Hello, with the original version of IL-2 you can fly the stuka with version 1.2

You can get version 1.2 of IL-2 here:
http://www.il2sturmovik.com/games_elts/updates.php

What made the stuka scream in the dive was a special siren called the trumpet of jericho.

The dive siren could be activated at the switch of a button if I recall correctly. So the stuka could dive on a target and not have it on, theoretically.

This siren must have been horrifying for inexperienced soldiers, but I guess, to experienced and battlehardened men it would only alert them to shot at the Stuka?

i think even experienced men would rather take cover when they hear that scaring sound over them. shooting with small calibres or even light flak wont get a "experienced and battlehardened" stukapilot off his target, and when the stuka is diving, you will hardly hit it, and even if you hit, guess where the wrecked plane will come down... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

and yes the siren had to be switched on by the pilot.
AFAIK there was no real siren. it were the small props attached to the landinggear which made this noise when getting high on RPM. if im wrong, these props at least have driven the siren.

The props drive the sirens which are similar to air warning sirens.
