Took these while I was at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa. First one is a collage since I was too close to do a full frontal shot. Good museum, if you're ever in Ottawa, definitely visit there.

http://www.divetheworld.com/Diving/warbirds/sunderland/Sonar%20Contact%20Sunderland%20Flying%20Boat.jpg

'In the late afternoon, one of the crew spotted the eight Ju 88s. Bombs and depth charges were dumped while Walker redlined the engines. Two Ju 88s made passes at the flying boat, one from each side, scoring hits while the Sunderland went through wild "corkscrew" evasive maneuvers. The fighters managed to knock out one engine. On the third pass of the fighters, the top-turret gunner managed to shoot one down. Another Ju 88 disabled the tail turret, but the next fighter that made a pass was bracketed by the top and nose turrets and shot down as well.

Still another fighter attacked, smashing the Sunderland's radio gear, wounding most of the crew in varying degrees and mortally wounding one of the side gunners. A Ju 88 tried to attack from the rear, but the tail turret gunner had managed to regain some control over the turret and shot down the German fighter. The surviving fighters pressed home their attacks, despite the losses. The nose gunner chewed up one of the fighters and set one of its engines on fire. Two more of the attackers were thoroughly shot up, and the other two finally decided they'd had enough and departed. Luftwaffe records indicate these were the only two that made it back to base.'

I was too busy drooling over the planes to
notice it until I got home. It looks like the 20 was removed. A recon version?

According to some sources the P-38 in question (at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center)was reportedly either a stateside trainer or a test bed aircraft and thus had no need to install/retain the 20mm cannon, it is also reported that Richard Bong flew this aircraft in testing after he returned home from the Pacific.

I see at least 2 or 3 posted pics of german Arado 234 jet bomber.I got a new book yesterday-Encyclopaedia of Aircraft of WW2/Eden/Silverdale Books(great reference)and I was surprised to read that these babies had much active service including a nine plane raid on Liege rail yard with an SC500 bomb each which was described as a total success. The plane was used for photo recce a lot too and immune to interception.I think it was used in the battle for the famous 'Bridge at Remagen'too...The allies really were taking a bit of a hammering from the axis round then werent they,we tend to forget-"Battle of the Bulge" and all that(then again that term has passed into everyday language!)I think this plane is available to fly in Firepower add on to the"game that dare not speak its name" round here(CFS3-I'll risk it!)

Partially because it looks cool and partially because my wife took it.

A few years ago I met an old guy (from Sweden) who said that he used to fly B17s. I was really impressed for a long while until I found out that they weren't flying fortresses!

I'm still quite impressed really! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Note: An aircraft that wears trousers!!(see picture).

The SAAB B17 divebomber bombed with the gear down, instead of having a separate airbraking system.
Hence the "trousers" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .

goshikisen, I use a Fuji FinePix S5000 at 3 megapixel resolution. A really good camera for the $.

By the way the close up of the engine is a Wright R 2600 from the Yankee Air Force's B25D "Yankee Warrior" The oldest flying B 25 in the world, and one that I had the honor of flying in last summer.
