In the object placement idea post there are dozens of great ideas. Some of us either dont have the time or the patience to do some of the high quality stuff that I have seen in that thread. Would some of you consider making those maps available as templates? If so then perhaps we could try to find a site willing to host the templates..... I can see a whole evolution of the genre if we had a place to start that was already rife with ideas.. like some of the great templates I have seen here. How about it guys?

BTW... if any of you artists read this and say to yourselves... No problem.... then please send some of them to the email addy in my sig. I have started building missions again for our squad... and some of the more detailed desert things I have seen have been awesome... I just dont have the time to do all the detailed work. If I use any of your work I will make sure I give credit where it is due.

So how about it guys....?

Hi Bear:

Some guys have d/l whole maps at Flying Legends--or should I say at least one did--it is the Crimea map with all of the bases populated. I will be sharing a Rabaul template soon in a missions pack I'll be uploading, but certainly would be willing to share on any site that results from your idea. Also, I'm using the Groupcloner utility for the certain specialized airbases and other one-off things like fancy gun emplacements, sub pens, etc., (find it here: http://www.flygflottilj16.se/news.php?item.64). I don't know how many people know about it or are using it, though.

TY hopefully some of the people who made some of those great maps in the above mentioned thread will be willing to share thier work and spread the joy. You see the difference between this sim and other sims is that we dont have access to alot of the files that they do in CFS and other sims. What we do have access to is the mission builder and the skins. When I think of all the great 3rd party mods many of which are free for other sims and are shared amongst the community and the type of stuff that we can do here, in many ways we are limited. I for one however am greatful that we cannot alter the FMs and DMs in this sim. If we used what we do have access to with the same gusto that many 3rd party modders do in other sims it would go a long long way to taking this sim even farther than it is now. The bottom line is that in @ a year or two BoB will be out and I have no doubt that it will be great to the sim community and a lot of us will be on it from day one. In the meantime though we have what we have.... and it is an awesome product.... sure... we cant do mods.... newbs come in here all the time...."Where are the mods...?""How can I mod this or that....? " etc etc etc... if we took what we had at our disposal.. and ran with it we could blow this sim up even more than it is. So lets do it.

Just my two cents.

I've got a few D/F Maps up at FL, plus I've still got the Template for Cats Eyes, 262 Campaign, plus quite a few more Maps which I use for my Squad which I've never posted anywhere.

All the D/F Maps could with ease be made into Templates.

hm, no more entusiasts here? Imagine we have a database with hundreds of templates, I'm dreaming http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Hey Bearcat, even though the mission/campaign builders logically would be the ones to provide templates, and they would logically be reading this thread in this forum, the world is an illogical place, so why not move this to the General Discussion forum?

the thing is many people around are building nice stuff, only they don't publish (shyness or whatever), so good idea Saunders (was brooding too), dream has more chance to take off http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I can most certanly have a go at some maps, just shout what you want and I will try to make them. I still have to tidy a few other simming loose-ends up (a little guide to ground battles in Il2, but after that, I am 'free'.

So any ideas on what to start with? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Stalingrad sounds good http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In this case it means a map with all of the static objects (buildings, etc.) already placed, so the mission builders don't have to go to the trouble of populating bases and such when designing a mission.

So what is the difference between a custom made map and a template

From a previous post "All the D/F Maps could with ease be made into Templates."

Is there a conversion process?

There are many posibilities.
Template= whole map with several airfields, harbours, camps populated
Template= a single airfield populated on certain map (variation: single harbour etc)

Example:
Crimea_template_full.miss :all airfields populated some red and some blue

Crimea_template_blank: not populated by blue or red, but added objects (houses, dockyards, baracks, fortifications, trees etc) to make the map look better and more realistic.

Crimea_airfield1_red.miss : airfield 1 is red populated

Crimea_airifeld1_blue.miss : same airfield is now blue populated

Crimea_airifeld1_blank: same airfield not populated by blue or red, but added objects (baracks, fortifications, trees etc) to make it look better.

