you will be here like the rest of us with version 4.06 and needing mental help from flight sims http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

welcome aboard...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif for playing online you would be better to get

IL2: 1946, an all-inclusive addon which includes all previous addons and patches.

as most are using that on line these days http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but you will love PF which is included in the one mentioned above

Noob or no ya can't be all bad ifn ya know what a Mossie looks like. Welcome to the madness and get 1946, It's worth it (did anyone mention 230+ flyable planes- 300+ total?). I have a 7800GTX and wish I had more, but you can run this game with much less. I have a good friend that says the ATI cards have much nicer color/textures but Nvidia has more framerate/filtering power (he's run several of each). It comes down to personal preference in the end.

Cheers Bad'. yeah I know what a Mosquito looks like heehee, actually my grandad flew MkIII Beaufighters in the pacific from 1941 to 45. I have his wings he carried, totally awesome man as they all were! Times change yet we, you, all us here keep their spirit alive with this stuff.. a few of the ole boys have even taken a peak at the pc flight games and are amazed how 'real' they look. Glad you guys are here. Anyway I used to play MS flight sim euro combat heaps but miss the online stuff. Hope I see you in the e-air. Cheers.

Can someone help/??
I want to get 1946 but Im in two minds.. reason is half my control buttons are all up the wop. My brakes dont work for a start, my plane just sits there looking dumb, the throttle doesnt wok on my Logitech JS, always has with MS combat flight sim, also does pacific fighters and '46 have a float-view mode for veiwing the planes in flight? Cause thats real cool. Im guessing these games dont which is a let down abit. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif *weeps*

Yes, you can go to an external view of your plane while in flight. You can turn on autopilot and let the computer fly the mission for you. You can also go to external views of all the other planes (friendly and enemy) that are flying around.

F2 = your plane.
Shift+F2 = friendlies.
Cntrl+F2 = enemies.
F1 = cockpit view.

I think F10 is a flypast mode.
