"T72:Fire on the Balkans" is a tank simulation being released sometime very soon. There is demo available.

The full version looks very promising. They have a lot of tactics and specialities implemented, as well as a deformable landscape. It was shown in a demo-video, how a tank dug itself a hull-down-position, for example. Buildings, trees and stuff can be rammed to pieces, too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Looking forward to the full.

Try www.3dgamers.com (http://www.3dgamers.com) - I downloaded the demo there.

I believe the most accurate and interactive tank simulation is WWII Online and its virtual battlefield of thousands of players. WWIIOL is largely built around combined forces tactics, and around armor/infantry specifically.

Yep, Steel Beasts is the most accurate hands-down. The new Pro edition is a military training tool, in use by several nations. A private license is available for $125. You can't crew any of the Russian tanks at the moment, but there's a possibility of that changing in the future.

I was reading a post concerning the price of Steel Beasts PE.
It's $125.00 US. Many posters feel that it's too much and that will limit sales. (I agree to limiting sales, but they aren't trying to market to everyone)

How much were flight sims six, seven, eight years ago? How much are they now? I feel pretty confident that the price for flight sims hasn't gone up a whole lot, if at all. The COST of making a flight sim (or for the sake of this post - tank sims) has gone up considerably.

For what Steel Beasts PE is offering...and the market they are trying to reach I don't feel $125.00 is unreasonable.

Looking in that perspective it's a wonder 1C/Maddox Games/UBI are still selling $40.00 sims to a highly niche market.

Are we living in the same Australia? I've been seeing 'T-72 Balkans On Fire' on the shelf at EB Games for several weeks now. But I'm being a smart-arse here, 'cos I guess it wasn't available when you were looking for it! Hehehehehehehe.....

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif

And no, I haven't bought it yet.... have read mixed reviews.... is it really good?

panther3485
03-25-2006, 10:54 PM
No, MadRuski....

I'm definitely not kidding you and as for the price, I seem to recall it was either $79.95...or, if not, definitely no more than $89.95.

It's been on the 'New Release' stand for several weeks now. I live in a suburb of Perth but regularly visit 4 different branches of EB games in the metro area. All 4 still had it when I looked yesterday (Saturday 25 March).

Yes, for a genuine legal copy of a new PC game, that's a bargain in anyone's language.

My experience is, that if I wait about 2-3 months, the local price will drop. I predict that I will be able to walk into EB games before the end of June and buy it for A$49.95 or less..... by which time, of course, you will have had a few months worth of fun out of it and I'll be just starting out!

Now, when a game developer can intergrate a fight sim and a tank sim, where the tank commander can call out coordinates in real rime in a coop to the flight leader of a flight that is covering them and protecting them, now that would be a simulation to have. Just think, at the load up screen you can choose either a tank position or an ac pilot position, both with completely different objectives\missions yet both intergrated into one mission, ground movement and flight interception. I know I am dreaming here, but that be a hoot!

T-72 is available in Australia. I saw it in the local EB the other day. Mind you, after comparing the models to Kenji-sans 3d work that he posted a while back, I thought it looked a bit poor.

Bear in mind that T-72 is a resource heavy sim/game due to all the visual goodness within. It really needs at least a 3Ghz machine with 1-2 Gigs of RAM and at least a nvidia 6600GT 128mb or preferably a much faster graphics card. Anything lower than that and you will need to start turning the graphics settings down to get a good frame rate.

Steel Beasts Pro PE is the sim to get if you want total realism and some 3d interiors, but its expensive.

WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs. Tiger.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IDDK ( www.games.iddk.ru (http://www.games.iddk.ru) ) and G5 Software ( www.g5software.com (http://www.g5software.com) ) announce a new tank simulation to be set during the Second World War.

€œWWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs. Tiger€ tells the story of the great triumph of the Soviet Army during the summer campaign of 1944. The Soviet Army had won the battle near Kursk, and since that day, German tank forces were retreating. €œOperation Bagration€ in 1944 was one of the most significant Russian campaigns during the struggle of Soviet and German tanks in Belorussia.

