i just checked quickly through EAW sites like this one: http://www.cds1.net/~linkman993/addonsfinder.html
i was amazed how good this game looks today (i stopped playing it in 2000). i wonder if anyone of you still plays an enhanced version of EAW and how it compares with FB?
as i remeber i really liked the FM in EAW and most of all the huge formations. this is something which il2 lacks dearly, especially since EAW did not slow down even with 100 b17s.

Can't comment on EAW, but I can tell you that IL-2 wasn't designed for the large, strategic, 100s of planes style of warfare on the west front. IL-2 was designed for a much smaller scale tactical front rather than a wide strategic one.

I did try going back once, and it`s still good. But I just couldn`t get past the ropey graphics of the aircraft (which I once thought were incredible). Just seeing 2D pilots vanish when looking straight on is too much. And it just can`t match the DM of FB which I love...

I`d grab it again though if I had a real low spec PC.

I used to love it, although I only played offline.
The main thing that used to tick me off was the lead plane of a formation going down to crash and the others in the formation following him down and losing all their alt.
Oh, that and the fact that the AI would crash rather than land more often as not.
The thing that made me laugh was taking out one of your own flight. The others would shout 'Murderer' and pour lead into you! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
So next time anyone comes across a teamkilller online......
Cheers!

Actually I liked that bit of EAW. Shoot down 3 friendlies and they`d turn on you! Nice. Wish FB would do that. You don`t even get demoted for killing friendlies- silly omission. I NEVER heard them say `murderer` though.

Wouldn't even contemplate taking EAW off my hard drive.

With all the most recent skins and terrains installed dont look to bad. But most importantly I find it very, very good immersive fun for a quick blast, and yes great for the BIG bomber formations.

Hi Guys!

EAW is a long standing favourite of mine. With the right selection of terrain updates and skins, it still shapes up pretty good graphically. Remember, this sim is about 6 years old now, and that's a damned long time in our terms.

I'm shortly going to take delivery of my long-awaited new rig (3.4 GHz 800FSB with FX5950 Ultra and 2 Gig of DDR400), so hopefully I'll now be able to enjoy IL-2/FB in their total visual splendour!

But I'm also keeping my 'old banger' (P3 866 with GeForce2 GTS and 512MB SDRAM) and EAW will be staying on it. I reckon I'll still enjoy the occasional playing, because even now, despite graphics advances and technical excellence, few sims have equalled its sheer immersive pleasure, in my opinion.

Bye for now,
Best regards to all,

One nice feature of EAW was the straight wing autopilot. If you ran out of ammo, normal autopilot would keep you heading defenseless towards the target. So you would just point towards england and hit shift+A.

I wish FB had some kind of autopilot like that. Does it, and I just missed it? I use autopilot a lot for transiting. It is annoying on a campaign to run out of ammo and then fly 80km deeper into enemy territory to hit some stupid waypoint.
