View Full Version : 4.09 certain sounds are garbage

I have a problem with the sounds in 4.09 which cause me to never use it. In particular when you get hit by a bullet it makes the same 3 part sound of the bullet bouncing around in you fuselage. This is extremely unrealistic to me as such a complex sound would never be duplicated every time you took a hit. Who decided to use it I think they were not thinking clearly. Is there a way to revert back to the more basic and realistic sound from 4.08 at least for that particular sound. I don't know if there are any other ridiculous sounds in 4.09 as I couldn't get over this glaring annoyance long enough to play even one mission. From what I can tell though most of the other sounds are pretty good for instance the new mg sounds are nicer then 4.08.

I think you are speaking of mods, because 4.09 and 4.08 have the same sounds.

The problem with most gaming sounds is that they usually rely on a limited number of triggers that tell which sounds to be heard. So in some cases you can get a really bad canned effect, especially if there is only one trigger as is the case for some of the hit/impact sounds. The game actually distinguishes between cannon and MG impacts, which is a great effect with the proper sound mod. You can check AAA for my Air Impact Sound mod. You can clearly tell when you are being hit by cannons or machine guns. I managed to also get them to sound less canned.

Yeah you are probably talking about the sound mods that came with the AAA unified installer. I used to have AAA and I would get annoyed at the loud "pink-pank-ponk" sound from any hits, it sounded like two pieces of wood knocking together and would always sound exactly the same no matter what.

Get UP, the sound mods aren't as annoying, also you can use default sounds.

Well, I hate the sound when pulling G's. The high AOA air rush sound was replaced with something that reminds me of opening and closing a rusty old wooden door repeatedly.

Then the machine guns, e.g., 50 cal, sound on my system like Star Wars laser shots

The error in the Zero's sound was the final nail in the coffin, I am back to the boring, but reliable stock sounds even when on mods otherwise.

How ironic, considering that everything started as a sound mod....

I know exactly what sound you are speaking of. I always think of an old sail boat creaking.

I was able to mod it back while keeping the other new sounds. If interested i can send it to you.

If you really need very realistic and good aircraft sounds and have a top notch computer to run it. Battle of Britain wings of Victory is your best bet. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Il-2 does a lot of of things better but for some excellent flight models of the 109 spit and Hurricane and really great aircraft sounds it can't be beat.

I believe it is a very good prelude till SOW comes out.

I believe were all waiting for that.

OK, I am obviously totally in the dark over here. Is that the version switcher in your post or is that something else. I have a version switcher but it don't look like that.

delete these two files from your modded install to revert to stock sounds:
bullet hit: exp2_54_1.wav, flak hit: exp3_11.wav

The FW Antons also sound like WW1 planes in UP http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah I remember that sound, it was awful.. I ended up extracting all the sound effects from Janes WWII fighters and replaced it with one of those.. Some other great sound effects in that old sim that are worth shovin' into IL-2 as well.

It has a lot of options, because the creators HSFX try hard to bridge the gaps between the various mod versions and also between the modded-stock users. This pack is really good to attemtp to reconcile a fragmented community.

The standard became "modded", and you need a mod to fly the vanilla version. The guys could have even called it "Oleg Maddox mod 4.09" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif or "Oleg & TD mod 4.10" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've used this before on Silent Hunter 3 but didn't realize it worked with IL-2. Does this only work with specific Ubi titles or is it even more encompassing?

The modded tempest sound is unbearable... I eventually replaced it with the P40's allison. It's surprising it hasn't already been fixed, because I've never heard anyone say that they prefer it.

I did try to 'fix' the tempest's noise a while ago, using different samples and a sound editor or two, but didn't get anywhere - I just couldn't get rid of the whooshing/humming.

The modded damaged engine squeak is just weird - i would have thought that it could be done better, given how many videos of engines being killed (no oil, rocks dropped in, etc) there are on the web, so not much imagination required.

IMO there are some good modded sounds, but in general I didn't have much of a problem with the originals (except perhaps the gun sounds), so I prefer Oleg's after all.
