most of you probably know this already but for the few who dont...

if your gettin troubled by netsend (messenger) pop ups do this:

go to; start / settings / control panel / administration tools / services

you should now see a list of all the services... scroll down and find messenger. right click on messenger and select properties. select "manual" from the dropdown box in the middle and then click the "stop" button below it.
hit ok and youll never be troubled by them again...

i posted this because id heard people where actually downloading programs that do this simple task and in some cases even paying for it

If you've ever had one of these irritating pop-up messages ruin your online game, then you know this is a relevant topic and the poster was kind enough to help those who didn't know how to shut them off. What is this obsession with being so judgemental of other's posts? Are you a wannabe forum moderator?

I heard the best way to stop the popups was to record the sound of a shotgun being loaded and cocked, and then send it back to the person who sent you the popup.

Any comments, Commie? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I´m with The Fan on this one - once hosted a game & a friend started sending me stuff on Messenger -> game crashed & a lot of people got kinda disapointed...
I´ve turned it off & only switch it on when I use it.

Dunno if a simple shotgun is the first choice in this case.

You guys have to be aware of further tagets "popping-up"!

the pop ups im refering to are the netsend type (not MSN messenger) normally used by network admins but now being exploited by smutty sites to advertise their wares.

Just ignore them Franta. Some people must have nothing better to do. I learned how to stop these popups a couple months ago on a different forum. Everytime one of those messages occurred on my screen, it would minimize my game and I couldn't get back. Microsoft did a great job of burrying the settings so it's not easy to find. Good tip and I'm sure it will help someone.

I'm with you Franta. This entire forum is being hijacked by self-appointed censors. The worst offenders are those who think that The Pilot's Lounge will need to be reopened if they derail enough threads. Your post was entirely on-topic; one of the few I've seen recently, as a matter of fact.

yup, can get pretty sad at times. wonder if a complete newcomer would feel comfortable posting?

btw what does IBTL mean?

Good post, there are peoples that need this. Many of those anoing messages come because of spyware, and helps a lot to have those cleaned on the regular basis..

Newcommers usually get hammered for asking a question that may have already been asked 5 months ago or something, and they didn't do a thorough enough search to find it. I'm sure that makes them feel right at home. IBTL (in before the lock). When someone feels your post is not worthy of the forum, they assume a moderator will be locking it and they find great joy in getting a post in before the lock occurs. Never understood the thrill in it, but to each their own I suppose.

In which OS is this option?

In my 98SE I can`t find it.

Could you explain more clearly how to disable popups?

You don't get netmessage popups in 98, carguy - they're talking about Windows XP.

I've never gotten these popups on my Win 98SE machine. They only occurred on my Win XP machine. So I assumed they were related to XP. If you are getting them in 98SE, I don't know how to disable them in that OS.

I am glad you used the "usually" part because I for one do not mind repeating answers to the many questions that get asked over and over again.

I also know that there are many other old timers in here who also do not hammer newcomers and are more than happy to repeat the answer to questions that get asked all the time/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

its not a messenger program in the same way that msn or yahoo is. its a windows xp service that runs in the background. its meant for network admins or something i think... anyway porn sites have cottoned onto this and are sending out popups that jump up in windows dialogue boxes, its very very annoying.
