I'm not sure what a game engine is, I guess its what the game runs off on, (other then ur computer)

But will we have better land stuff, like more objects on ground (people, cows, farms, everyday things u would see) but less harsh on ur video card, The land detail in this game kills the fps. Because It's got so much detail, that u never bother looking at, how about we try to stop putting in the harsh killing ground detail and try to just cluster more colors if u know what i mean.

Well look at the original il2 land detail...

Now look at the BOB:WOV

The second one, doesnt have as much detail, but when ur in the air, it probably looks almost exactly the same, and it still looks good to.

I think more objects from everyday life and such, and diffrent game engine, and diffrent land detail stuff, will help out performance and happyness.

Most of the detail you see at low alt is scaled so that you don't see it higher up.

A lot of things are optimized for various distances, so that extra detail doesn't adversely affect performance. For example, airplane textures and meshes become simpler the farther they are. Same works with the ground.

WoV uses a game engine that's very old; probably why it looks like that.

I disagree. The BoB II: WoV engine doesn't look nearly as good at displaying the ground as the IL-2 engine does. The IL-2 engine was designed to be looking good upclose as thats where the IL-2 spent most of its time.

The difference is really in the detail textures. Oleg's team uses a very simple but sophisticated effect to make the ground look good nomatter where you are.

Understand that the game uses LODs or levels of detail. These LODs scale depending on what you can see. The ground doesn't have the impact you think it does...its not all being drawn at the same time.

The biggest eaters of FPS are in my opinion: the pixel shaders on the water in perfect mode, physics calculations done by the CPU, AI calculations done by the CPU, sound, and drawing large cities full of objects at ground level.

I agree with Ice, the Il2 ground looks better than the BoB one.

Yep, no competition. IL-2's land is the best modelled in any sim imo barring LOMAC. Even then, it's not too far behind, not by a long shot.

Ground detail in IL-2 is much nicer than the blurry textures you get in other sims. BoB will have more detail because average hardware specs at release will be far superior to when IL-2 was released.

il2 is the best ive seen, but i dont have lomac, or fancy terrain add ons for fs2004

BOB WoV land detail blows. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
Be sure.

I'm lukewarm towards SW-BoB, my perception that it is arcadish is tempered by my recognition of my ignorance about the game. But the Il-2 ground still looks wonderful to me!

In real life, (at least in England), all the ground looks like fields or towns or forests from the air, basically, while in Il-2 there aren't any fields (in my hazy recollections. I haven't played Il-2 for several months, due to lack of joystick http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ). But it still looks really good! The roads would be much better if they didn't look like the London Underground map (http://www.melted.com/bce/images/underground%20map%20net.jpg), and the forests look excellent.

I hope that 1C:Maddox will take advantage of the radar terrain data (used by Horizon Simulations and Just Flight for FS2002/4) to make all the coastlines and hills and rivers in the UK very, very accurate. An insurance company commissioned a high-resolution radar height-mapping survey of the entire UK for assessing flood-damage liability, and it found its way into FS2004. I hope it could be included in 1C-BoB!

The ground textures of BOB WOV are bloody awfull, but may allow more objects to be place with a lesser hit on FPS. I much prefer Olegs system where everything looks realistic and you can add objects as the power of your system is upgraded.

The emptiness of spaces in IL2 is actually quite realistic if you remind what Russia looked like in 1941. Look at pictures of the Wehrmacht in russia and you will be surprised how close it looks to to the IL2 landscapes.

But I agree that this works less well for other maps, like the Normandy one, or even the Berlin one. I also think the "IL2 style" doesnt work too well for the Pacific Theatre, but that may be my personal taste...

I'm not bothered by the relative emptyness of the maps but more by the "octagonal" style of road and city layout etc. I think the next BoB maps should abandon this style and get to something more organic and realistic looking.

The biggest problem with FB/PF maps is the chopped off horizon -- only 20km distance for most of the life of FB. The map engine was created originally for very low altitude IL-2 ground attack simulation alone -- the original goal of IL-2 flight sim. A small 20km horizon distance can work well when you fly below 1km all the time.

Now computers have advanced so that most people can run in Perfect Mode, we can use this mode's more advanced 30km horizon distance. Still, 30km is horribly short.

The best map engine is a simple one like StrikeFighters. This map engine is so high performance that I can get a whopping 200km horizon distance -- thats 100 times (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif) more map area than a 20km horizon distance. Map tiling can have the most pretty landscape and better, it allows 3rd Parties to create new maps and map tiles. Map tiling can be very well done with a little common sense(!), but usually its poorly done--either by developers or 3rd Partys--giving map tiling a bad reputation.

As far as 3D Features growing from the landscape, like Forest sheets, lets not talk about this, because then we must talk about the invisible Pancake layers at the FB/PF Forest edges. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

much of russia was/is? grass land or similer uncultivated, alot of the land around me is grass, but theres lots of hedges to make fields http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

britain has actully changed alot in a few 1000 years, back along time ago they think britain had a population of 3000 (same as my village http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif) and it was nearly all forest, now its all fields with a few little bits of forest
