Here is a question that was probably asked before but I am curious about the "stinger" MG17 machine gun in the tail cone of the He 111H-6. It is there in the external model and it is supposed to be there but I have never seen it firing.

Can I assume the functionality was never modelled in the sim ? ie. it won't fire and it is there stricly for show ? If not modelled, why ?

Thanks,

Jagd

Oh he shoots, all right. A lot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. But you probably wont see him shoot at you at close range. You need to be on some distance and straight at his six.. that's what makes *him* angry. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's a MG15 BTW. The MG-17 is the red one.

Who fired that thing in real life? Doesn't look like a person could fit back there.

There is no gunner there. The weapon was fixed to fire directly back.

It is triggerd from one of the other positions.

I hear about Coastal Command Beaufighters (or anti-shipping Beaufighters) which had rear-firing Lewis guns with all-incendenary ammunition in the back of the engine nacelles. When diving on a ship, the gunner/navigator would fire these guns to scare attacking Zeros, just long enough to fire at the ship.

S! All

It rarely fires and is not human controlable.

should be 20mm fixed rear firing in H6

That looks like an MG15 to me.

Do 217E/K/M had 2 MG81Z 7.92mm fixed machine guns (4 barrels total) in the tail with periscope visor on the roof of the cockpit for the pilot to sight and fire. Too bad the Do 217 got abbandonned.

Some Do 217s were tested with 3 X MG81Z (6 barrels) in the tail and some other with additional 1 X MG81Z fixed as well in the rear of each of the engine nacelles. That could have meant 8 to 10 7.92mm machine guns spraying bullets towards the rear of the aircraft!

Was that gun linked to fire with another or was there a separate trigger somewhere?

as far as i know, the He111's tailcone MG was remotely operated by the topgunner.

perhaps it even had dual controls, so the bellygunner could also operate it, but this seems a bit odd as the bellygunner had not a great view slightly upwards.
The topgunner had by far the best view to operate it.

If it was either an Mg15 or Mg17 i don't know, maybe it varied amongst different planes.

Yup my bad, its a Mg17 used in IL2

Although there were many variants on He111's including the dual Mg positions on the gondola.

The one in the pic is probaly Mg17
