We know Mr. Bean, all the Blackadders including Blackadder's Christmas carol, the crummy movie in which he was a secret agent (not Johnny English, but we know that one too), and we know Baldric from various movies as well as from the Young Ones (Up Scumbag!)

Personally I think Blackadder was the funniest thing Rowan Atkinson ever did but the show's hard to catch on TV and the DVD set is over a hundred dollars US

Chuck_Older, I got the complete Blackadder series plus the Back and Forth in Time movie for about $65 for Christmas. Try DeepDiscount DVD.com. It is listed for $75 with no shipping charges at the moment.

People like you really piss me off. It`s because of the feminists and you `feminists` boys who suck up to them why such a jovial, ordinary and fun loving bloke such as benny Hill got run off the airwaves and died a dissappointed and broken man.

He had nothing against women, he loved sexy ladies in an almost child-like and he got crucified for it. But he just became a magnet for the nut-feminist who had to use any paltform they had to get at men.

If Benny Hill`s a sexiest then so am I!

And while Mr. bean is funny, benny Hill is sheer FUNDOM! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I really can't stand Mr. Bean. I was trapped on a plane once and 'they' subjected the entire cabin to non stop Mr. Bean from New Delhi to the Aegean. It was excruciating...for me, everyone else seemed to having a great time. Weird that, not everyone on the planet having the same sense of humour as me.

Can't stand Bean either, funny for 10 year olds,
but Benny Hill was fantastic.
Sexest, but everybody is, including the politically correct unless there's something wrong with their equipment.
Go Benny.

There is definately a generation gap between Bean and Hill. But if you put their names together it sounds like a cigarette brand.

Bean and Hill's Fine Tobacco Cigarettes,
it could even be a subsitute for Benson And Hedges.... like Beanson and Hilldges.

Rowan Atkinson gets on your tits as "Mr. Bean" after about two or three episodes, the reason being I find him too "childish", for the lack of a better word.

Now, take Rowan Atkinson in the Black Adder series, that's much more "adult" humor, in my opinion.

By far the best English comedy I've watched so far has got to be "Only Fools and Horses".

"Aw'ight, Dave?"
"Cushty!"
"Oy, Rodders, this time next year we'll be millionaires"
"You know it makes sense"

South Park creators love British comedy and claim its the best in the world. (and hell I love South Park its one of the best things on TV right now)

Monty Python (Life of Brian especially), Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Fast Show (see the 'Heroin' sketch http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif', Father Ted, Blackadder

there are just too many to remember.

Mr Bean is something you can enjoy the first time, chuckle the second time, but sleep through the third time.

No one has mentioned "The Thin Blue Line". I like this one and have the series on dvd.

Does anyone remember "The Goodies?".

I also like "Yes Minister" (Correct title?)

I like British music and British humour. Comedy like Jim Carry or Bill Murray are just too over-the-top for me and lack comedic depth.

I guess humour, like art or decor, is a very subjective thing.

I like almost all of the shows/comedians mentioned so far.

Monty Python and Fawlty Towers are great favourites, while Rowan Atkinson, good as Mr. Bean, was truly great as Blackadder - particularly in the fourth series, set in WW1.

Steptoe & Son - great classic!

But I also like some of the perceived 'shallow' and 'immature' comedies, including 'On The Buses', 'Are You Being Served?' and yes, I also love Benny Hill.

Labelling Benny Hill as 'sexist', (and no insult intended to anyone who thinks otherwise), is really a superficial view of him both as a man and as a comedian, IMHO.

In his sketches, you will notice that the women almost always triumph over the men. The last laugh is almost always at the man's (usually Benny's) expense.

Short example:

(Benny and 'wife' in bed together, just before lights-out.)

Benny: (In sneering, superior tone), "Goodnight, mother of five!"

Wife - (In exultant glee), "Goodnight, father of one !"

The expression on Benny's face, on hearing this, is a big part of what helps to generate the laughter. He had an extremely expressive, impishly mischievous face and at least partly for this, was enormously successful on TV (after getting merely mediocre to average reviews on the stage). Television was definitely the making of him.

Of course, as I said at the beginning, humour is extremely subjective and strikes different people different ways.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Tommy Cooper yet? I loved him, too! And he died doing what he loved. Could any man ask for better?

Guess that liking all of this, together with most of what everyone else has mentioned, might make me 'shallow', 'immature' and maybe, 'sexist' - not to mention 'soft headed' 'non-discriminating' and 'easy to please'?

But if these are fair descriptions of me, then so be it! I'll happily wear that, because I unashamedly love all of those comedies.

Best regards, and don't be afraid to be proud to keep laughing at what you like - whatever your taste in comedy might be!

well, British comedy IMO: (SUPERB)

1. Benny Hill
2. Monty Python and Fawlty Towers
3. then the rest (insert any comedy show here)

BH and MP sketches/routines are copied ALL OVER the world to this day.

i.e: one illarious movie Kung Pow(sp) copied among others the routine of "the guy running towards you that seems to get farther from you"

Dad's Army - "Don't panic! Don't panic !" - Great !

It ain't 'alf hot mum ! - Bloody mahvelous !

Not the nine o'clock news - "And would you like to rub my tits too ?" - Very funny, and the songs !! Kinda lingers ??

What about Jasper Carrot - "Boing ! Time for bed said Zebedee !!"

Get some in ... anyone remember that one ?

Cripes ... way too many to remember !

In Norway we love the british humour, and one I really like thats not been mentioned yet is "Harry Anfield and choms" (+- spelling)

From US South Park and Simpsons is first class no doubt.

Absolutely Fabulous is a hoot !
The sexism debate about Benny Hill is pointless as this is not the biggest problem with the show - it is simply not funny IMO.

The great thing about Atkinson is that he relies only on visual gags, which really makes him universal.

And anything with John Cleese in makes my sides split.

Yes, I know Mr. Bean. He used to come on public television all the time. What's the name of that funny looking car he would drive sometimes?

Anyways, his show was really funny and I miss it alot. Is it being sold on dvd?

And what about the "Carry on" series? Has anyone mentioned those?

Here´s one for Brems,...."Dinner for One". I have never seen it but so far all the Germans who have mentioned it, love it. It´s played at every Christmas in Germany.

Benny Hill's show was high brow and low brow- he had stupid physical comedy, pop culture satire, and sophisticate play on word sketches in the same show. Not Funny? Some folks need to loosen their bow ties once in a while

Not only was he in the Engineers in WWII, he had the thing that comedians want to have- the classic rubber Johnny face. Err...the classic rubber face, Johnny! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