All variations possible with harbours, camps, even TOWNS

It's easy then to combine different templates in the final mission, by manual copy-paste or using some utilities developed for that purpose.

Two options here;

1. Copy and paste via notepad. Drawback: You must use the same map. Useful if you want to make a Summer and Winter variation if map has both versions.

2. Use GroupCloner (http://www.flygflottilj16.se/news.php?item.64). Drawback: you have to make the objects.

Nothing is impossible with a little work.

I was just asked by fly_zo to post his Peral Harbour templates at Flying Legends (and will do so as soon as they are up). I have a heap of very nice single airfields I have made for my personal pleasure, perhaps I could upload them as well.

I made a template for dday with the bunkers. That does make it easy to create mission. you dont have to deal with static objects everytime you use the mission builder. I would like to the bar on the side increased in size.

I think I can contribute with airfields on almost all the maps. In addition some (I hope) improved scenery:
Stalingrad city
Sevastopol city (Crimea)
Naha city (Okinawa)
Carentain (Normandie)
Hedgerows in Normandie http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
A couple of harbours.

~S~ Gents,
Id like to contribute something to this post in the way of a website! i have recently bought space for starting an iL2 campaign but now due to work do not have time to go through with it, i have made iL2 missions since i began about a year back but i have held myself in the background and not widely shared my mission.

Id love to supply you and the iL2 community with a website that would hold a database like iL2Skins held, the site could be the largest resource of iL2 missions on the web if we all work together to submit as many missions as we produce to the site, the web package i have holds 20GB of storage so that could hold a LOT of missions http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif The site could host both FINAL custom missions and also the proposed mission templates as well as custom mission skins if supplied.

If you would like to talk more on this please respond and ill get cracking so we can start it. Thankyou.

Hi guys,
Ive been parked at the sharp end of IL2-PF at the VAAF (vaaf.com) since we started, in that time I have built several folders full of missions, most of witch will be no good to you, however, I have reasently discovered filling out maps first is a great way to make a stack of coop/single player missions. So I guess as far as templates go I prolly have some to offer, think of it as a sort of a South Pacific flavour. Times the big thing, but Ill try and post some away if there needed.

That's a great offer, Viper. I have a lot of mission--hundreds easily--that I put together (or modifed from other sources, mostly campaigns) that I use for my own fun. They are in no way made for public consumption, although I keep telling myself I'll do more "Quick Pack Attacks" quick missions, because they have minimal or no briefings, mission accomplished triggers, etc. I'm sure we all do--Woody's a good example. Maybe the website could have a place for those "Not for Public Consumption" type of missions--that way, we would all have a large base of missions from which to make our own edits and finish them off as we like.

This is a crucial idea, if you're asking only on highly polished/finished templates, the database will not grow fast enough to be really useful to community. We need hundreds or templates, finished or not, realistic or fantasy. If this is achieved I'm reckoning on an exponential growth of community missions, dogfight maps, COOPS.

Very interesting project http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I just begining serious work in detail on some map, and a dedicate web site could be a very nice place to speak about object, map and other stuff around the map.

Here my first detailled map, made to rebuilt the Blitzkrieg in Belgium, using the Ardennes map.

Man, those towns are nice, Tchaika! I have a question about the airfield, did they really have all those buildings so close to the runway? It seems horribly dangerous to me.

Just tried your template, Tchaika. Brilliant. The detail is excellent. I love those airbases full of planes on the tarmac, with fuel trucks and all the expected attrezo around them.

@Friendly_flyer
Yep, they're close, aren't they? That's precisely what makes it fun. But there's still plenty of space to land http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Actually I just posted something over at airwarfare that might be what your looking for.
one thing is for sure, I found if you do create a map with a lot of staic objects it can really kill your frames.Thats why I use DogFight maps with limited preloaded objects ,that way you can load up on the visuls your trying to create and not compromise frames for anyone.
