Ok July 20 has passed already but it took me some time to translate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Bundeswehr website has published a article regarding the happenings of July 20, 1944 , the attempted assasination of Adolf Hitler by the resistance movement in the german military.

Ive translated the article into english and here it is. Its a long read but i think its worth it.

Hope you like it and ive made not too much grammatical mistakes. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

------------------------------------------------

Berlin ,July 20 1944 , shortly after 06:00 AM

Oberst Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg drives from his house in Berlin to the airfield Rangsdorf. From there he flyes together with his adjutant Oberstleutnant Werner von Heaften to the Führer-headquarters "Wolfschanze" in Rastenburg ,East-Prussia.

10:15 AM , airfield at the Führerheadquarters "Wolfschanze"

Stauffenberg and Heaften drive over to the Führer headquarters.

Between 11:30 and 12:00 at the "Wolfsschanze"

Stauffenberg reports to the chief of the highcommand of the Wehrmacht, Generalfieldmarshall Wilhelm Keitel.

12:30 , Berlin, Bendlerblock

At the command center of the conspiracy , several people arrive :

- Hauptmann Ulrich-Wilhelm Graf Schwerin von Schwanenfeld

- Generaloberst Erich Hoepner

- Police vice president Fritz-Dietlof Graf von der Schulenburg

- High governmental councelor Peter Graf Yorck von Wartenburg

- Eugen Gerstenmaier

- High judge of the marine staff Berthold Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (some people would call him Kriegsmarine Judge Advocate General http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

12:30 "Wolfsschanze"

Claiming to want to refresh themselves and take on some fresh shirts before they would join the situation report in Hitler´s war room , Stauffenberg and Haeften go into the room of Major Ernst John von Freyend (Keitels Adjutant) who offers them its use.

There, Stauffenberg squeezes with a plier and great problems (remember he only had one hand) the acid timer fuse and inserts it into the one-kilogram package of explosives which he then puts into his document bag.

During repeat of the procedure with the second pack of explosives, Stauffenberg and Haften get disturbed by Oberfeldwebel Werner Vogel who nearly enters the room to remind them to hurry as the report will soon begin.

Stauffenberg barely intercepts Vogel at the door and tells him that they will come in a minute. After that both decide that they have to go now and make the fatal decision that one kilo of explosives has to be enough.

Haeften takes the other package with him back to the car. Stauffenberg walks the 400 meters over to the war room barracks on foot.

Stauffenberg is supposed to inform Hitler about a plan for setting up reserve units. He tells one of the adjutants that he has problems with his ears since his front injury and asks him to place him as near to Hitler as possible so that he would not miss anything.

He enters the war room in which the situation report has already begun a few minutes ago and is introduced to Hitler. Hitler shakes his hand and immidiatly turns back to the great map table to continue the front situation briefing that Keitel just gives to him.

Stauffenberg places his document bag under the table right next to Hitler and whispers to the Adjutant that he forgot an important phonecall which he has to make now.

12:40 "Wolfsschanze"

Stauffenberg leaves the war room and walks over to the telephone barracks commanded by the Wehrmacht recon officer Oberstleutnant Ludolf Gerhard Sander and meets General Erich Fellgiebel and Werner von Heaften there.

12:42 "Wolfsschanze"

The bomb explodes. A loud bang shatters through the base. 5 of the 24 people in the war room get killed instantly, the others get injured. Hitler receives only some scratches and burnings on his leg and hands.

Fellgiebel tells Stauffenberg and Haeften that they dont need to worry. "Propably a wild boar that walked into the minefield" "Happens often here" and "From time to time one of the mines goes up when the weather is changing..."

The alarm bell and sirens start ringing.

Stauffenberg fakes a short phonecall and tells Fellgiebel that he and Haeften have to go due to an important meeting in Berlin.

Both get into the car and order the driver to bring them back to the airfield immidiatly.

