Personally, I preferred something a little more advanced above me at sea.....

Goalkeeper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZBFSGzRyV4) for example.

Yes, but that 20 mm is a close range anti-ship weapon while the Goalkeeper is solely a missile defense system.

Those systems like the Goalkeeper and the u.s Phalanx have one major flaw : They can only engage one incoming missile at a time and their success rate is too small with modern anti-ship missiles which are simply too fast. (Made so fast exactly for that reason)

Modern missiles also fly evasive manouvers before heading towards their targets , this is done to confuse such gatling gun systems.

Anti missile - missile launchers are the future http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

RAM @ wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIM-116_Rolling_Airframe_Missile)

One of Celeons videos shows the test of RAM launcher (Just with a slow drone though)

With a refreshing ice cold beer for everyone in the end http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Yes missles do indeed incresse the kill rate but missles do have draw backs. If they miss they cant turn around and try agian, and if enough missles are fired it will overwehlm the missle defnece system. Hence the need for CIWS systems. And even then the CIWS guns can be over welmed. A smart enemy would(or at least should) "volly" ther missles to over wehlm the missle defence systems.

Does the Phalanx still have ship power supply problems, which rendered it absolutely useless.
Did they fix it after that USS Starke disaster - if I remember the name correctly.

The Stark was accidently hit by two Iraqi Exocet missiles. The Iraqi fighter thought he was targeting a Iranian oil tanker.

Its defense CIWS Phalanx system remained in standby mode and the missiles werent even detected by its radar. Only the look out reported the incoming missiles a few seconds before impact.

One missile penetrated the hull and exploded in the crew quarters. The other one was luckily a dud , but spilled burning missile fuel over Stark's deck, causing a massive fire.

37 sailors were killed and another 21 injured.

Luckily the first series Exocet missile was renowned for its faulty detonator. If the second missile would had detonated, the Stark would had sunk.

OK about the Goalkeeper and Phalanx, but in truth in the ships I had with either of them, there were also 20mm and 30mm CIWS guns. Additionally, the UK SeaWolf missile system has a good record of downing incoming missiles. The RN were happily fitting Goalkeeper to new-build ships when they suddenly started retro-fitting Phalanx to their Type 42s. It was easier to fit one on each side of the ship, while most USN ships had just one fitted, on the hangar.

As for Stark, I don't find it surprising that the Phalanx radar did no detect incoming missiles. As a fire-control radar it may not even have been switched on, as this can be construed as an aggressive act. I can't remember the details of the USS Stark incident, but they were clearly not at Battle Stations (or Action Stations in the RN), or, if they were, they were negligent.

Just like with the 8.8 Flak 60 years ago, they now rediscovered that you can fire on enemy infantry and vehicles with that baby http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

As being former infantry cannonfodder .....this idea gives me nightmares http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

You had a gun system once....almost... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

M247 Sergeant York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M247_Sergeant_York)

At the moment you seem to stick to missile systems (Which is anyway the way to go if you ask me) like the M6 Linebaker or the M1097 Avenger for short ranges

We use the Ozelot for that
