After reading in a certain now-locked thread over in PF some advice on what to aim for on a sub, I wondered does the term 'sail' correspond to 'conning tower'? I guess it's a US/UK linguistic thing?

Yep, the sail is the conning tower. Haven't heard 'sail'used in a logn time, but it's an acceptable (if possibly obsolete) term.
