Sry to retract from D-day, but who opened-up a bigger can of wuppass: The A6M, or the Corsair?

Whispering = coz it's engine pistons ran inside sleeve chambers (similar to the older air cooled Volkswagen engine) giving a very distinct swishing(whispering) sound when approaching. Not to mention all the guns and rockets it carried

A6M, easily

undisputed king of the PTO for a long time

unmatched range, superior firepower, reliability, and was THE fighter for IJN, kickin *** in many places

the F4U, while obvisously mighty as a titan next to the zero, just didnt see the range of scope of action the zero did (excluding its stellar post war career(s))....its impact was lessened in that it had an equal in the Hellcat, less time in combat...

both were great in thier respective roles and positions in time; it cannot be said the corsair did not instill respect and fear from its enemies (as late as 1969!), but its impact on the scene is somewhat less than that of the zero, lets face it

the corsair was just another bludgeon among many, beatin the snot outta JP, the zero was an unexpected, real, and repeated kick to the nads to USN

and what aircraft was called "silent but deadly" ?

Why the SBD Dautless of course. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Called this because dautless pilots liked to sneak into a attack with their engines turned off which also made the tail gunner cr-ap their pants silently everytime it was done.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

common conversation between pilot and gunner in a SBD..

"Holly God..! Hay is that you joe back their air-ing your BVD's out!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif"

"Yup it was me.."

Pilot.." Holy crips sakes. For a minute I thought we made a direct hit a Japanese sh=t house! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif"

Which would I take? Hmmmm it is easy question. Comparing the best of both F4U-D vs A6M-21. F4U 100kph faster, in some altitudes better in otherrs the same instant climb. Constant ROC is better in any speed. A6M must fire a lot of bullets but it is not easy because non-accurate cannons. Machineguns wont do anything to F4U. F4U needs only half a second burst to set A6M fire. The only way the A6M could win is head-to-head lucky shot. In 1vs1 there is certain probability the A6M would win in 4vs4 there is big disadvatage for A6M.

IMO, the author is NOT asking for "which is better"...although its true, we simply dont have enough of those type thread at UBI http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

its CLEAR the corsair is better, FFS

which one "opened a bigger can of whoop-azz" is, again, IMO (and aplogies to author if incorrect), the author asking which one made more of an impact during WWII

The Corsair was a strange looking beast, basically a big fighter with a bomber engine mounted up front with a bomber's prop too. Crooked wings and a verical stab oddly put up far in front of the horizontal stab. And a cockpit placed curiously rearward. A lot of folks think the Corsair was nice looking, I say no.........But beauty is in the eye of the beholder as always. Fuselage looks like a big metal pipe that's crimped in the back.

But, I vote for the ugly beast over the Zeke any day.

I'm gonna have to vote for the Corsair. It may not be as good of a dogfighter as the A6M, but it's fast enough that you can run away from a bad situation. And it doesn't light up like a torch after getting hit with a few 50cals.

Besides which, the Corsair is an effective multi-role fighter. Ever tried mudmoving in an A6M?

Ahem.. cough.. cough.. Now hear this, Now hear this!!

There is documentary proof that the Zero was out-flown and out-gunned before 7th Dec 1941 - in the war in China. This evidence being provided by Chennault's Flying Tigers (P40's) - they had worked this out AND sent this info to the USA prior to Pearl Harbour. But somehow this info was never relayed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
