Hey all,

My trusty old ATI 9700 AIW Pro gave up the ghost on me last month. I didn't want to invest in another AGP card because I was thinking of upgrading soon.

So I took the plunge and decided to upgrade a little sooner. I got a brand new system built around a Nvidia 6800GT. It's actually a SLI system (*BUT* I'm only running one card at the moment). My thought was that in a year or two, when I maybe wanted to upgrade again, I could just upgrade the proc to a dual core (yes the mobo supports it) add more RAM and another 6800GT. Which by then will rpobably be very cheap.

OK so here's the problem. I HATE THE IMAGE QUALITY in the game. It's GOT to be some settings that I'm missing. There's no way that my old tired nag of a 9700 AIW looked *THIS* much better!

Admitedly I fiddled around alot with the settings on the 9700 to get them where I wanted them, but YIKES!

There seem to be many pages and links to optimum settings for ATI but dang if I can find some for the newer NVidia stuff. I've tried doing searches but most of the chit chat is about SLI.... I'm just looking for settings to make the game look good!

Here is some info on my rig

AMD64 +4000
1 Gb RAM (2x512 Corsair in dual chanel)
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe
EVGA 6800GT 256 w/ 71.89 drivers
DX 9.0c

Thanks in Advance All!

I use to do all the settings for ATI and NV....but frankly it got too costly for me to constantly buy NV cards I was not using to test and come up with settings. When I have availability to them I test and play with settings. That hasn't happened lately though been too busy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

How bad is it? Just curious as I have a 9700Pro right now.

what is 'bad' about the image quality? I got a 6800 vanilla, and theres nothing wrong with mine (i hade a 9600xt before too).

Is it related to aliasing, washed out colours, bad mipmaps (ie not proper aniso) or rendering errors? Some more info to work off!

when I changed from ati to nvidia the colours seemed more bright and clean, turning down the gamma and brightness a touch improved it for me so you could try adjusting these to suit yourself.

good luck

Alot of the guys are still using my older TI series settings on airwarfare.

Also in the community help section in the Patch settings thread I used a 6800 Ultra to get some of the settings quickly.

==UPDATE==

Just thought I'd post this back in case it would help someone else....

My problems were casued by something so obvious it hurts.

Just to recap, I had changed Graphics cards from ATI to Nvidia (EVGA 6800 GT), otherwise all else remained the same. I was very unhappy with the quality of what I was seeing in game compared to my old tired ATI 9700 AIW Pro.

Come to find out that *somehow* my conf.ini got set back to usehardewareshaders=0 under the OGL portion of the file. I have no idea how this happened.... The only thing I can think of is that when I first set up IL2 with the new card I ran IL2setup to pick the 6800 series family.

Anyhow.... Once I set usehardewareshaders=1 (as it should have been from the beggining) all is good.

I am curious though.... with it set to usehardewareshaders=0 are you basically *not* using hardware acceleration? Which would mean that the rendering is being done with software (read, thru the CPU!?!?). If thats the case then it's a fine testament to the power of the AMD64 proc, because I didn't notice a huge slowdown just a crappy looking pic!

Anyway salute all!

I like both the ATI and Nvidia cards, but the Digital Vibrance setting of the Nvidia cards really brings FB to life. I use medium digital vibrance. Give it a try. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Wher do I find it? Do I need a special program to get at it like Rivatuner?

Thaks in advance

I'm shopping around and thinking of making a switch too. I have a 9600 XT now but thinking of getting a 6600 GT. Good upgrade for PF merged (for a mid-priced card ) ? Meaning will I be able to take advantage of water=3 and Typeclouds=1 smoothly ?

Capt._Tenneal, I`d go for a 6800GT 256meg if you can push to that. Got one on Saturday and I`ve just managed to get a playable game with water=3 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

@ Loki-PF

The digital vibrance is part of the Nvidia software driver. Check your Control Panel>Display settings>Advamced> Card type> and it`s in colour correction.

depending on your budget I'd get the 6800 GT. We're running some blow out stuff also on the GT's

I am very happy with my 6800GT visually. I run "Perfect" online and Water = 1, and have very high frame rates.