Shortly before 01:00 PM "Wolfsschanze"

As the car proceeds along the main street it passes the just exploded barracks. Medics and the base-own firefighters are helping the in blood covered coughing victims of the explosion, dragging them out of the rubble. Stauffenberg sees a dead body covered by Hitler's personal overcoat. Now he is convinced that Hitler is dead.

The car gets stopped at the inner security perimeter. The guards inform Stauffenberg that alert has been given and that they cant let anyone in or out at the moment.

Stauffenberg orders the guards to let them through due to an important order by the Führer that requiers them to depart to Berlin without any delay.

The guards let the car pass.

5 Minutes later : The car is stopped again at the outer security perimeter. The guard commander refuses to let the car pass and tells Stauffenberg that the only way to get the permission is to phone the base first.

Stauffenberg (who believes that his days are numbered now) phones the base and recognizes with great relief the voice of one of the into the conspiracy involved people on the other side. "Yes they wont let me go" "Please order the guard commander to let me trough, the important orders of the Führer do not allow any delay"

The guard commander lets the car pass. Meanwhile Fellgiebel order a complete intelligence lockdown over the entire Wolfsschanze. All telephones are switched off. No word of the just happened bomb explosion shall leave the base or reach the media. But he has no command over the SS telephone lines. Shortly after 13:00 Goebbels recieves knowledge of the bomb blast via a still working SS telephone line.

01:15 PM airfield at the Wolfsschanze

Stauffenberg and Heaften depart to Berlin

02:00 PM Bendlerblock Berlin

Oberst Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim alerts the "Walküre" (Valkery) troops on his own initiative.
These are a tanktroop academy in Krampnitz and a infantry academy in Döberitz.

The cadets who get informed that Hitler is dead are mobilizing and arming themselves.

Walküre is a secret emergency plan for the case of a total breakdown of the govermental chain of command (expected to be caused by the enemy) which the conspirators want to use for their own goals to topple the Nazi goverment. (Very complex stuff)

The cadets of the schools are supposed to stand ready to occupy and protect governmental institutions and to strike down any possible coup d'etat attempts.

The conspirators plan is to use them to gain the governmental authority by telling them that Hitler was assasinated by the SS in a coup d'etat organized by Heinrich Himmler. (Very clever idea by the way)

Between 02:45 and 03:15 PM , Berlin

Stauffenberg and Haeften land in Rangsdorf in the near of Berlin. Haften uses the airfields telephone to ring the conspirators in the Bendlerstreet and informs them that Hitler is dead.

Between 03:50 and 04:00 PM Bendlerblock Berlin

Now finally, much too late, the still hesitant General Olbricht initiatites the alert measures of plan "Walküre" by giving the codeword "Deutschland" to the cadets of the academies.

04:00 PM "Wolfschanze"

The (because of the SS phones) anyway useless intelligence lockdown ordered by Fellgiebel gets deactivated.

Between 04:30 and 05:00 PM , Bendlerblock Berlin

Now finally Stauffenberg and Haeften arrive at the Bendelstreet after having problems with heavy traffic. As the chief of the reserve army General Fromm denies to support the "Walküre" orders he gets arrested by the conspirators.
During the next hours the conspirators successfully alert several troop units within Germany and the occupied territories.

But because of the not anymore existing intelligence lockdown at the "Wolfsschanze" several units now recieve fully contradictory orders from two sources.

A great confusement wether to follow the orders coming from the Wolfsschanze or the ones coming from the Bendlerblock takes place.

Until 05:30 PM Berlin

The alarming of the out of Berlin positioned troops by the conspirators is succesful. A cadet unit commanded by Major Friederich Jakob occupies the radio station at the Masurenstreet in Berlin-Charlottenburg but fails to interrupt the pro-regime broadcasting for some yet unknown reason.

