Well I finally finish it.. and it took me a while. Good campaign, but I do not understand why is the 1942 subcampaign (starting year) the longest one regarding the number of missions. All other subcampaigns are way short when compared to 1942 subcampaign. The weird was the Iwo Jima subcampaign.. Americans eventually took half of our airfield yet we are still taking off from the runway. Under fire of course. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I have flown the campaign on default settings (def.planes and no DGen or conf.ini changes), and on realistic settings.

Campaign is exactly 95 missions long (from the first available starting year - 1942). I haven't been wounded, so now you guys who are playing this campaign know exactly how long is gonna take before finish.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Of course there is possibility of early finish due to required number of points required to overall win of the war (README), but you won't meet these requirements, believe me. Not on the 'realistic' settings.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Also there is one interesting mission on the very end. My plane in Home Islands subcampaign (last subc.) was Hayate Ib (default) and I have been surprised when the very last mission (95th) that I have flown was on A6M5a..http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif versus B29 bomber (that one must be on ace level http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif). And also that one was 'solo' mission.. I was the only one to take off.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Very nice campaign overall..

Yes, I did that mission. I actually thought it was an attempt to stop the A-Bomb from being dropped!

Did you happen to recall the date of that mission?

14 Aug 1945

Briefing for last mission (took this from .properties file under campaign folder)

Some time later...\n\n\nThe news arrived this morning.\n\n"Japan has decided to accept the enemy's terms. We will abide by the Potsdam Declaration."\n\nA message to the nation, recorded by The Emperor himself, will be broadcast through NHK tomorrow at noon.\n\nSurrender..?\n\nAugust 14,1945 18:00 hours\n\nTai-i Marten, you have made a bold decision and will defy the order to remain grounded.\n\nNo announcement has been broadcast publicly yet, so in effect the war is still on.\n\nOne last flight then...\nMaybe you can make one final interception in your Zero and claim a kill in the name of the Emperor.\n\nIf, on the other hand, you find yourself outnumbered and die (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif) in battle, then at least your passing will be honourable like that of the Samurai.\n\nBanzai!\n

Oh that's clever. A bit of a nod and a wink to the end of Saburu Sakai's autobiography. I've never been overly impressed with Starshoy, but credit where credits due for a classy campaign close.

/me runs off to start IJN campaign http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Dang ! I might have to play more PF DGEN campaigns. I'm in the middle of an Eastern Front one now, but that last mission is a good selling point. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes.. it surprised me big time.. have seen the 'closure' text of my last subcampaign (Home Islands) and I thought that's it.. I have reached the end. I hit 'Apply' just to see one more mission.. nice touch. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm now back to my old Finnish fighter campaign (87 miss.completed -- still on 1942 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

I played the IJN Campaign and this same mission is the last one (lone A6M5a vs lone B29).
I don't remember any difficulties downing the Superfortress though. (Campaign difficulty default=Medium).
I found the switch from A6M5c to an A6M5a model, logical, considering the situation of the last days fighting over Japan, but don't find it very immersive for an IJA Campaign.
This would have never happened in reality. But it's just a game after all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Uh.. I have trouble with that Superfortress.. first time when I played that last mission I have badly shot up the bomber, and have rammed it unintentionally (bomber was already on his way down.. uh I was angry big time..http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif). I haven't been able to complete mission (bring down bomber and return home) in few more attempts. Untill I finally get a 'feel' for A6M. Cockpit of A6M is very different from those in Ki84s; if you switch to gunsight view, your forward view is somewhat obstructed more than in Hayate (this is subjective opinion, I admit that). It takes some time to adjust. I guess same thing would happen if I have switched from A6M to Hayate.

But also Frank is excellent BnZer way better than A6M -- therefore intercept missions are easier with it.(mostly due to fact that it is faster plane..)

Well heck, now you got me wanting to start campaigning again. I've never gone through more than 5 or 6 missions until I got bored and started another, so haven't seen any actual progression to the war. It's good, is it?

Well, it will bore you no doubt about it. After some time for sure. *But* it is a good feeling when you see that you have finished your long campaign.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I played my campaigns all on the similar way. In my missions priorites are, survive, protect squad mates, and third, meet the mission objectives. Once when I started to do it this way I have found that I pass most of the missions (even toughtest ones) at the first attempt. I presume what makes people to quit campaigns mostly (besides they are bored) is the fact they die in the same mission more then twice.(it can be very frustrating IMO)

Once when I was given higher rank, so I can lead my wing, I have often issued "Return to base" command.(for instance, 6 Hayates versus 15 B29s and 10 escorting P51s (like B29s wasn't enough http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif)).

Also I have scored 22 kills during this campaign (of that only 2 B29s http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif), and 5 ground kills (ships in Iwo Jima subc.).

________________________________________________
I have noticed that two last missions aren't recorded in my log ("Squadron documents"). And the last one (lone Zero vs. lone B29) ain't recorded nor in "Pilot details" nor "Squadron documents", so you may as well shot that lone B29, but you won't take credit for it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif..
