I noticed in the stock campaighns for the luftwaffe fighters both Dgen and scripted there really are no DB3's etc to shoot down. I-16's laggs and yaks a plenty but no Ruskie bombers.

After reading Black Cross and Red Star I and II. I know that in the first stage the Russians sent plenty of their outdated bombers to get slaughtered by the Luftwaffe and many times unescorted!

So why did Oleg not include this common type of combat over the eastern fron in the early days?

Hmmm... I used to shoot loads of SB-s and DB-s when I played the Northern Sector stock campaign. I can remember some missions where they'd throw about a dozen unescorted bombers against our airbase, only to be completely wiped out by our squadron!

perhaps the mentioned missions were made before the DB-3s and SB-2 were available in game ?
just a guess, as IIRC they came much later - perhaps with FB release.

Thanks JG53Frankenboy. I guess that answers that. Ive played this sim since IL2 1.0 and had'nt realised that. Are you sure?

In FB without a doubt there are plenty of Russian bombers to shoot down. I don`t fly Luftwaffe, but offline i`ve had to escort heavy lumbering TB3s and Tupolevs against AI 109s who attack them with glee. And those bombers really are sad sitting ducks.

I`m pretty sure if you fly Axis you`ll find plenty of big bombers to keep you satisfied.

But if you fly only the original IL2, maybe not. Get FB, especialy 1946 with the whole thing.

Anyway DGen is not Oleg's child. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Dgen ( stock campaigns ) are easily modified as to what you encounter. Whether this is historically authentic or not is another question. Some of us don't care much.

Here's how to do it:

Open up the Dgen folder and find the DB file that is corresponds to the subcampaign you are flying or want to change. Let's say on this case, the Lvov subcampaign.

Open up the 'Lvov41.DB' file in a notepad. There is a section if you scroll down in brackets called [Planes] which looks somewhat like this:

[Planes]
32 I_153_M62
18 I_153P
12 LAGG_3SERIES4
20 SB_2M100A

The list is much longer usually but I just am making an example. Anyway, let's say you want to encounter more SB_2M100As, then just increase the number from 20 to maybe 40. Then they will be more common and you'll see a lot more of them. Works every time.

In any case, the alternative is a POS called DCG by someone who ain't no friend of Oleg.

Huh? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif The DCG is a great 3rd party addition.

Yes indeed. Lowengrin makes a good independent 3rd Party dymamic campaign generator.

I never tried it, as I was starting my own but fell into The StrikeFighters instead, and I can't get out. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So if someone suspected that there was no chance of meeting Russian bombers in campaign then they could easily look
into the files and confirm those suspicions?

Indeed, and in some cases add them to the dgen configuration so they will appear in new campaigns if they are missing. Though not always. I suspect you could not add Corsairs to a Russian map for example, though I have never actually tried it.

It also lets you cheat slightly by getting a feel for what sort of reserves the enemy has left.

Playing with the DGen scripts can be a lot of fun once you get the hang of how it works. You can set it up so that you have swarms of aircraft in the air, as long as your system can handle it.

There is a hard limit on how much you can do, though, as DGen only allows for a finite number of aircraft that can be based at an airfield during a mission. I haven't figured out how to make DGen spawn more aircraft from what would otherwise be unused airfeilds. If anyone knows the secret to this I would be eternally grateful! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

With DCG you could actually add Corsairs to a Rusian Front campaign. I find it fun for what if's. Recently flew 190's in a Japanese 44 campaign- boy the Japanese would have been much better off!

Very interesting. Would have made a lot of use of that if I'd known.