Because of that the Nazi-regime is able to fast and effectively inform the population that an assasination attempt was carried out but Hitler survived nearly unharmed. (The propably biggest blow to the conspirators)

About 07:00 PM, Berlin

The commander of the guard battalion "Großdeutschland" , Major Otto Ernst Remer arrives at Goebbels house after his alerting by the conspirators. He orders his men to surround Goebbels house and shoot at anyone who tries to leave or enter.

The housekeeper informs Goebbels that a major Remer wants to speak with him and Remer meets Goebbels in his work room.

Goebbels asks Remer why there are soldiers on the streets and just as Remer explains that Hitler is dead he is interrupted by Goebbels who tells him that Hitler is definitly not dead because he just spoke to him on the telephone.

The fully stunned Remer who was ready to arrest Goebbels just a second ago, quickly realizes the situation and tells Goebbels how greatly reliefed he is to hear this.

Goebbels phones the Wolfsschanze and gives the telephone to Remer. On the other side is Hitler who asks Remer if he recognizes his voice and if he believes that it is really him.

Hitler gives Remer the orders to immidiately start with an investigation into who are the responsible persons for this asassination attempt.

Two SS officers arrive at the Bendlerblock to question Stauffenberg about his hazy departure from the Wolfsschanze. The conspirators disarm and arrest them.

07:30 PM, Bendlerblock

Generalfieldmarshall von Witzleben , who was supposed to be the new highcommander of the Wehrmacht , arrives at the Bendlerstreet.

In a short talk with the conspirators, the angry Witzleben declares that the whole operation has failed because of their amateurism and that he will not support them anymore aswell as denying any involvement.

Stauffenberg says that he is convinced that the denial of Hitler's death through the media is only a tactic by the regime and that the operation must continue anyway wether Hitler is dead or not.

The confusement in the military becomes even bigger as the Wolfsschanze gives out a special order to all units telling them to only accept orders which are definitly coming from there and to ignore any Bendlerblock orders.

10:30 PM Bendlerblock

Not into the conspiracy involved pro-nazi officers of the Bendlerblock, who realize now what is going on, gather secretly and arm themselves to attack the conspirators.

11:50 PM , Bendlerblock

The attack of the pro-nazi officers ends with a short shootout and the freeing of Generaloberst Fromm and the both SS officers. Fromm arrests the conspirators for high treason and announces a immidiate field court martial trial.

He names all conspirators and "the officer whose name he doesnt want to speak out anymore" to death by execution.

About 12:15 PM , Bendlerblock

The fourth company of the guard battalion "Großdeutschland" occupies the Bendlerblock without any resistance.

Between 12:15 and 12:45 PM , Bendlerblock

Fromm grants Generaloberst Beck to commit suicide after Beck beggs his old friend to "let him die like a soldier".

Fromm gives his pistol to Beck who puts the pistol to his own head and shoots but the projectile deflects from his skull due to his shaking hands. The injured and stunned Beck asks "Did this thing just worked ?"

Fromm cinicly urges Beck to try it again as "they dont have all night for this".

Beck shoots one more time and his head crushes onto the desk he was sitting next to. The heavy injured Beck is not dead and is twitching and rattling. One of the conspirators shouts "In gods name !, please would somebody give this poor man the mercy shot !"

Fromm orders one of the Feldwebels to carry Beck to the next room and give him the last shot.

Friday , July 21 1944 , between 00:15 AM and 00.30 AM , in the yard of the Bendlerblock

A special execution commando of ten men under command of Leutnant Werner Schady executes :

- General of the infantry Friedrich Olbricht

- Oberst Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim

- Oberleutnant Werner von Haeften (who runs into the firing line as the commando was trying shoot Stauffenberg)

- Oberst Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg

Stauffenberg shouts "Long live our holy Germany !" just before the commando fires.

(There is some uncertainity about his last words as they were spoken out in the same moment the shots were fired)

It might be that he actually shouted "Lang lebe unser "geheimes" (secret) instead of "heiliges" (holy) Deutschland.

The witnesses could find no agreement on this but the most of them say they heard "holy".