The player will be able to experience €œOperation Bagration€ in two playable campaigns €" a Russian campaign and a German campaign, where he can take control over the Russian T-34 or, respectively, the German Tiger.

The player will be fighting in realistic locations, modeled after the Belorussian landscape of the early 20th century, recreated from hundreds of reference photos and maps. Additionally, the game will feature a realistic combat environment, including infantry, cars, armored personnel-carriers, motorcycles, artillery, aircraft.

The most detailed technical documents available were used to model realistic physics and tank behavior. To model realistic tank movements, the propulsion systems, transmissions and gear-ratios, tank masses, friction and suspensions were taken into consideration. For a realistic gunnery model, the mass of the shell, gravity, and the initial speed of the various ammunition types, as well as the various gunner's sights available, were taken into consideration.

Realistic effects, such as explosions, smoke, destruction of vehicles and buildings are modeled. Tanks (and other objects) can be shot or rammed, displaying different levels of damage. The player can observe the battlefield from both realistically modeled 3D or virtual stations, as well as from third person views and various camera angles.

The latest 3D engine technology allows for stunning graphics effects, such as dynamic shadows, self shading, bump mapping, specular maps, glow and bloom effects. New technologies used make it possible to stretch the map-size to over 40 square kilometers and set up thousands of trees of the highest level of detail.

Key features:

€ Storyline based on the Soviet Army €œBagration€ operation in Belorussia in 1944;
€ Large scale of available missions;
€ Realistic handling and physics;
€ Realistic locations depicting Belorussian landscape of the early 20th century;
€ Detailed animation of weapons, vehicles and infantry
€ Realistic combat environments of that time period, including infantry, cars, armored cars, motorcycles, artillery, aircraft, armored troop-carriers;
€ Playable, detailed 3D crew stations for commander, driver and gunner;
€ Non-Linear Mission Structure;
€ Various external Views;
€ Realistic effects: explosions, smoke, destroyable units;
€ Both Internet and LAN Multiplayer Options;

€œWWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs. Tiger€ is scheduled for release in Q1 of 2007 in Russia.

Actually mate, you'd have to have a naval factor as an option as well. Driving your MTB with your flotilla and you call up Coastal Command for some air support. And in comes Quazi in his Wellington http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hi there, RommelsMind

The 'WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs. Tiger' sim sounds as if it will be good.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

But...question: Is it only the Tiger we'll be able to take against the T-34? Is it only the T-34 we'll be able to take against the Tiger? Hardly an even match, I would have thought.

Have to disagree with you here MadRuski, The T34/76 waa a revolutionary tank design. The sloped armour, wide track chassis, mobility & 76mm cannon made it a superior tank to anything the German Army had up until 1942. The German Army then took a PanzerIV & placed a long barrelled 75mm gun in the turret, up until this point I consider the T34/76 to be the most advanced tank in the world. In late 1942 the TigerI started active service & so the nightmare for Allied troops began. This tank had 100mm thick frontal armour & an 88mm cannon. The Tiger was a heavy tank & was in a class of its own, it did not have the mobility of the T34 but made up for it in the armour & firepower dept. In my opinion only when the IS2 & the T34/85 was developed did a soviet equal to the TigerI & the Panther occur. The brilliant thing about the T34 was also its ability to be mass produced, & this is how in my opinion the Soviets pushed to the brink by the Nazi`s rolled up the Eastern front from late 1942 to 1945. Again this is only my opinion

Yup agree with dasreich, plus both the Soviets and Germans used SP guns like the Stugs, Ferdinands and Jadgpanthers and the SU-85, Su-122, SU-152 series to hunt tanks. The western allies open topped tank destroyers were pathetic in comparison.

Anyway, my understanding from the announcement at simhq is the Tiger and T-34 (not sure which models) will be the only drivables at first....but there will be expansion packs for other tanks and possibly theatres.

lets just say that the T-34/76 and T-34/85 both kicked a$$..... not forgeting about the German great enginering and design, so lets just leave in the past wat our crazy grand-daddys made!