Shortly before 01:00 AM , Wolfsschanze

Hitler, Göing and Dönitz speak in a radio broadcast. The coup d´etat has finally completely failed.

On July 20 1944 heavy activities of conspirators in France took place.

In Paris 1.200 SS and policemen were arrested by the wehrmacht in only 24 hours.

The next day they were all set free again.

Other parts of the plan, like the occupation of all concentration camps and the arrest of the SS guards by wehrmacht units never commenced as the coup d'etat already failed much earlier.

Stauffenberg was one of Hitlers biggest supporters and "fans" in the 30th´s.

He once said to his wife "He is a wonderful and charismatic man" "I hope to meet him personally one day"

The day as he planted the bomb was their first personal meeting.

Yes it took me some time, maybe 2 hours or so.

Maybe its only my personal problem but translating german into english seems to be harder than the opposite way.

Especially to keep the exact way of how something is written ,the words that are used, is difficult and it is often impossible to translate it without loosing a bit of the original sense and meaning here and there.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Another thing is that our sentences are muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccchhhhhhhhhhh longer for some reason. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

It comes a little bit late http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif but i just came across this video of a solemn pledge in the Bendlerblock.

Every conscript soldier in Germany has to make that solemn pledge (not sure if this is the correct translation ?) after completing the 12 weeks of basic training.

It was made there to honor Stauffenberg and the other conspirators. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Have you heard about the upcoming film 'Valkyrie' about the 20 July assassination attempt?

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Tom Cruise is set to play Stauffenberg in the movie Valkyrie, which is based on the plot and events leading up to the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler. The film is slated for a 2008 release, will be directed by Bryan Singer and will co-star Kenneth Branagh. Referring to Cruise in an interview for Süddeutsche Zeitung, Stauffenberg's eldest son Berthold, a retired German Bundeswehr general stated, "He should leave my father alone. He should go climb a mountain or go surfing in the Caribbean. I don't give a hoot as long as he keeps out of it." Filming started almost on the exact anniversary of the failed assassination, on 19 July 2007 in Brandenburg. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Tom Cruise as von Stauffenberg?! Somehow, I don't think it will be a good film http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

There is a big fuzz going on here about that movie. But no positive fuzz.

Cruise was denied to use the Bendlerblock for filming the movie as he is a member of Scientology which is not very beloved here.

Actually there is a yet unofficial debate going on wether if the law makes it possible to ban Scientology in Germany somehow.

Family members of Stauffenberg also refused to help him with the movie as they dont want to be associated with Scientology by aiding Tom Cruise.

I heard that they will be filming here in Berlin this weekend and still have some bit part roles open for people who want to apply.

Tom Cruise in a historical movie http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
Kenneth Branagh has proven before on the other hand to be quite good in historical movies! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Anyway, it's not a movie, I would spend money on = cinema or DVD. I can easily wait for it to show in TV...

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I see what you mean!

I don't like this film and it's not even been made yet. Why are they doing it, when we already have the German language 'Stauffenberg' film?

By the way do you know if 'Stauffenberg' is available with English subtitles?

Sadly no. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

I have it here and also checked amazon. No subtitles

Well....lets see...there are also some examples of good movies with Tom Cruise like "Vanilla Sky".

Tom Cruise might be hard to stomach in this, but it could be worse.

Ben Afleck, Marky Mark, Jack Black, Justin Timberlake?

Of all-time actors looking close to Stauffenberg, my pick might be Errol Flynn, although his behavior might not meet the approval of the Stauffenberg family either. He liked his women and he liked them young. The rogue from Tasmania. He did have the pedigree though, his mother had a lineage back to the HMS Bounty.

For pure stature and the way he carried himself, I would probably select Gary Cooper. Cooper has a close enough pedigree. He was in the movie The Hanging Tree with Maria Schell, an Austrian actress. She was the sister of Maximilian Schell and was quite a beauty.
